  • The experiment was performed to analyze the intersectional ventilation efficiency by intersection structure and Jet Fan in network-form road tunnel. For this, the size of real road tunnel was reduced by 1/45. To apply traffic inertia force when driving, blower fan was used to form an airflow in model tunnel and the intersectional efficiency was also investigated by measuring the speed at local point of the tunnel. To improve the reduction of ventilation caused by the structure character, Jet Fan was installed to optimize ventilation efficiency in tunnel.

  • One of the key design factors for the ventilation and safety system at extra long tunnel is the airflow velocity induced by the natural ventilation force. Despite of the importance, it has not been widely studied due to the complicated influencing variables and the relationship among them is difficult to quantify. At this moment none of the countries in the world defines its specific value on verified ground. It is also the case in Korea. The recent worldwide disasters by tunnel fires and demands for better air quality inside tunnel by users require the optimization of the tunnel ventilation system. This indicates why the natural ventilation force is necessary to be thoroughly studied. This paper aims at predicting the natural ventilation force at a 11 km-long tunnel which is in the stage of detailed design and will be the longest vehicle tunnel in Korea. The concept of barometric barrier which can provide the maximum possible natural ventilation force generated by the topographic effect on the external wind is applied to estimate the effect of wind pressure and the chimney effect caused by the in and outside temperature difference is also analyzed.

  • The several assumptions and design parameters to determine the ventilation rate in tunnel ventilation system were examined. In longitudinal ventilating tunnel, the ventilation rate has been determined by the critical velocity above which the smoke propagation to the upstream of ventilating air is prevented. Based upon the examination of assumptions and experimental results, we suggested the improved method to determine the critical velocity. In transverse ventilating tunnel, we found that the ventilation rate has been determined in accordance with the custom rather than fire-smoke dynamics such as the critical velocity in the longitudinal ventilating tunnel. It is because the ventilation rate in the transverse ventilation system has been determined by considering only the ventilation of contaminant by vehicle. To improve the ventilation design parameters based upon the fire-smoke dynamics, we conducted model tunnel fire experiments. From the experimental results, smoke propagating distance and smoke filling were suggested as the design parameter to determine the ventilation rate in transverse ventilating tunnel. And tunnels in Europe designed by the custom is found to have the dangerous nature in view of fire safety.

  • In recent years, in urban areas, underground of roads are being promoted in order to resolve traffic congestion and to secure green spaces, and due to the low ratio of large vehicles, they are planned or constructed as road tunnels for small cars only. In addition, the tunnels being built in the city is a tendency to be enlarged to play the role of main roads. Accordingly, the capacity of the ventilation system is increasing and various ventilation methods are required, and the importance of maintenance after the completion of the tunnel such as the operating cost of the ventilation system is emphasized. Therefore, the need for optimization of the operation stage for reducing the power consumption of the ventilation system and the study of the ventilation system operation control logic is increasing. In this study, the study on the necessity of the optimization of operation stage and control logic of the ventilation system was carried out to realize the energy-saving operation for the small car only passing through tunnels which is applied of ① jet fan and combination ventilation system (② jet fan + air purifying equipment, ③ jet fan + vertical shaft, ④ jet fan + supply air semi-transverse). As a result of this study, there can be various operating combinations in the case of the combined ventilation system, and even though the amount of ventilation air is the same, the operating power varies greatly according to the operating combinations. It was found that operating the axial fan first rather than the jet fan first operation method has an effect on power saving.

  • Recently, there are many cases in the roadway design for successive tunnel with small distance between two tunnels. In this case, the degree of interference for successive tunnels is a significant consideration in the design of ventilation systems. Also, Re-inflows of contaminated air in successive tunnel make serious ventilation problems in case of fire accident in the tunnel. In this study, for successive tunnels in Donghae highway project, the concentration of contaminant such as CO, NOx and Smoke were calculated by numerical analysis using 1D and 3D-CFD analysis. And, the rate of re-inflow at the portals of successive tunnel according to the direction of wind were analysed.

  • The ventilation rate (Qreq) requirement in road tunnels is not just a basic information for determining the tunnel cross-sectional area, but also a major factor for the ventilation system selection. The Qreq is predominantly dependent on the vehicle traffic volume, while among others, the vehicle exhaust emissions and permissible standards are critical. This paper analyzes the changes in the Qreq designing criteria and/or recommendations suggested by World Road Association and local authorities over the last 20 years, since the first local designing criteria was established in 1997 by Korea Expressway Corporation. Additionally, based on the updated vehicle emission standards of Ministry of Environment and recent recommendations of the World Road Association (WRA), changes in the Qreq and its effects are studied in terms of the length and grade of the tunnel.

  • Recently, various forms of diverging sections in tunnels have been designed as the demand for underground passageway in urban areas increases. Therefore, the complexity of the ventilation system in tunnels with diverging sections requires a ventilation analysis method different from the conventional method for the straight tunnels. None of the domestic and foreign tunnel ventilation design standards specifies the method for the ventilation network analysis, and the numerical analysis methods have been most widely used. This paper aims at reviewing the ventilation network analytical method applicable as the design standard. The proposed method is based on the characteristic equations rather than the numerical analysis. Thanks to the advantages of easy application, the Hardy-Cross method has been widely applied in the fields of mine ventilation and tunnel ventilation. However, limitations with the cutting errors in the Taylor series expansion and the convergence problem mainly caused by the mesh selection algorithm have been reported. Therefore, this paper examines the applicability of the ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels with the gradient method that can analyze flow rate and pressure simultaneously without the configuration of mesh. A simple ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels is proposed.
