  • A new gun fire control system has been developed for the Korean next generation frigate class. The engineering requirement was far more tightened than the PKG-A class for the firing range availability and gun control function since 5 inch gun is adopted for the new ship. We mention about the principal technologies required to build a generic gun fire control system and proposed methods for the new gun fire control system. The new system has been designed based on the proposed methods in order to satisfy the requirement and functionality has been proved to be acceptable through the sea trial by Korean navy.

  • JA2 Propellants, made by non-solvent process, are of great interest for the tank gun propellant. This is due to high energy. The grain geometries of JA2 and modified JA2 propellant were designed for application to 105mm APFSDS projectile. The combustion, thermochemical, and interior ballistic properties of the propellant were tested and calculated. The performances of the propellant were evaluated out using 105mm slug T2 projectiles and 105mm tank gun. The muzzle velocity of the propellants was higher than that of the KM30 for K274 projectile.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm that identifies artillery type and rapidly predicts the impact point based on the IMM filter. The ballistic trajectory equation is used as a system model, and three models with different ballistic coefficient values are used. Acceleration was divided into three components of gravity, air resistance, and lift. And lift acceleration was added as a new state variable. The kinematic condition that the velocity vector and lift acceleration are perpendicular was used as a pseudo-measurement value. The impact point was predicted based on the state variable estimated through the IMM filter and the ballistic coefficient of the model with the highest mode probability. Instead of the commonly used Runge-Kutta numerical integration for impact point prediction, a semi-analytic method was used to predict impact point with a small amount of calculation. Finally, a state variable initialization method using the least-square method was proposed. An integrated algorithm including artillery type identification, impact point prediction and initialization was presented, and the validity of the proposed method was verified through simulation.

  • This paper describes deployment of a sea based sensor platform for the detection of a submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM). Recently, North Korea successfully conducted the underwater launching test of the SLBM, which will seriously threaten the global security. To defend these threats successfully, a sensor platform of the ballistic missile defense (BMD) should be deployed in the area of high detection probability of the missile. The maximum detection range characteristics of the typical radar sensor system, however, depend on the radar cross section (RCS) and flight trajectories of the target. In this point of view, this work analyzed the flight trajectories based on the tactics and calculated the RCS of the SLBM. In addition, sea based sensor platform position is proposed from the analysis of the detection time.

  • This paper analyses the effectiveness of Kill Chain (KC) and Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD), also known as the K2 systems, using monte carlo simulation. It is assumed that the K2 systems are consisted with unitary KC and multi-layered (upper-tier and lower-tier) KAMD. And each system has two or three arbitrary weapon systems and its combination makes 12 scenarios. Measures of effectiveness (MOE) of the K2 systems were defined as ratio of eliminated ballistic missiles from total threats. And total cost was calculated by number of weapon launched and its unit cost. MOE and total cost of the K2 systems were estimated using monte carlo simulation with a thousand iteration for each scenario. Cost-effectiveness analysis was performed and the best candidate was selected using fixed effectiveness approach. As a result, the performances of KC are prime factor that affects both effectiveness and total cost of the K2 systems. It is also, acquired proper level of lower-tier KAMD to achieve desired defense effectiveness. For future work, it needs to be performed cost-effectiveness analysis based on practical specification and life cycle cost of weapon systems.

  • When a radar tracks the warhead of a ballistic missile, decoys of a ballistic missile put a heavy burden on the radar resource management tracking the targets. To reduce this burden, it is necessary to be able to separate the signal of the warhead from the received dynamic radar cross section (RCS) signal on the radar. In this paper, we propose the method of separating the dynamic RCS of each target from the received signal by the Hough transform which extracts straight lines from the image. The micro motion of the targets was implemented using a 3D CAD model of the warhead and decoys. Then, we calculated the dynamic RCS from the 3D CAD model having micromotion and verified the performance by applying the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method can separate the signals of the warhead and decoys at the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 10dB.

  • Fire Control System(FCS) errors can be classified as hardware errors and software errors, and one of the software errors is from target tracking filter which estimates target's location, velocity, acceleration, and so on. It affects function of ballistic calculation equipment significantly. For gun to form predicted hitting point accurately and enhance hitting rate, we need status information of target's future location. Target tracking filter algorithms consist of Single Singer Model, Fixed Gain filter algorithm, IMM, PBIMM and so on. This paper will design IMM tracking filer, which is going to be! applied to domestic warship. Target tracking filter using CV model, Song model and CRT model for IMM tracking filter is made, and tracking ability is analyzed through Monte-Carlo simulation.

  • In this study, applicable to Sounding Rocket about the development of high-performance propellant was studied. Sounding Rocket requires generally multistage rocket system for atmospheric research. This study describes the development of two types solid propellant compositions which are based on HTPB/AP for the two-stage rocket. CEA code of NASA and internal ballistic analysis were used for confirming the theoretical performance of designed propellants. The strand burner and JANNAF tensile test was used to measure ballistic and mechanical properties of designed propellants. Finally, static fired test of standard motors was performed to prove the possibility of development.

  • An SLBM (submarine-launched ballistic missile) seriously threatens the national security due to its stealthiness that makes it difficult to detect in advance. We consider a destroyer deployment optimization problem for effectively detecting an SLBM. An optimization model is based on the two-person zero-sum game in which an adversary determines the firing and arriving places with an appropriate trajectory that provides a low detection probability, and we establish a destroyer deployment plan that guarantees the possibly highest detection probability. The proposed two-person zero-sum game model can be solved with the corresponding linear programming model, and we perform computational studies with a randomly generated area and scenario and show the optimal mixed strategies for both the players in the game.
