  • The purpose of this study was to assess the durability of high-strength concrete with high volume mineral admixture (HVMAC) derived from previous studies within ternary blended concrete (TBC) and normal concrete (NC). Four durability evaluation types such as chloride penetration resistance, freezing and thawing resistance, carbonation resistance in two pre-treatment conditions, and sulfuric acid and sulfate resistance using 5% sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$), 10% sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$), and 10% magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4$) solution were selected and performed in this study. HVMAC showed the excellent chloride penetration resistance in any age and the freezing and thawing durability close to 100%. In addition, HVMAC affected more reduction in carbonation resistance than TBC. When the curing time was increased, to create a concrete internal organization densely improved resistance to carbonation. HVMAC also showed the most superior in sulfuric acid and sulfate resistance. As the reduction of calcium hydroxide and $C_3A$ to apply a large amount of admixture reduced the swelling and cracking of concrete, the strength reduction and mass change of concrete was found to be small indicated.

  • Zirconia and titanium alloys, which are mainly used for dental implant materials, have poor osseointegration and osteogenesis abilities due to their bioinertness with low bioactivity on surface. In order to improve their surface bioinertness, surface modification with a bioactive material is an easy and simple method. In this study, akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7), a silicate-based bioceramic material with excellent bone bonding ability, was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and investigated its bioactivity from the analysis of surface dissolution and precipitation of hydroxyapatite particles in SBF solution. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) were used as starting materials. After homogeneous mixing of starting materials by ball milling and the drying of at oven, uniaxial pressing was performed to form a compacted disk, and then heat-treated at high temperature to induce the solid-state reaction to akermanite. Bioactivity of synthesized akermanite disk was evaluated with the reaction temperature from the immersion test in SBF solution. The higher the reaction temperature, the more pronounced the akermanite phase and the less the surface dissolution at particle surface. It resulted that synthesized akermanite particles had high bioactivity on particle surface, but it depended on reacted temperature and phase composition. Moderate dissolution occurred at particle surfaces and observed the new precipitated hydroxyapatite particles in synthetic akermanite with solid-state reaction at 1100℃.

  • Layered double hydroxides ($Mg-Al-CO_3$ systems, LDH), which are hydrotalcite-like anionic clay minerals, having different $Mg^{2+}\;to\;Al^{3+}$ ratio were synthesized by coprecipitation method. The subsequent products were characterized by the following methods; elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analysis (DSC and TGA), FT-IR and $^{27}$Al-MAS NMR. X-ray powder patterns showed that the products formed were layered structure materials. Two heat absorption peaks were observed around 20 ∼280$^{\circ}C$ (surface water and interlayer water) and 280∼500$^{\circ}C$ (water from lattice hydroxide and carbon dioxide from interlayer carbonate) in DSC diagrams, and they were quantitatively analyzed by TGA diagrams (in case LDH4 16.2% and 28.6% respectively). FT-IR spectra indicate that the interlayer carbonate ions occupied symmetrical sites between two adjacent layers in a parallel direction. $^{27}$Al-MAS NMR spectra show only single resonance (8.6 ppm) of the octahedrally coordinated aluminum similar magnesium. When LDH4 was calcined at 560$^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in air, its layered structure was destroyed giving a mixed metal oxide. However it readily became rehydrated in aqueous chromate solution to its original structure.

  • The purity of gypsum and quantitation of impurities of flue gas gypsum will not only play an important role in deciding of the optimal condition during a trial run of FGD (flue gas desulfurization), but also can be utilized in quality control of gypsum. The purity of gypsum can be determined from combined water, sulfur trioxide and calcium concentration. We found that the thermal analysis by TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) was the most accurate and convenient method to determine the purity of gypsum. This method will be done in a hour and the results were reproducible. On the other hand, the best way of the analysis of impurities in gypsum was fusion method using $LiBO_2$ as a fusion agent. We also determined the amount of $CO_2$ gas to analyze magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate contents. The analyses of combined water by TGA, fusion method followed by ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectroscopy) and determination of $CO_2$ amount can lead to more accurate and convenient method for gypsum analysis.

