In case of Korea highways, about 60% of highways are paved by concrete and more than 50% of them were repaired due to reduction in required performance such as damage in pave or joint and delamination of cover pavement. However, repairing old material in such structure generally costs a lot of money and induces difficulty in maintenance. Thus, enhanced material for ensuring economic efficiency should be developed. The present study designed concrete mixtures with 3 levels of replacement using OPC (0, 10, 20%) in calcium aluminate cement and to evaluate material performance for load pavement, experimental works for setting time, compressive strength and flexural strength were carried out on those materials. As a result, 20% replacement for OPC was determined as an optimized material in terms of required physical performance and its unit price. Moreover, to determine cost in load pavement economy analysis using a program (CA4PRS) was conducted with widely used paving materials. Result showed that application for 20% replacement for OPC was the most efficient in economical aspect, arising from 4.052 and 1.577 billion won for total construction and user cost, respectively.

Cement industries are considered key industries for reducing carbon emissions, and efforts are off the ground to reduce the use of cement in the concrete sector. As a part of this effort, research is off the ground to utilize a large amount of industrial by-products that can be used as a substitute for a part of cement. Concrete using industrial by-products has advantages such as durability, environment friendliness and economical efficiency, but there are problems such as retarding and early-age strength deterioration. Therefore, this study aimed to reduce the use of cement and solve the problem of early-age strength deterioration while using fly ash, which is an industrial by-product. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the strength was improved at all ages irrespective of curing temperature by accelerating the hydration reaction by using high fineness cement. Subsequently, high fineness cement was partially replaced with fly ash and the strength development characteristics were examined. As a result, it was possible to exhibit strength equal to or higher than ordinary portland cement even at the early age. Also, it was confirmed that even when the fly ash is replaced by 30%, it is possible to shorten the time for dismantling the forms of vertical and horizontal members.
MgO concrete containing lightly burnt MgO powder at $850{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ may have a long-term expansibility characteristic. Such expansibility of MgO concrete can compensate the shrinkage at later ages since the hydration of the MgO is very slow. However, the addition of MgO delays the initial hydration of cement and increases the setting time of cement. Also, the porosity and pore-size distribution of the MgO concrete are different from OPC concrete. Therefore, in order to use MgO in practice, both mechanical and durability properties of MgO concrete should be carefully examined. In this study, durability tests on carbonation, freezing-thawing, and diffusion of chloride were carried out after 56 days of underwater curing at $20^{\circ}C$ to compare durability characteristics of 5% MgO-mixed concrete with those of OPC concrete. The results showed that MgO concrete shows a greater durability than the concrete with no MgO, because the micro structure in the MgO concrete is much denser due to its expansibility characteristic.

In this research, experiments were conducted to find out whether polycarboxylate could be used as a crude steel admixture for practical work, depending on the change in the replacement level of the compound mixed into polycarboxylate. Its fluidity was satisfactory, its airspace was a bit smaller than the KS standard, and its unit volume weight was proven to meet the standard. The amount of bleeding was smallest in B2, and in terms of the solidification time, the first and the last solidification was faster in A1, B1, and C1. With regard to the compressive strength in early days as acharacteristic of hardened concrete, all addition rates of 7-day C2 displayed the highest strength value, among which the addition rate of 1.3% had the biggest strength performance tendency. The seal strength also showed the strength performance rate which was about one tenth as big as that of the compressive strength. The length change rate resulting from dryness and contraction was proven to be good, and once the appropriate AE air entraining agent is used, it is evaluated to be a very useful and practical compound out in the field.

