Study on PAN-based carbon fibers containing cellulose treated with flame retardant (난연 처리한 셀룰로오스가 첨가된 PAN계 탄소섬유의 특성 연구)

  • 탄소섬유는 전구체의 종류에 따라 PAN계, 피치계 그리고 레이온계로 나뉘며 최종 탄소섬유의 특성에도 차이가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 최근에는 PAN계 탄소섬유가 세계 시장의 대부분을 차지하고 있으며, PAN계 탄소섬유의 초경량, 고강도, 고탄성, 내약품성 그리고 열안정성 등의 우수한 특성으로 최첨단 고기능성 제품의 복합재로 많이 이용되고 있다. 그러나 탄소섬유가 가지고 있는 높은 열전도성은 적용에 따라 단점으로 작용될 수도 있다. 예를 들면, 로켓 엔진의 노즐이나 원자로의 구조물 그리고 극한조건용 구조재료 등, 고강도 단열특성을 요하는 최첨단 복합재로 응용 범위를 넓히는데 한계로 작용한다. 레이온은 최초의 탄소섬유 전구체였으나 공정상 경제성이 떨어지는 이유로, 지금은 고탄성을 요구하는 특수 목적으로만 소량 생산되고 있다. 레이온의 주원료는 셀룰로오스이며 셀룰로오스는 지구상에서 가장 흔한 재료이므로 오늘날 셀룰로오스를 보강재로 이용하려는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 탄소섬유의 열전도도를 낮추기 위한 방법으로 안정화셀룰로오스를 첨가한 PAN용액을 출발물질로 탄소섬유를 제조하고 특성 연구를 진행하였다. PAN용액에 셀룰로오스의 분산성을 향상시키기 위해 셀룰로오스를 열처리하였다. 이 과정에서 얻어진 안정화 셀룰로오스의 수율을 높이기 위해 셀룰로오스를 난연 처리하였으며, 그 결과 안정화셀룰로오스의 수율을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 안정화셀룰로오스를 첨가시킨 PAN계 탄소섬유의 물리적, 기계적 그리고 열적 특성을 SEM, XRD, 만능 인장시험기, TGA 그리고 Laser Flash Method 등을 통해 주요 특성 및 변화를 관찰한 결과, 순수한 PAN계 탄소섬유의 특성과 유사한 결과를 얻었다. 향후 몇 가지 공정상의 문제점을 개선한다면 흥미로운 결과를 기대할 수 있을 것으로 본다.

Evaluation of Adhesion and Electrical Properties of CNT/PU Topcoat with Different CNT Weight Fraction for Aircraft (탄소나노튜브의 함량에 따른 항공기용 탄소나노튜브/폴리우레탄 탑코트의 접착 및 전기적 특성 평가)

  • Dispersion and electrical resistance (ER) properties of polyurethane (PU) type topcoat were evaluated using carbon nanotube (CNT) with different CNT weight fraction. CNT was dispersed in PU type topcoat using ultra sonication dispersion method. CNT/PU topcoat was coated on carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite (CFRC) surface using gravity feed spraying method. Static contact angles of CFRC and CNT/PU topcoat were performed using 4 types of solvents to calculate the work of adhesion between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC surface. Surface resistance of CNT added PU topcoat was measured to determine CNT dispersion. Adhesion property between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC was determined via cross hatch cutting test based on ASTM D3359. The optimized condition of CNT weight fraction was found.

Measurement of Mechanical Property and Thermal Expansion Coefficient of Carbon-Nanotube-Reinforced Epoxy Composites (탄소나노튜브로 강화된 에폭시 복합재료의 기계적 물성과 열팽창 계수 측정)

  • By using shear mixing and ultrasonication, we fabricated specimens of well-dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotube composites. To confirm the proper dispersion of the filler, we used scanning electron microscopy images for quantitative evaluation and a tensile test for qualitative assessment. Furthermore, the coefficients of thermal expansion of several specimens having different filler contents were calculated from the measured thermal strains and temperatures of the specimens. Based on the microscopy images of the well-dispersed fillers and the small deviations in the measurements of the tensile strength and stiffness, we confirmed the proper dispersion of nanotubes in the epoxy. As the filler contents were increased, the values of tensile strength increased from 58.33 to 68.81 MPa, and those of stiffness increased from 2.93 to 3.27 GPa. At the same time, the coefficients of thermal expansion decreased. This implies better thermal stability of the specimen.

Improvement of Thermal Conductivity of Poly(dimethyl siloxane) Composites Filled with Boron Nitride and Carbon Nanotubes (보론 나이트라이드와 탄소나노튜브로 충전된 실리콘 고무의 열전도도 향상)

  • In order to enhance the thermal conductivity of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS), boron nitride (BN) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated as the thermally conductive fillers. The amount of BN was increased from 0 to 100 phr (parts per hundred rubber) and the amount of CNTs was increased from 0 to 4 phr at a fixed amount of the boron nitride (100 phr). The thermal conductivity of the composites increased with an increasing concentration of BN, but the incorporation of CNTs had only a slight effect on the enhancement of thermal conductivity. Unexpectedly, the thermal degradation of the composites was accelerated by the addition of CNTs in 100 phr BN filled PDMS. Activation energy for thermal decomposition of the composites was calculated using the Horowitz-Metzger method. The curing behavior, electrical resistivity, and mechanical properties of PDMS filled with BN and CNTs were investigated.

