  • The digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system adopts Coded OFDM(COFDM) for channel coding. The COFDM is a combined technique of multicarrier transmission(OFDM) and punctured convolutional coding with viterbi error correction. Because the channel coding is an important topic for OFDM systems, this paper proposes a new turbo coded OFDM system that replaces the existing RCPC codec by a turbo codec without modifying the puncturing procedure and puncturing vectors defined in the standard DAB system for compatibility. The performance of a new system is compared to that of the conventional system under the frequency selective Rician fading channel and the frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel in conjunction with DAB transmission mode I suitable for the terrestrial single frequency network(SFN) broadcasting. The standard system's performance was improved with the aid of turbo codec.

  • In the recent digital communication systems, the performance of Turbo Code using the mr correction coding depends on the interleaver influencing the free distance determination and the recursive decoding algorithms that is executed in the huh decoder. However, performance depends on the interleaver depth that needs many delays over the reception process. Moreover, turbo code has been blown as the robust coding methods with the confidence over the fading channel. International Telecommunication Union(ITU) has recently adopted it as the standardization of the channel coding over the third generation mobile communications(IMT2000). Therefore, in this paper, we preposed the interleaver that has the better performance than existing block interleaver, and modified turbo decoder that has the parallel concatenated structure using MAP algorithm. In the realtime voice and video service over third generation mobile communications, the performance of the proposed two methods was analyzed and compared with the existing methods by computer simulation in terms of reduced decoding delay using the variable decoding method over AWGN and fading channels for CDMA environments.

  • It is known that turbo codes have an error-floor bound according to the effective free distance at high SNR. But the performance for turbo codes in the water-fall area at low SHR has not been studied yet. In this paper, asymmetric turbo codes that consist of RSC(recursive systematic convolutional) codes with different constraint length are proposed and their performance is analysed for SOVA decoding algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a high speed block turbo code decoding algorithm and an efficient hardware architecture. The multimedia wireless data communication systems need channel codes which have the high-performance error correcting capabilities. Block turbo codes support variable code rates and packet sizes, and show a high performance due to a soft decision iteration decoding of turbo codes. However, block turbo codes have a long decoding time because of the iteration decoding and a complicated extrinsic information operation. The proposed algorithm using the threshold that represents a channel information reduces the long decoding time. After the threshold is decided by a simulation result, the proposed algorithm eliminates the calculation for the bits which have a good channel information and assigns a high reliability value to the bits. The threshold is decided by the absolute mean and the standard deviation of a LLR(Log Likelihood Ratio) in consideration that the LLR distribution is a gaussian one. Also, the proposed algorithm assigns '1', the highest reliable value, to those bits. The hardware design result using verilog HDL reduces a decoding time about 30% in comparison with conventional algorithm, and includes about 20K logic gate and 32Kbit memory sizes.

  • The MAP algorithm is designed and implemented through the sliding window method for turbo decoding. First, the implementation issues, which are the length of the sliding window and the normalization method of state metrics are reviewed, and their optimal values are obtained by the simulation. All component schemes of the decoder including the branch metric evaluator are also presented. The proposed MAP architecture can be easily redesigned according to the size of sliding window, that is, sub-frame length because of its simplicity on buffer control.

  • A novel turbo coded modulation scheme, called turbo-APPM, for deep space optical communications is constructed. The constructed turbo-APPM is a serial concatenations of turbo codes, an accumulator and a pulse position modulation (PPM), where turbo codes act as an outer code while the accumulator and the PPM act together as an inner code. The generator polynomial and the puncturing rule for generating turbo codes are chosen to show the low bit error rate. At the receiver, the joint decoding is performed by exchanging soft information iteratively between the inner decoder and the outer decoder. In the outer decoder, a local iterative decoding for turbo codes is conducted before transferring soft information to the inner decoder. Poisson distribution is used to model the deep space optical channel. It is shown by simulations that the constructed turbo-APPM provides coding gains over all previously proposed schemes such as LDPC-APPM, RS-PPM and SCPPM.

  • In this paper we study the effect of bit-to-symbol mappings on the convergence behavior of turbo equalizers employing low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over high order modulations. We analyze the effective SNR of the outputs from linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalizers and the convergence property of LDPC decoding for different symbol mappings. Numerical results show that the bit-reliability (BR) mapping provides better performance than random mapping in LDPC-coded turbo equalizers over high order modulations. We also verify the effect of symbol mappings through the noise threshold and error performance.

  • Turbo code has excellent decoding performance but had limitations for real time communications because of the system complexity and time delay in decoding procedure. To overcome this problem, a new SRI(Semi-Random Interleaver) algorithm which realize the reduction of the interleaver size is proposed for reducing the time delay during the decoding prodedure. SRI compose the interleaver 0.5 size from the input data sequence. In writing the interleaver, data is recorded by row such as block interleaver. But, in reading, data is read by randomly and the text data is located by the just address simultaneously. Therefore, the processing time of with the preexisting method such as block, helical random interleaver.

  • The turbo code, an error correction code, needs a long decoding time since the same decoding process must be repeated several times in order to obtain a good BER performance. Thus, parallel processing may be used to reduce the decoding time, in which case there may be a memory contention that requires additional buffers. The QPP interleaving has been proposed to avoid such case, but there is still a possibility of memory contention when a decoder is constructed using the so-called double flow technique. In this paper, we propose an even-odd cross mapping technique to avoid memory conflicts even in decoding using the double-flow technique. This method uses the address generation characteristic of the QPP interleaving and can be used to implement the interleaving circuit between the decoding blocks and the LLR memory blocks. When the decoder implemented by applying the double flow and the proposed methods is compared with the decoder by the conventional MDF techniques, the decoding time is reduced by up to 32% with the total area increase by 8%.

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication systems is sensitive to inter-symbol interference caused by delay spread developed from multipath signal propagation. The multipath nature of underwater channels causes signal distortion and error floor. In order to improve the performance, it is necessary to employ an iterative coding scheme. Of the various iterative coding schemes, turbo code and convolutional code based on the BCJR algorithm have recently dominated this application. In this study, the performance of iterative codes based on turbo equalizers with equivalent coding rates and similar code word lengths were analyzed. Underwater acoustic communication system experiments using these two coding techniques were conducted on Kyeong-chun Lake in Munkyeong City. The distance between the transmitter and receiver was 400 m, and the data transfer rate was 1 Kbps. The experimental results revealed that the performance of turbo codes is better for channeling than that of convolutional codes that use a BCJR decoding algorithm.