The heat of hydration can be reduced through the use of retarding agents. Typical retarding agents include sugar and glucose. However, these significantly delay the setting of cement paste. For the efficient use of sugar and glucose for mass concrete construction, it is necessary to develop a technique that can provide a setting behavior equivalent to that of plain concrete. In this work, the temperature rise of cement paste was monitored with the addition of various retarders including sugar and glucose. Hydrated cement powder was made with a water to cement ratio of 5 in order to accelerate the retarded cement pastes. It was found that the addition of hydrated cement powder in retarded pastes reduced the maximum temperature of cement paste. The use of hydrated cement powder could also successfully reduce the time to reach the maximum temperature.
Many researches have been performed on concrete with fly ash and bottom ash. However researches on concrete with pond ash (PA) and its application to RC (Reinforced Concrete) structure are limitedly carried out. This paper presents an applicability of PA concrete in construction of real size structure. Referring to the previous study, 2 domestic PA samples with normal performance are selected and 2 replacement ratios (25% and 50%) to fine aggregate are considered for 5 PA concrete structures consisting of column, slab, and wall. In order to evaluate the property of fresh concrete, several tests including air content, slump, and setting time are performed. Using cored out samples from hardened PA concrete structure, tests for strength, resistance to carbonation and chloride penetration are carried out and compared with control samples. Additionally, tests for rebound hardness, drying shrinkage, and hydration heat are performed for PA concrete structure. The test results showed that PA concrete has reasonable strength and durability performances compared to those of normal concrete. Therefore, its potential application to RC structure is promising. The PA aggregate can be more actively used for RC structures with better quality control for content of fly ash, bottom ash, and unburned carbon.

The fly ash has been widely used in the latest to complement the performance and economical efficiency of the concrete which uses only a normal portland cement, the pulp ash gained through the incineration of paper sludge is possible to be used as the material of concrete because it contains the properties similar to the previous fly ash in ingredients and physical characteristics. Therefore, this research has tested physical characteristics by replacing 20% of fly ash used with the paper ash to solve the problem which lowers the early strength caused when the fly ash was used. As a result, it showed that the fluidity becomes lower and the compressive strength becomes increased by using paper ash. In addition, after mixing the paper ash with the fly ash, it showed that time and heating amount of the 2nd peak of the minor heat of hydration affecting the revelation of strength was equivalent to the combination for normal portland cement, and also indicated that the compressive strength for 3 days is superior to the combination of the fly ash. Therefore, if the paper ash having a regular fineness is used, it was effective in improving the early strength of concrete used the fly ash.
In this study, performance of hardening accelerator types which promote setting and hardening of cement has been reviewed in order to develop early age strength of concrete with compressive strength of 21~27 MPa after examination of strength development of the concrete at early age according to curing temperature and unit cement(binder) content. As results, soluble mineral salt showed better hardening acceleration effect than organic salt in the scope of this study. Also, hydration reaction accelerating effect of $C_3S$ by Soluble mineral salt is effective on development of early age compressive strength and it was shown that the Pt's hydration reaction accelerating effect was the best. Construction duration reduction can be expected by securing compressive strength for prevention of early aged freezing damage in 25hour-curing time under curing temperature at $15^{\circ}C$. Also, it was shown that compressive strength of specimen cured at $5^{\circ}C$ was similar with plain specimen cured at $10^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is expected that fuel costs and carbon dioxide can be reduced when the same construction duration is considered.

In the current study, retarding type and standard type admixture design of concrete have been proposed to control the generation of hydration heat for foundation members that use high strengths concrete. Finite element analysis also has been conducted to understand the rational placing heights of concrete. In addition, real-size structures have experimented and their results were compared to the analytical results to evaluate the reducing effect of thermal stress. For a large $6.5m{\times}6.5m{\times}3.5m$ member with retarding and standard type horizontal partition placement of concrete showed the manageable possibility of temperature difference within 25-degree Celcius between the middle and surface portion while the maximum temperature was 77-degree Celcius. Also, temperature cracking index from the finite element analysis appeared to be 1.49 that predicts no formation of cracking due to the effects of temperature. Finally, it appeared that horizontal partition placement of retarding and standard type concrete has the significant effect of reducing the thermal stress that generated by the hydration heat in the high strengths mass concrete.
To study the effect of incorporation of a surface crosslinking layer on a crosslinked poly (sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate CEGDMA), we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with EGDMA by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete, Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. cPSA was synthesized with acrylic acid (AA) neutralized with aqueous 8 M sodium hydroxide solution as a monomer, N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) as a redox initiator system by inverse emulsion polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with cPSA and cPSA-EGDMAs. The swelling ratios of synthesized absorbents were evaluated from the absorption in deionized water, cement saturated aqueous solution and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (pH 12). Equilibrium swelling times for cPSA and surface crosslinked cPSA with EGDMA were 2 and 3 hrs, respectively. We also observed an increase in setting time of the cement and an increase in the compressive strength of mortar by addition of the synthesized cPSA-EGDMA.
