  • Internal or external restraint of concrete strain due to drying shrinkage and creep in concrete structures causes mechanical strain and becomes a source of persistent change in creep-causing stress conditions. Mathematical modeling to incorporate the persistent change of creep-inducing stress is generally achieved with consideration of the ages of concrete and concrete properties at the times of loadings, and stress history. This paper presents an incremental format of creep model based on parallel creep concept to depict the creep under time-varying stress history in developing creep strain. Laboratory experiments are carried out to validate the performance of the presented creep model. Typical creep phenomena are addressed through the comparisons between the measured and predicted creep strains.

  • Recent concrete structures have been being constructed with higher strength concrete than normal strength concrete. Therefore, it is necessary to review the applicabilities of current design codes and models for the prediction of mechanical behaviors of concrete materials such as creep. To investigate the applicability of creep model with the consideration of the strength level of concrete, three current models (ACI 209R, CEB-FIP MC90 and EC2) were studied and compared with series of experimental results. It was shown that EC2 model which is the updated model of CEB-FIP MC90 better predicts creep coefficient for high strength level concretes and showed relatively good agreements with experimental data.

  • The present paper focuses on the development of a realistic analysis model for the deformation calculation of reinforced concrete beams subjected to fatigue loadings. The proposed model considers the effect of cyclic creep, which arises from the repeated loading, to calculate the deformation of reinforced concrete beams. A comprehensive experimental program has been set up to identify the deformation accumulation of reinforced concrete beams under repeated loadings. The major test variables were the concrete compressive strength and the magnitude of fatigue loads. The model was calibrated from the present test results. The proposed model allows more realistic analysis of reinforced concrete beams under fatigue loads, especially deformation accumulation of such beams.

  • The heat sink system for a main board in a network server computer is built on printed circuit board by an anchor structure, mounted by eutectic SnPb solder. The solder creeping is caused by a constant high temperature condition in the computer and it eventually makes fatal failures. The FE model is used to calculate the stress and predict the life of soldered anchor in the computer. In the model, Anand constitutive equation is employed to simulate creep characteristics of solder. The creep test is conducted to verify and calibrate the solder model. A special jig is designed to mitigate the flexure of printed circuit board and to get the creep deformation of solder only in the test. Test results are compared with analysis and calibration is conducted on Anand model's constants. Precise life prediction of soldered anchor in creep condition can be performed by this model.

  • The primary objective of this study is to construct more simple and reasonable rheological model and propose a methodology for predicting a phenomenon of concrete creep. Deformations of concrete under sustained stress can be expressed by the sum of immediately elastic deformation, time-dependent and time-independent short-term creep, and long-term creep according to the mechanism and time-dependency. To simulate these deformations, a rheological model having six parameters was constructed. In the composing of each parameter, the microprestress-solidification theory and design model code were incorporated together with the numerical approach for the components which can not be theoretically approached. Finally, actual test data were applied in the verification of the proposed model, and suitability of the model was confirmed by comparisons with existing predicting models and design codes.

  • Recently, construction technology of RC structures must be examined for creep in concrete. The factors affecting the creep prediction of concrete and the results of creep in domestic construction field were reviewed. The longer the creep test period and the higher the compressive strength, the higher the creep prediction accuracy. The higher the curing temperature, the higher the initial strength development of the concrete, but the difference in the creep coefficients increased over time. Based on the results of creep evaluation in the domestic construction field and lab. tests, a modified predictive model that complements the ACI-209 model was proposed. In the creep prediction of real members using general to high strength concrete, the test period and temperature should be considered precisely.

  • A series of constant creep and repeated creep tests are performed to investigate the behavior of visco-elasto-plastic materials of chemical grouted sands. In the result of constant creep test, the material exhibits three types of shear strain : elastic, plastic, viscoelastic. The elastic, plastic and viscoelastic strains are linear, i.e., the strains are proportional to the stresses for loading. Good agreement is found between the predicted viscoelastic and test results by the power law and the generalized model. In the repeated creep test, the instantaneous recoverable strain is time-independent and the magnitude of accumulated plastic strain increases with number of cycles. Also it is seen that the accumulated plastic strains are approximately proportional to stress. There are no significant differences between test results predicted values for first cycle, and the differences increase relatively insignificantly with number of cycles.

  • Concrete structures show time-dependent behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete and the uncertainties of creep and shrinkage are very huge. To reduce uncertainties of creep and shrinkage, it is substantially necessary to perform the long-term creep and shrinkage tests, but actual construction process doesn't allow it due to the limited time. Even though the tests are performed in laboratory, the values obtained from the tests could be different from the actual values in construction site because of the different environment between the laboratory and construction site and the model uncertainty itself. It is difficult to predict the long-term behaviors of concrete structures properly if the assumed creep coefficient obtained from Codes or the results of experiments is different from the real characteristics of concrete creep. In this study, for predicting the long-term behavior, the creep coefficients in reinforced concrete beams are estimated using creep sensitivity analysis from the measured deflections with time. And estimated creep coefficients using creep models of ACI Committee 209 and CEB-FIP MC90 are compared.