  • The main objective of this research effort was to develope the performance of C/SiC composites manufactured by LSI (Liquid Silicon Infiltration) method for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system and ensure the performance analysis technique. The various carbon preform were manufactured by filament winding, tape rolling, involute layup and stack molding process. For the best performance of thermal and mechanical properties, many process conditions were tested and selected by varying preform, the content of SiC, temperature, impregnation resin and chemical vapour reaction. In conclusion, the high performance and reliability of C/SiC composite were proved for solid and liquid rocket propulsion system. And the performance analysis technique related to mathematical ablation model was originated.

  • Recently, the applications of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become broader than ever when it comes to such industries as automotive, ships, aerospace and military because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. Thermosetting plastics like epoxy are frequently used as the binding matrix in CFRPs due to their high hardness, wetting characteristics and low viscosity. However, they cannot melted and remolded. For this reason, thermosetting plastic wastes have caused serious environmental problems with the production of fiber reinforced plastics. Thus, many studies have focused on the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) and recycling carbon fiber. In this study, recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was prepared from CFRPs using a pyrolysis method, which was employed to separate resin and carbon fiber. The degree of decomposition for epoxy resin was confirmed from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The RCF was cut and ground to prepare a carbon fiber composite sheet (CFCS). CFCS was manufactured by applying recycled carbon fibers and various thermoplastic fibers. Various characterizations were performed, including morphological analyses of surface and cross-section, mechanical properties, and crystallization enthalpy of CFCS at different cooling conditions.

  • The interfacial properties in carbon fiber composites, which control the overall mechanical properties of the composites, are very important. Effective interface enhancement work is conducted on the modification of the carbon fiber surface with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Nonetheless, most surface modifications methods do have their own drawbacks such as high temperatures with a range of 600~1000℃, which should be implemented for CNT growth on carbon fibers that can cause carbon fiber damages affecting deterioration of composites properties. This study includes the use of in-situ interfacial polymerization of polyamide 610/CNT to fabricate the carbon fiber composites. The process is very fast and continuous and can disperse CNTs with random orientation in the interface resulting in enhanced interfacial properties. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to investigate the CNT dispersion and composites morphology, and the thermal stability of the composites was analyzed via thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, fiber pull-out tests were used to assess interfacial strength between fiber and matrix.

  • Various surface treatment techniques can be applied onto the surface of carbon fibers to increase interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). In a commerciaI treatment, first, surface of carbon fiber was oxidized, after that, a sizing agent was coated to improve handleability and adhesion to the matrix. Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) which is made of these fibers show excellent ILSS but show low vaIues of impact strength In this study, reactive and ductile interphase was introduced between fiber and matrix to increase both the ILSS and impact strength. By using electric conductivity of carbon fibers, flexible polymers which have ionizable group, i.e., MVEMA and EMA, were coated onto the surface (oxidized) of carbon fiber by the technique of electrodeposition. ILSS and impact strength of composites were evaluated according to the surface treatments, i.e., commercial sizing treatment, interphase introduction, and without sizing treatment. Izod impact strength and ILSS of CFRC were simultaneously improved in thc thickness range of $0.08{\sim}0.12{\mu}m$ of MVEMA interphase. Water resistance of the composites was decreased by introducing MVEMA interphase.

  • The absorption and the interference shielding of electromagnetic wave have been very important issues for commercial and military purposes. The stealth technique is one of the most typical applications of electromagnetic wave absorption technology. This study has started for the development of composite fillers containing dielectric and magnetic lossy materials. To improve the electromagnetic characteristics of conductive nano fillers, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with nickel-phosphorous (Ni-P) or nickel-iron (Ni-Fe) have been fabricated by the electroless plating process. Observations by the electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) and element analyzer (EDS/ELLS) showed the uniform Ni-P and Ni-Fe coated CNFs. The compositions of the plating layers were about Ni-6wt%P and Ni-70wt%Fe, respectively. The average thicknesses of the plating layers were about $50\;{\sim}\;100\;nm$.

  • In this work, carbon fibers were electrolessly Ni-plated in order to investigate the effect of metal plating on the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI-SE) of Ni-coated carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The surfaces of carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electric resistance of the composites was tested using a 4-point-probe electric resistivity tester. The EMI-SE of the composites was evaluated by means of the reflection and adsorption methods. From the results, it was found that the EMI-SE of the composites enhanced with increasing Ni plating time and content. In high frequency region, the EMI-SE didn't show further increasing with high Ni content (Ni-CF 10 min) compared to the Ni-CF 5 min sample. In conclusion, Ni content on the carbon fibers can be a key factor to determine the EMI-SE of the composites, but there can be an optimized metal content at a specific electromagnetic frequency region in this system.
