The purpose of seed certification is to preserve the genetic purity and identity of seed varieties. This study is to provide information concerning seed certification procedures and certification standards of Kentucky bluegrass especially used in golf courses. We analyzed data from the seed certification standards of three states (Washington, Idaho and Oregon) in U.S.A. The certification processes both field inspection and laboratory requirement satisfying the minimum seed quality standards. The seed harvesting field must be propagated with the specified class of seeds and requires an adequate isolated distance from other crops. Moreover, the field should be clean and free from the objectionable weeds. The seed analysis tests include a germination rate, a percentage of pure seed, contents of other crop seed, weed seed, and inert matter. The certification standards of the certified seed and the sod quality seed showed general similarity in all three states. The certification standards of the sod quality seed should have less than 0.02% of maximum weed seed. The certified seed should have less than 0.3% of maximum weed seeds. Those certification standards of seed quality should guaranty the quality of turfgrass establishment of golf course.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on the reduction of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) which can help improve ecological functions in cities and mitigation of climate change, through quantifying $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration by the process of photosynthesis of some plants. Experiment of $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration was conducted by measurement of $CO_2$ exchange rate using the infrared gas analyzer, for 7 month, growing season from May to November 2009, 2 times a month. The result was as follows; The $CO_2$ uptake quantity per $cm^2$ of Chrysanthemum zawadskii was the highest rate at $21.47{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$ and Poa pratensis was $16.20g{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$. The stronger was light of intensity, the higher were $CO_2$ uptake rate of most plants. In quantity of evapotranspiration, Poa pratensis was the highest rate at $8.75{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$ and Aquilegia buergariana was $8.66{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$. From this study, it is confirmed that artificial ground greening has capacity of absorption $CO_2$ and effects on improving urban microclimate.

Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements of the phospholipids that are involved in the formation of plant cell membranes. Phosphorus is highly immobile in soils and is often a limiting nutrient for plant growth. Phosphorus mobility and availability varies with several factors such as application frequency, placement in the soil, and the amount of irrigation or precipitation. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of P applications at level of 0, 146, and 293 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at four mixing depths (0, 7.6, 15.2, and 22.9 cm )on the growth and establishment of Kentucky bluegrass (Poapratensis L.) in a sand-based system.Grass clipping samples were collectedevery two weeks, dried, and weighed. Total root dry weight, root organic matter, and tissue content of P were measured at the end of the study. Leachate was collected weekly and analyzed for total P concentration. No difference was found between application of P to the surface and to the 7.6 cm mixing depth. However, surface application with 146 and 293 kg $P{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ produced 8-10% and 16-20% more P in tissue than subsurface applications, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of root growth in Kentucky bluegrass sod(KBS) and creeping bentgrass sod(BGS) transplanted in summer(August 9) and fall(September 19), respectively. Hydroponic system was also used to observe rooting development in the study. Root development differed in KBS by transplanting time. It reached to more than 5 cm after 100 days In summer and 50 days in fall. However, BGS's root grew over 6cm after 40 days, regardless of the season. There was no significant differences in BGS, regardless of any cutting treatment. In the case of KBS, it was best with sod culled with 0.5cm deep and 1.5cm long. But it grew beyond 5 cm in root growth under any treatment after 40 days in transplanting. In a hydroponic study, BGS produced root over 100cm for 80 days through a summer season. However, the root of KBS did only grow in condition below $20^{\circ}C$. These results indicated that root growth characteristics were variable in BGS and KBS. It was considered that rooting development of BGS might be improved with sufficient irrigation in summer, and KBS grows well in lower temperature of $10{\sim}18^{\circ}C$, as compared with BGS. As to establishing the lawn with a sodding method, it should be careful in transplanting time, especially KBS.

