  • The carbon fiber epoxy composite materials have some problems, for example, seperation between carbon fiber and epoxy, delamination of lamina etc. Also, the tool wear is very serious. Therefore, we need to improve the shape of drill and condtion of drilling if possible. In this study, machinability of the carbon fiber epoxy composite materials in drilling was experimentlly investigated to establish the efficient shape of drill.

  • In this work, we have prepared the filter papers with the pitch-based activated carbon fibers and the binder fibers using wet-laid process. The influence of the binder fiber on the porosity of the filter papers has been investigated by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, the specific surface area has increased with an decrease in the content of binder fiber. It has been shown that the optimum ratio of pitch-based activated carbon fibers and the binder fibers is 70:30, resulting in high porosity, excellent bonding strength, large specific surface area ($650.4m^2/g$) and high noxious gas removal efficiency (86.9%). In addition, it has been observed that the mean pore size distribution of the fiber papers has not been affected by the binder fiber.

  • Multiscale multiphysics in structural batteries make mechanical property testing difficult. In this research, the effect of electrolyte-coating on the mechanical performance of carbon fabric was studied using a suitable mechanical test method for structural batteries. For this experiment, two types of specimens were determined their dimension according to ASTM. One type of specimen was smaller than the standard dimension. The specimens were coated by spreading the electrolyte material on carbon fabric, hardened using epoxy, and tested for tensile properties using universal testing machine. As a result, it was found that the mechanical properties of carbon fabric were not influenced by electrolyte coating. In addition, the small-scale specimen used in this experiment was determined to be sufficiently reliable.

  • A failure criterion must be considered in each failure mode and loading condition to provide easy determining strength parameters, flexibility and rational simplicity. In this study, new failure criterion was developed by introducing equivalent strength under biaxial loading of tension and torsion. The experimental results showed that the equivalent biaxial strength has a power law relation with respect to a parameter, cos($tan^{-1}R_b$). Failure strength under biaxial loadings could be predicted as a function of tensile strength, torsional strength and biaxial ratio. The scattering of experimental data could be predicted using a Weibull distribution function and the concept of equivalent biaxial strength. Also, in this study, a fatigue theory was developed based on a plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for uniaxial loading. The prediction models can be predicted a biaxial strength and fatigue life of general laminated composite naterials under multi-axial loadings.

  • In this paper, a lightweight design of the spar cap of 2MW wind turbine blade was carried out using the ply reduction ratio (PRR) and CFRP with a trade-off study. The spar cap is one of the most critical factor in determining the mechanical performance of the blade. Tsai-Wu and Puck fracture theory were used to determine the fracture. As a result, the CFRP composite material could be lighter in terms of weight by about 30% than GFRP composite material under the same conditions. Based on the analytical results, we derive the optimal value of the laminate thickness of the composite material and present the structural performance improvement and the lightweight design result.

  • Development of flame retarding polymer based materials has been studied actively due to the increase in use of polymers. The post treatment of manufactured fibers or the introduction of flame retardant into fibers is representative method for the way to improve the flame retardancy. Among the polymers, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is a precursor of carbon fiber, has been widely used for clothes. Due to low flame retardancy of PAN fiber (LOI value: 17~18%), the improvement of flame retardancy of PAN fiber is needed. In this review paper, we report preparation methods for the fabrication of post-treated (oxidization or chemical reaction) flame-retarding PAN fibers and composites composed of PAN and organic/inorganic materials (SiO2, 2D materials or CNT).

  • In order to characterize the outstanding performance of three-dimensional (3D) composites, the low velocity impact test has been carried out. 3D fiber structures have been achieved by using the automated tape placement (ATP) process and a stitching method. Materials for the ATP and the stitching process were carbon/epoxy prepreg tapes and Kevlar fibers, respectively. Two-dimensional composites with the same stacking sequence as 3D counterparts have also been fabricated for the comparison of damage tolerance. For the assessment of damage after the impact loading, specimens were subjected to C-Scan nondestructive inspection. Compression after impact (CAI) tests were conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. The damage area of 3D composites was greatly reduced $(30-40\%)$ compared with that of 2D composites. Although the CAI strength did not show drastic improvement for 3D composites, the ratio of retained strength was $5-10\%$ higher than 2D samples. The effect of stitching on the impact performance was negligible above the energy level of 35 Joules.

  • Curing behavior and interfacial properties were evaluated using electrical resistance measurement and tensile/compressive fragmentation test. Electrical resistivity difference (${\Delta}R$) during curing process was not observed in a bare carbon fiber. On the other hand, ${\Delta}R$ appeared due to the matrix contraction in single-carbon fiber/epoxy composite. Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to the infinity when the fiber fracture occurred under tensile loading, whereas that of the ED composite reached relatively broadly up to the infinity. Comparing to the untreated case, interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the ED treated composite increased significantly in both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman test. Microfailure modes of the untreated and the ED treated fiber composite showed the debonding and the cone shapes in tensile test, respectively. For compressive test, fractures of diagonal slippage were observed in both untreated and the ED treated composite. Sharp-end shape fractures exhibited in the untreated composite, whereas relatively dull fractures showed in the ED Heated composite. It is proved that ED treatments affected differently on the interfacial adhesion and microfailure mechanism under tensile/compressive tests.