  • In order to utilize effectively sea mustard(Undaria pinnatifida) which is excellent in nutrition and medical action, powdered sea mustard juice was prepared and then its chemical composition and the stability of pigments were examined. Powdered sea mustard was made by washing fresh sea mustard with tap water to remove clay and sand, blanching at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 sec in mixing solution(3% salt+1% $MgCO_3$), hot air drying($50-55^{\circ}C$, 3 hrs) after draining and pulverizing dried sea mustard to 200mesh. And then powdered sea mustard mixtures for juice type beverage was made by adding 0.75% of salt, 1.25% of sugar, 0.2% of ascorbic acid, 0.25% of flour of roasted barley and 0.8% of pulverized sea mustard to 100ml of water. Chemical composition of product was not scarcely changed during processing while amino-nitrogen content was increased and alginic acid and ash contents were decreased. The retention of chlorophyll and total carotenoid pigments of product against fresh sea mustard were 91.6% and 89.5% respectively. Judging from sensory evaluation, color, flavor, taste and dispersibility of powdered sea mustard juice were excellent and undesirable flavor of product was masked by addition of flour of roasted barley.

  • Groundwater monitoring wells are important to maintain their performance for long term monitoring. The monitoring wells with extensive internal incrustation by clay adsorption were selected for this study. The performance of these monitoring wells was improved by pump washing, tube replacements for dedicated samplers, and well surging. After each improvement, the Mg, Mn, and Zn concentrations were increased. The results show that under these conditions, the monitoring wells must be carefully inspected at least once a year. Even in the case of no abnormal phenomenon like as internal incrustation, the monitoring wells need to be serviced at least once every four to five years to guarantee that they are effectively monitoring groundwater quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to elucidate the characteristic of this study is of attitudinal variation of water quality for nine representative springs in the Halla mountain region. The evolutional processes of the spring water also have been studied. Results of hydrogeochemical analyses show that Gwaneumsa spring is very high in pH. The spring waters from Yungsil, Namguksunwon, Sungpanark Oremok and Gwaneumsa which springs situated lower than 1000m in altitude are relatively high concentrations in chloride, sulphate, nitrate nitrogen and sodium ions, indicating that they are affected by surrounding pollution sources. The concentrations of bicarbonate, sulphate and hydrogen ions in spring waters increase when the precipitation increases, whereas the concentrations of nitrate nitrogen, chloride and calcium ions decrease with increasing amounts of precipitation. The magnesium, sodium and electrical conductivity are nearly independent of the precipitation. The spring waters in the Halla mountain region belong to the groups of sodium or potassium type and bicarbonate type, except the Baegrogdam and Wiseorm spring water.

  • MgO recently has been regarded as the alternative material for replacement of cement. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of accelerated carbonation on the strength development of MgO-based binder which is binary mixtures of magnesium oxide (MgO) with portland cement (PC) or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) or fly ash (FA). The compressive strengths of all binders were higher in the 20% $CO_2$ condition and for longer curing time. The strength were generally higher as the following order: MgO/PC > MgO/GGBS > MgO/FA system. The binder composed of 20% MgO and 80% PC showed highest compressive strength (38.0MPa) which was higher than PC. The correlation analysis of the porosity and compressive strength showed that compressive strength was higher when porosity was lower. The hydration and carbonation products of MgO including brucite ($Ca(OH)_2$), magnesite ($MgCO_3$) and nesquehonite ($MgCO_3{\cdot}3H_2O$) presumably filled the pores and contributed to strength development. Thermogravimetric analyses elucidated that 0.34 kg of $CO_2$ could be stored the 50% MgO/50% PC binder which performed the maximum $CO_2$ uptake at 20% $CO_2$ condition.

  • MgO powder-mixed concrete, expanded at the lower temperature around $850{\sim}1000$ degree celcius, might have long-term expansibility, which could remunerate for the contraction of concrete with delayed expansion, and through the process, the crack resistance of mass concrete might be improved. Currently used expandable concrete additive has three different types : CSA, CaO and MgO. In this study, therefore, such tests as carbonation, chloride diffusivity, freezing-thawing resistance and sulfate resistance after 56 days' curing were implemented and compared the results with the concrete with no MgO mixed to evaluate the durability of 5% MgO-mixed concrete after longer period of time. The degree of hydration for the MgO-mixed cement paste was analyzed after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 28 days, and 56 days using SEM, XRD, DSC.
