  • Synthesis of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers on a catalytic metal substrate, using an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame, was investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, with diameters of 20 - 60nm, were formed on the substrate coated with nickel-nitrate in the region of 5 - 6mm from the flame center along the radial direction. The gas temperature for this region was ranging from about 1400 to 900K. Nickel particles originated from the coated nickel-nitrate on the substrate were the major catalyst for the formation of the nanomaterials. HR-TEM and Raman spectrum revealed that synthesized carbon nanotubes had multi-walled structures with some defective graphite layers at walls.

  • In this work, we prepared the carbon paper from chopped carbon fibers using a gas diffusion matrix in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells by wet processing. The process of making carbon paper using wet processing is consisted of the three steps involving the dispersion of chopped carbon fibers, the preparation of the carbon fiber web, the impregnating of phenol resin. This work was focused on finding the optimal surfactant to make the carbon paper with 2D orientation of carbon fibers by investigating the dispersion state of carbon fibers in different dispersion solutions. Furthermore, the effect of phenol resin and carbon black contents on properties of electric conductivity was analyzed. As a result, it is confirmed that the carbon fiber was well dispersed when using sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant, and the carbon paper with 8 wt% of phenol and 5 wt% of carbon black contents showed the most excellent electrical property.

  • In this study, experimental studies were performed for the carbon nanomaterial(CNM) which is catching on as a material for eco-ship. The opposed-flow methane flame was used as a heat source for synthesis of CNM. Ferrocene was used as a catalyst for the synthesis of CNM. These major parameters were $H_2$ mixing rate and sampling positions that synthesize CNMs in opposed-flow diffusion flames. The propensities of CNMs were experimentally determined using SEM and TEM images. The experimental result showed that the amount of CNTs was increased with increasing $H_2$ concentration. It can also be found that the optimal temperature in opposed-flow methane flame for synthesis of CNT was about 1500 K.

  • In this study, experimental and numerical studies for the synthesis of carbon nanotube(CNT) in methane counterflow diffusion flame have been performed. Methane mixed with acetylene($C_2H_2$) was used as a fuel gas and ferrocene was used as a catalyst for synthesis of CNT. The major parameters was $C_2H_2$ mixing rate and mixing rates were 2 %, 6 %, and 10 %. Characteristics of CNT formation on grid were analyzed from SEM images. the chemical reaction mechanism adopted is GRI-MECH 3.0. Numerical results showed that flame temperature and CO mole fraction were increased with increasing acetylene mixing rate. Experimental results showed that the CNT synthesis in 2% acetylene mixture flame better than that of 6% and 10% acetylene mixture flames. It can be considered that 6% and 10% acetylene mixture flames generated the excessive carbon source and then it interrupted the supplement of the carbon source into ferrocene catalyst. It can be found that the supply of appropriate quantity of carbon source can make effect to synthesis of high purity of CNT.

  • This study has been constructed to establish the formation of the VC layer on various steels by immersion in fused borax bath containing Fe-V powder. The result obtained from the experiment are as follows. (1) The carbide is supposed to grow on the front surface of the carbide layers by the reaction between carbide-forming elements dissolved in the fused borax and carbon atoms successively supplied through the layer from the matrix. (2) The growth rate of the carbide layers was controlled by the diffusion rate of C in the carbide layer and C content in the matrix. (3) Carbide layer formed on the surface of the specimen is VC layer and the hardness of this layer is above $H_v$ 3000.

  • Phenolic resin used as a precursor of carbonized matrix for carbon-carbon composites was modified by addition of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi$_2$) in various concentrations of 0, 4, 12 and 20% by weight to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites. The green body was manufactured by a prepreg method and was submitted to carbonization up to 110$0^{\circ}C$. In this work, the oxidation behavior of carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ as an oxidation inhibitor was investigated at the temperature range of 600-100$0^{\circ}C$ in an air environment. The carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ showed a significantly improved oxidation resistance due to both the reduction of the porosity formation and the formation of mobile diffusion barrier for oxygen when compared to those without MoSi$_2$. Carbon active sites should be blocked, decreasing the oxidation rate of carbon. This is probably due to the effect of the inherent MoSi$_2$ properties, resulted from a formation of the protective layer against oxygen attack in the composites studied.

  • In this work, the pitch-based carbon paper (P-CP) was prepared by re-impregnating of binder pitches and PAN-based milled carbon fibers (MCF) at low temperature carbonization process. The influence of MCF content on physicochemical properties of MCF/P-CP was investigated. As a result, the tensile strength of MCF/P-CP was increased sharply from 10 wt.% to 20 wt.% of MCF. Also, the increase of MCF content led to the decrease of interfacial contact resistivity and the improvement of electrical and thermal conductivity of MCF/P-CP. These results were probably due to the increase of density of MCF/P-CP, resulting in the formation of electrically and thermally conductive paths of the carbon paper.

  • Carbon adsorbents, having the properties of molecular sieve, were prepared based on coat materials. A couple of modifiers were used to prepare carbon molecular sieve. The effects of modifier concentrations on the characteristics of carbon molecular sieve were investigated. In order to verify the characteristics of carbon molecular sieve, the adsorption rates of oxygen and nitrogen gases on the carbon molecular sieve were measured using Cahn microbalance(model # : D-200). The experimental data were fitted to an adsorption rate equation and gas diffusivities were calculated. The effects of modifier molecular weight and concentration on the characteristics of carbon molecular sieve were shown.

  • Electrochemical reduction of thionyl chloride has been carried out at glassy carbon and microelectrode that modified by macrocyclic compounds. The catalyst molecules of macrocyclic compounds were adsorbed on the electrode surface and reduced thionyl chloride resulting in a generation of oxidized catalyst molecules. The concentration of catalysts and electrode immersion time were found to affect the catalyst performance strongly. Significant improvements in cell performance have been noted in terms of both exchange rate constants of up to 10 times and power densities of up to 220% at glassy carbon electrode. The diffusion coefficients obtained at carbon microelectrode were slightly different from that determined at glassy carbon electrode.
