  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the shrinkage of wood by LV-SEM (Low-Vacuum Scanning Electron Microscope) which can observe wetted wood sample. The shrinkage of small sample specimen by the dehumidification in the specimen chamber was investigated and compared with that of normal wood specimen. The observation of cross sectional surface of wood from wetted condition to dried condition can be achieved in about twenty minutes by means of the dehumidification in the specimen chamber of LV-SEM. The volumetric shrinkage of earlywood was almost the same as that of latewood. The shrinkage of SEM observation specimen was similar to that of normal wood specimen. From the correlation of the shrinkages between SEM observation specimen and normal wood specimen, it is surmised that the shrinkage of wood is more strictly dominated by shrinkage of latewood than that of earlywood.

  • Knowledge of the moisture sorption properties of a material is essential for optimal material development and analysis of the delamination failure caused by vapor pressure at the interlayer during the manufacturing process of integrated packaging devices. In this paper, both temperature dependent absorption and desorption properties according to temperature and humidity model are parameterized and the effects of water activities and temperature are discussed. The activation energy obtained from the parameterized diffusivity determines the acceleration factor for the equivalency of moisture sorption levels, which enables the effect of moisture diffusivity on the equivalent elapsed testing time required for evaluating the reliable life time to be estimated. The acceleration factor evaluated at the reliability testing standard of the flexible packaging module is exampled.

  • Recently, the semiconductor package structures are becoming thinner and more complex. As the thickness decrease, interfacial delamination due to material mismatch can be further maximized, so the reliability of interface is a critical issue in industry field. Especially, the polymers, which are widely used in semiconductor packaging, are significantly affected by the temperature and moisture. Therefore, in this study, the delamination prediction at the interface of package structure was performed through finite element analysis considering the moisture absorption and desorption under the various temperature conditions. The material properties such as diffusivity and saturated moisture content were obtained from moisture absorption test. The hygro-swelling coefficients of each material were analyzed through TMA and TGA after the moisture absorption. The micro-shear test was conducted to evaluate the adhesion strength of each interface at various temperatures considering the moisture effect. The finite element analysis of interfacial delamination was performed that considers both deformation due to temperature and moisture absorption. Consequently, the interfacial delamination was successfully predicted in consideration of the in-situ moisture desorption and temperature behavior during the reflow process.

  • Cracking of rice caused by moisture migration during storage under different relative humidity conditions was investigated for the establishment of safe storage condition of rice. Rice was cracked when a large difference in equilibrium relative humidity $({\Delta}ERH)$ between the rice and the environment was present. External and internal cracks were generated as the results of moisture desorption and adsorption, respectively. The external cracks by moisture desorption generated in all directions and shaped irregularly, while the internal cracks by moisture adsorption did in radial direction and showed a typical shape. The cracking trend could be analyzed by the Weibull function, and the cracking constant increased with ${\Delta}ERH$. The frequency of cracked rice increased linearly with In $({\Delta}ERH)$. The critical crack-inducing ${\Delta}ERH$ was $11.3{\sim}16.4%$ during desorption and $10.8{\sim}17.1%$ during adsorption. A diagram for the safe storage of rice was developed with respect to the initial moisture content and the water activity of rice.

  • Desorption experiments were carried out on soybean (Taegwang) at 5, 15, 25, 35, $45^{\circ}C$ for moisture contents between 6.74 and 28.87%(db). The method employed was to measure the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) of air in contact with the grain under static conditions, using an electronic hygrometer. The effects of temperature and moisture contents were investigated, and the measured values were fitted to the modified Henderson, the modified Chung-Pfost, the modified Halsey, the modified Oswin and the modified GAB model. The ERHs of soybean under the moiture content of 16.67%(db) decreased with an decrease in moisture content and temperature, but the ERH of the moisture content of 28.87%(db) material decreased with an increase of temperature. The modified GAB model was the best in describing the EMC/ERH of soybean.

  • $Ca_{10}(PO_{4})_{6}(OH)_{2}$ humidity-sensitive devices were fabricated by a solid reaction method, and their humidity-sensitive characteristics were investigated. The impedance decreases with increasing relative humidity, and the good sensitivity is shown in which impedance changes by about $10^{2}\;{\Omega}$ over the region of $30{\sim}90\;%$. Also, It is shown that the humidity sensitivity is stable in temperature variations and long time exposures to the humidity. The sensitivity of the specimens is not affected by a heat treatment, and the hysteresis in one humidity cycle is negligible.

  • $CaSnO_3$ specimens were fabricated by solid reaction method, and their humidity sensitive characteristics have been investigated. Capacitance increases with increasing relative humidity, better humidity sensitivity are shown at lower frequencies. Humidity sensitivity are stable at variable temperatures, and hysteresis phenomenon is shown with adsorption and desorption. Drift phenomenon is exhibited by exposing the specimens in the air, and a decrease of humidity sensitive by contamination is inhibited by heat cleaning.

  • [ $CaZrO_3$ ] humidity sensors were prepared using the solid-state synthetic method and their humidity sensitive characteristics have been investigated. It was found that the impedance of the humidity sensors decreased with increasing relative humidity and the humidity sensitivity depended on the applied frequencies. The sensitivity of sensor is stable with heat treatment and a negligible hysteresis under cyclic humidity changes is shown, and the activation energy for electrical conduction is reduced with water adsorption.

  • For increasing the insulating proper-ties and the reliability of composite materials due to environmental aging, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of moisture absortion specimens and moisture desorption specimens were investigated. After moisture absorption wt% and moisture desorption wt% increased with time, a state of saturation arrived subsequent to a constant time. Moisture absorption constants with the layers of glass fiber showed 0.0117 in 1 layer, 0.0123 in 2 layers and 0.0152 in 3 layers. Electrical and mechanical characteristics dropped significantly with moisture absorbing in composite materials. Although moisture dried completly at 70.deg. C, it is impossible to obtain the electrical and mechanical characteristics before moisture absorption. Many defaults by moisture in composite materials exist at interface between epoxy matrix and filler.

  • The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms of various tobaccos were obtained over a relative humidity range from 0 to 90% at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The hysteresis effect, constant and rate of moisture sorption and desorption, monomolecular-layer moisture content, and specific surface area were analyzed from the obtained data. The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms showed a different characteristics for different tobacco varieties. At a lower humidity range below 50% RH, Burley tobacco had higher moisture sorption and desorption figures than Hicks and Basma, while, at a higher humidity range above 50% RH, Hicks had higher values than the others. The hysteresis effect of tobacco were greater in an intermediate humidity range (40-70% RN), and Basma showed a greater effect than the others. The sorption and desorption constant (K) increased with temperature, but decreased with RH, and Burley tobacco had larger K values, while Hicks had smaller K values than others. The sorption and desorption rate of Burley tobacco were greater than the other tobaccos. The monomolecular-layer moisture was 27.8 and 51.4mg/g, and the specific surface was 101 and $186m^2/g$, for Basma and Burley, respectively.
