  • Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.

  • Occurrence ecology and possibility of mass trapping of Popillia quadriguttata, one of the most serious turfgrass insect pest in domestic golf courses was investigated using pheromone traps in Gimpo and Jinhae. Peak period of adult occurrence of P. quadriguttata was late June and early July in Gimpo Seaside Country Club from 2006 to 2008. It was early and middle July in Youngwon Country Club in 2006. The first catched day of P. quadriguttata adult was 20 June, while the last day was 10 September in Gimpo Seaside Country Club, 2006. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap per day in peak period of occurrence were 18.2, 25.7, 29.0, and 15.7 at 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap were more in fairways or roughs than tees or greens. Possibility of control of scarab beetle using pheromone trap with pesticide treatment was investigated against oriental beetle, Blitopertha orientalis in Dongrae Benest Golf Club. Mean number of dead oriental beetle adult were more higher(2.9 folds) in fenitrothion EC treatment than fenitrothion EC treatment after set oriental beetle pheromone trap.

  • Host plants of Popillia quadriguttata (Fabricius) were investigated in golf courses, Fifteen plant species of 15 genera in 13 families were confirmed as host plants of P. quadriguttata. Thus, total number of host plants of P. quadriguttata was 26 species of 25 genera in 18 families including 11 recorded species in literature. In addition, P. quadriguttata adults fed on 30 plant species of 25 genera in 19 families out of the 69 plant species of 53 genera in 33 families supplied as food in laboratory, P. quadriguttata adults preferred Wistaria floribunda in golf courses but Tilia mandshuric, Platanus orientalis, Diospyros lotus, Punica granatum and Chionanthus retusa in laboratory.

  • Three Korean isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae KCTC 0981BP (ScK), S. glaseri Dongrae (SgD), and Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP (HsK), were evaluated for the control of a turfgrass pest, Popillia quadriguttata. Three days after treatment, all nematodes showed high pathogenicity to adult P. quadriguttata with $97.5\%$ mortality by ScK, $90.8\%$ by HsK, and $80\%$ by SgD at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. Nematode attachment and infection rate to adult P. quadriguttata were various depending on nematode species and inoculation density. The rate of nematode attachment was $90.8\%$ in HsK, $90.6\%$ in SgD, and $35\%$ in ScK, resfectively at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. The infection rate that represents the rate of detected nematode from inside insect of body was $97.5\%$ in ScK, $ 80\%$ in both HsK and SgD at the 900 concentration of infected juveniles. The infection rate, however, was decreased to $27.5\%$ in ScK, $72.5\%$ in SgD, but no nematodes was detected in HsK at the concentration of 90 infective juveniles.

  • Korean entomopathogenic nematode strain were evaluated against white grubs, Popillia quadriguttata, Ectinohoplia rufipes and Phyllopertha diversa in laboratory. In addition we examined the efficacy of entomopatogenic nematode, Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP strain against white grubs in Seaside Golf Club in Gimpo, Gyeonggii and persistence of entomopatogenic nematode in fairway of Anyang Benest Golf Club in Gunpo, Gyeonggii. In laboratory Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Hamyang strain showed 95% mortality against Popillia quadriguttata. H. bacteriophora Hamyang strain and Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP induced 80% mortality against 3rd instar of Ectinohoplia rufipes. However, the letter showed only 60% mortality against Phyllopertha diversa. White grub density was reduced to 39% by the application of Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP at the rate of $2.24{\times}10^9$ infective juveniles $ha^{-1}$ compared with control in Seaside Golf Club. Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP persisted for two months at $5{\sim}10$ cm soil depth but not persisted at $0{\sim}5$ cm soil depth for the same periods when applied at the rate of $2.47{\times}10^9$ infective juveniles $ha^{-1}$.

  • The investigation of the kinds and density of white grubs in relation to soil texture, forages, yearsafter pasture establishment, and management methods in pasture were surveyed in Livestock ExperimentStation, Suwon by digging 5 sites($100cm{\times}100cm$) in a month from April to October during 1985.The results obtained were summarized as follows; No difference was observed in white grub speciesdivesity in relation to soil texture, forages, years after pasture establishment, and management methodof pasture, but the abundance of each species was different from the environmental factors.1. On the soil texture; Miridiba kureana, Popillia uchidai, Holotrichia mmosa and Holotrichia diomphalia occurred in the clay loam field, whereas Anomala corpulenta and Anomala mfocuprea in the sandy loam. 2. On the forage; the density of all species except Popillia uchidai was higher in grass than legume. 3. On the years after pasture extablishment; both of the species diversity and abundance were increased 3 years after pasture establishment and maximized at the 5th year.4. On the management methods of pasture; species diversity and abundance were higher in meadows thanpastures.
