  • Riverbank filtration is a natural process, using alluvial aquifers to remove contaminants and pathogens in river water for the production of drinking water. In Korea, most of the drinking water is supplied by surface water in-take. However, maintaining the quality of the drinking water becomes more and more difficult due to the increase of contamination. In riverbank filtration, the understanding of contaminant transport is an important task for the production of high quality drinking water and for the maintenance of facilities. In this paper, the transport behavior of hydrophobic organic contaminants is investigated when contaminants coexist with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and bacteria. In the developed model, the aquifer is thought of as a four phase system: two mobile colloidal phases, an aqueous phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. The model equations are solved numerically for various situations. Results indicate that the presence of colloidal matters can enhance the mobility of contaminant significantly and that partitioning coefficients play an important role in the process.

  • Nano-sized mullite (3Al$_2$O$_3$$.$2SiO$_2$) colloids were prepared by use of the spray combustion method. For combustion reaction, Al(NO$_3$)$_3$$.$9$H_2O$, and CH$_{6}$N$_4$O were used as an oxidizer and a fuel respectively, and then colloidal silica was also added as 2SiO$_2$source for mullite. The temperature of the reaction chamber was kept at 80$0^{\circ}C$ to initiate the ignition of droplets of the mixed precursors. For preventing droplet coagulation, the droplet number concentration was reduced using the metal screen filter, and the residence time of aerosol was kept at 2.5 seconds for laminar flow. The synthesized colloidal particles had an uniform spherical shape with 130 nanometer size and the crystalline phase showed the mullite with stoichiometry in the observations of XRD and TEM.

  • Silver particles were impregnated on carbon black with colloidal method and used as catalyst for oxygen electrode in alkaline fuel cell. With the addition of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate in $AgNO_3$ and $NaBH_4$solution, colloidal solution was made and confirmed with electrophoresis test. Effects of particle size on electrode performance were studied and $200{\AA}$ of silver particle size shown the highest value of mass activity. The aggromeration of silver particle was Influenced with surfactant amount, stirring time and heat treatment. Considering the increase of particle size caused of operating temperature, recommendable particle size of silver catalyst for manufacturing the electrode was $100{\AA}$. Dispersity of carbon black was investigated and reagglomeration was appeared after homogenizing 30 sec.

  • In order to improve the surface hardness of transparent plastic films, an organic-inorganic hybrid coating solution was sunthesized by the sol-gel method. Coating solutions that were prepared colloidal silica (CS), poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), and [3-(methacryloyloxy)]propyltrimethoxy silane (MAPTMS) was varied with synthesizing parameters such as kinds of organic silane and weight ratio of CS to PMMA. Such coating solution was bar coated on the PET film, cured, and investigated on the chemical and physical properties of coating film. The organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions have better properties at the pencil hardness and adhesion of coating film than those of an organic material such as PMMA.

  • Nano-sized ZnO colloids were prepared by use of spray combustion method. for combustion reaction, $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $CH_6N_4O$ were employed as an oxidizer and a fuel. Exothermic peak was shown at $230^{\circ}C$ by DTA/TGA, and it was considered as a combustion reaction followed by ignition of the precursor mixture. In case of spray combustion method, because insufficient contents of molecules and radicals generated from precursor droplets may lead an incomplete igmition, the ignition temperature of combustion chamber was chosen at $500^{\circ}C$. For diminishing aerosol coagulation, the droplet number concentration was reduced by filter media. The fluid was laminar with 2.5 seconds of aerosol residence time. The synthesized colloids had spherical shape with 180 nanometer size, and the crystalline phase was ZnO with hexagonal structure.

  • A novel methodology on the calculations of osmotic pressure and gradient diffusion coefficient has been provided ill the present study, by applying a succinct numerical analysis on the experimental results. Although both the osmotic pressure and the gradient diffusion coefficient represent a fundamental characteristic in related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration, neither theoretical analysis nor experiments can readily determine them. The osmotic pressure of colloidal suspension has been successfully determined from a relationship between the data of the time-dependent permeate flux, their numerical accumulations, and their numerical derivatives. It is obvious that the osmotic pressure is gradually increased, as the particle concentration increases. The thermodynamic coefficient was calculated from the numerical differentiation of the correlation equation of osmotic pressure, and the hydrodynamic coefficient was evaluated from the previously developed relation for an ordered system. Finally, the estimated gradient diffusion coefficient, which entirely depends on the particle concentration, was compared to the previous results obtained from the statistical mechanical simulations.

