  • Recently, the tire mold of a passenger car is made almost via aluminum casting, and it is necessary to prepare a master model of the tire for the casting. Because of the geometrical feature of tire, as well known, the master model must be machined by a 5-axis NC machine. The paper proposes a procedure to model and machine the master model. The approach includes (a) transformation of 2D drawing of tire into 3D geometry, (b) modeling surfaces of tire, and (c) inverse kinematics of a 5-axis NC machine. An implementation of the proposed procedure is also presented.

  • It has been shown that the vibrational response of a tire can be represented by a set of decaying waves, each associated with a particular cross-sectional shapes, in the region near the contact patch. Thus, it can be concluded that tires can be effectively modeled as lossy waveguides. It has also been shown that the sound radiation from tires is mainly from the region close to contact patch. • TPMS is a vehicle electric system that measures the air pressure of a tire, and informs the driver of current tire states. The TPMS sensor typically uses unidirectional communication for small size, light weight, and low power. The transmission period of the sensor indicates the service quality of monitoring the tire. In order to determine the optimal transmission period, frame collision probability and the life time of the sensor should be analyzed. In this paper, collision probability model using Venn diagram is designed in low power TPMS with the normal and warning mode. And the life time and a collision probability were analyzed with the ratio(n) of the normal mode to warning mode transmission period. As a result, $T_{nP}=31sec$ and $T_{wP}=2.4sec$ at 5 years, and $T_{nP}=71sec$ and $T_{wP}=2.5sec$ at 7 years.

  • Carbonaceous adsorbent (CA-WTP) was prepared by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in N2 atmosphere using waste tire powder (WTP). WTP and CA-WTP were first characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area analysis (BET) and FT-IR spectroscopy. Then, they were tested as adsorbents for removal of Cd in water. CA-WTP exhibited much higher specific surface area and total pore volume than WTP itself and showed higher adsorption capacity for Cd. Equilibrium data of adsorption were analyzed using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms have correlation coefficient $R^2$ value larger than 0.95. The results of studies indicate that CA-WTP developed from WTP by heat treatment could be used as efficient adsorbent for the removal Cd from water.

  • Ride comfort is one of the major factors in evaluating the performance of the vehicle. Tire is closely related to the ride comfort of the vehicle as the only parts in contact with the road surface directly. Vertical stiffness which is one of the parameters to evaluate the tire performance is great influence on the ride comfort. In general, the lower the vertical stiffness, the ride comfort is improved. Research for improving the ride comfort has been mainly carried out by optimizing the shape of the pneumatic tire. However, demand for safety of the vehicle has been increased recently such as a run-flat tire which is effective in safety improvement. But a run-flat tire have trouble in practical use because of poor ride comfort than general tire. Therefore, In this paper, the research was carried out for improving the ride comfort through the optimization of the SIR shape inside a run-flat tire. Meta-model was generated by using the design of experiment and it was able to reduce the time for the finite element analysis of optimization. In addition, Shape optimization for improving the ride comfort was performed by using the genetic algorithm which is one of the global optimization techniques.

  • Tire's performance plays important roles in improving vehicle's performances. Tire makers carry out a lot of research to improve tire's performance. They are making effort to meet multi purposes using various optimization methods. Recently, the tire makers perform the shape optimization using approximation models, which are surrogate models obtained by statistical method. Generally, the reason why we increase sampling points during optimization process, is to get more reliable approximation models, but the more we adopt sampling points, the more we need time to test. So it is important to select approximation model and proper number of sampling points to balance between reliability and time consuming. In this research, we studied to compare two kind cases for a approximation construction. First, we compare RSM and Kriging which are Curve Fitting Method and Interpolation Method, respectively. Second, we construct approximation models using three different number of sampling points. And then, we recommend proper approximation model and orthogonal array adopt tire's design optimization.

  • This paper has considered the calculation of lateral stiffness of radial tire's sidewall, which consists of cord stiffness and rubber sheet stiffness, by using the material constants of rubber compounds of tire. We have suggested and illustrated how to calculate the rubber sheet lateral stiffness by considering the following aspects. First, the rubber sheet consists of various kinds of rubber compounds with different thickness along the sidewall in the radial direction. Secondly, equivalent Young's modulus of the rubber sheet can be calculated by using available experimental data of rubber compounds. The present method enables us to divide the calculation domain as many as we want, which can reduce numerical error in the calculation of geometrical and mechanical properties. We have illustrated the calculation by using the data of the radial tire for passenger car of P205/60R15.

  • This paper presents a method to determine the rear steering angle in integrated chassis control with electronic stability control (ESC) and rear wheel steering (RWS). A control yaw moment needed to stabilize a vehicle should be distributed into the tire forces generated by the ESC and RWS. Weighted pseudo-inverse control allocation (WPCA) is adopted to determine the tire forces. Four methods are proposed to calculate the rear wheel steering angle. To validate the proposed methods, a simulation is performed using a vehicle simulation software package, CarSim. The simulation results show that the proposed method for determining the rear wheel steering angle improves the performance of the integrated chassis control.

  • Vertical reaction force between ground and tire is an important parameter determining the ground behavior characteristics of aircraft. This parameter can be used to calculate the lateral force and friction. However, it is hard to obtain this parameter in real-time when the aircraft is taxiing. Therefore, pre-analysis of ground behavior and vertical reaction force should be conducted using ground simulation results to prevent rollover or hazardous scenarios. In this paper, a Landing Gear and Full-Aircraft model was constructed using VI-Aircraft S/W. The roll behavior of aircraft was analyzed using steering simulation results compared with taxi-test data.