  • In order to improve the hydrophilic property of polymer films, coating solutions which showed a good hydrophilic property, were prepared by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding different types of silane coupling agents (aminosilane, epoxysilane and acrylsilane) to a colloidal silica (15 nm diameter). The solutions prepared by adding aminosilane resulted in gels which could not be used as coating solutions. On the other hand, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of epoxysilane showed contact angles of $10{\sim}15^{\circ}$ and good hydrophilic property at R=0.10~0.15 (R=silane coupling agent/colloidal silica weight ratio). In addition, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of acrylsilane at R=0.03~0.07, exhibited contact angles of $5{\sim}10^{\circ}$, which means better hydrophilic property than aminosilane or epoxysilane.

  • We analyzed the wear characterization of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics according to the amount of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid. The test specimen was prepared by hot-press sintering at 35 MPa and 2123 K in an $N_2$ gas atmosphere for 1 h. A wear test was performed with a block-on-ring tester, and the test conditions were as follows: (1) the ring with a diameter of 35 mm had a rotational speed of 50 rpm; (2) the load was 9.8 N; and (3) the temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. The test results show that $Si_3N_4$ ceramics have a friction coefficient of about 1.0 and a wear loss of about 0.02 mm. Of the specimens used this study, the test specimen with 1.3 wt% of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid has the best wear resistance because it has the lowest friction coefficient and the smallest wear loss. This specimen also has the highest Vickers hardness and bending strength. In this study, the friction coefficient is inversely proportional to the hardness and bending strength.

  • The constant-pressure and constant-flux membrane filtration experiments of alumina colloidal solution are performed to investigate defouling effect of the natural convection instability flow (NCIF) induced in membrane module. The permeate flux at constant-pressure and the transmembrane pressure (TMP) at constant-flux experiments are measured by changes the inclined angle (0, 90 and 180°) of membrane module to the gravity, and flux results are analyzed by using the blocking filtration model. NCIF are more induced as the inclined angles increased from 0° to 180°, and the maximum induced NCIF at 180° angle enhances flux to 2.8 times and reduces TMP to 85% after two-hour operation. As a result of analyzing flux data by applying the blocking filtration model, it is more reasonable to analyze them by using the intermediate blocking model within 15-minute operation time and then thereafter times by using the cake filtration model. The induced NCIF at 180° angle reduces the intermediate blocking fouling at 52% in the early operation time of 15-minute and thereafter the cake layer fouling at 93%. The main membrane fouling control mechanism of NCIF induced in membrane module is evaluated as suppressing the formation of the cake layer of particulate colloidal materials on membrane surface.

  • We studied the effects of induction of natural convection instability flow (NCIF) according to the gravitational orientation (inclined angle) of the membrane cell on the reduction of membrane fouling in the constant-flow ultrafiltration (UF) of colloidal silica solutions. Five colloidal silica solutions with different silica size (average size = 7, 12, 22, 50 nm and 78 nm) were used as UF test solutions. The silica particles in colloidal solutions form cakes on the membrane surface thereby causing severe membrane fouling. The constant-flow UF performance according to the gravitational orientation of the membrane cell (from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ inclined angle), was examined in an unstirred dead-end cell. We evaluate the effects of NCIF on the suppression of fouling formation by measuring the variation of transmembrane pressure (TMP) and the increase of critical flux by using the flux-stepping method. In the constant-flow dead-end UF for the smaller size (7, 12 nm and 22 nm) silica colloidal solutions, changing the gravitational orientation (inclined angle) of the membrane cell above the $30^{\circ}$ angle induces NCIF in the membrane module. This induced NCIF enhances back transport of the deposited silica solutes away from the membrane surface, therefore gives for the reduction of TMP. But in the constant-flow UF for the more larger size (50 nm and 78 nm) silica colloidal solutions, NCIF effects are not appearing. The critical flux is increased as increasing the module angle and decreasing the silica size. Those results show that the intesity of NCIF occurrence in membrane module is more higher as increasing the module angle and decreasing the silica size.