This study examined the improved effect of wear tolerance of warm-season turfgrass overseeded with cool-season turfgrasses. Also, it investigated the improved effect of crumb rubber on wear tolerance and the difference anmong cultivars regarding the wear of Zoysia spp. In wear experiment during summer, the warm-season turfgrass overseed with cool-season turfgrasses had a higher visual rating on the ground than the monostand of Cynodon dactylon. Moreover, in wear experiment in winter, barrenness showed significant progress in the monostand of C. dactylon, while the barrenness did not appear at all in overseeded turf with cool-season turfgrasses. As a result of investigating the bulk density was increased in the monostand of C. dactylon, but not in the overseed turf with cool-season turfgrasses. From the above result, the wear tolerance effcect of turfgrasses appeared year round through warm-season and cool-season turfgrass mixtures. Also, it was found that the method of topdressing crumb rubber on the ground was effective as a physical assistant device alleviating damage of turfgrasses. The possibility of improving wear tolerance was accepted by adding soil amendments such as perlite, pamis, etc., in order to promote the growth of turfgrass.
This study was initiated to evaluate green color retention under three different soil systems. Several turfgrasses were evaluated in multi-layer, USGA, and mono-layer systems. Turfgrass entries were comprised of three cultivars of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) as warm-season grass (WSG) and three blends and three mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), and tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) as cool-season grass (CSG). Significant differences were observed in visual turf color and green color retention among soil systems and turfgrasses. Both the multi-layer and USGA systems were highly associated with better color ratings and longer color retention, as compared with the mono-layer system. Seasonal variation of visual turf color greatly occurred from late December to early spring. CSG exhibited longer color retention than did WSG. The latter maintained green color for approximately 6 months, regardless of the soil system. Spring green-up of Korean lawngrass occurred from early to middle May, while it underwent discoloration from late October to early November. Among the CSGs green-up occurred between early March and early April and leaf color was maintained until middle December to early February. Therefore, the CSGs were green for 8.5 to 11 months, depending on turfgrass and soil system. The mean period of green color duration across all soil systems was approximately 10-11, 9-10 and 8.5-9.0 months for PR, KB and TF, respectively. As for the CSG mixtures, the greater the proportion of PR, the longer the green color retention, while the higher the proportion of TF, the shorter the color retention. There was greater variation in green color duration among the CSGs than the WSGs. Across soil systems, color retention differences of 2 to 6 days were observed for the Korean lawngrass, but 7 to 36 days for the CSGs. These results demonstrate that green color retention varied greatly according to soil systems and also among turfgrasses. Selections of turfgrass and soil system should be made using a concept-oriented approach, when establishing garden, park, soccer field, golf course and other sports field. Information obtained in this study can be used to select soil systems and turfgrasses based on the expected degree of leaf color retention.
Recent climatic changes by global warming include increased amount and intensity of rainfall. This study was conducted to find out possible roles of turfgrasses to reduce the impact of climatic changes, especially surface soil erosion. Soil erosions by intensive rain were measured after each significant precipitation from the artificially sloped plots of zoysiagrass, cool-season grass mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass and other typical korean summer crops. Sodded zoysiagrass resulted in minimal annual soil erosion followed by strip-sodded zoysiagrass and cool-season turfgrass mixture while dry-field rice and bean cultivations eroded the surface soils of 5 to 10 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ and pepper cultivation resulted in 7 to 14 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ annual loss of surface soil. Annual loss of surface soil from bare land with hand weeding was up to 18 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ while greatly reduced soil erosion was observed from weed grown treatment.

This study has been conducted to investigate the appropriate mixed sowing rates with white clover (Trifolium repens) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) by evaluating initial growth. Six different mixed sowing rates (CT, Control Trifolium repens; CP, Control Poa pratensis; T1P3, Trifolium repens 1 : Poa pratensis 3; T1P2, Trifolium repens 1 : Poa pratensis 2; T1P1, Trifolium repens 1 : Poa pratensis 1; T2P1, Trifolium repens 2 : Poa pratensis 1; T3P1, Trifolium repens 3 : Poa pratensis 1) with three repetitions were implemented in greenhouse experiment plastic pots (50.5 length × 35.0 width × 8.5 cm height). Plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight were measured after a week from the germination for three months. Initial growth of Kentucky bluegrass significantly increased as mixed sowing rates with increasing, while that of white clover kept relatively decreasing than that in Control. Initial growth strongly affected sowing mixed rates by Kentucky bluegrass and not by white clover in this experiment, indicating that grasses played a dominant role during initial growth period. However, seeding rates with white clover will be dependent on the use of a turf and the desired green cover. There remains a need to further study of the mechanisms and dynamics of legume and grass competition to underpin sustainable management practices.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of compound fertilizer contained slow release nitrogen such as isobutylidene diurea(IBDU) and methylene urea(MU) on kentucky bluegrasss and the change of nitrogen in the root zone after supplying these at AM turfgrass research institute with soil analysis, chlorophyll content index, leaf area index and dry weight during 6 months from July to December in 2007 year. Fertilizer treatments were designed as following; non-fertilizer(NF), straight fertilizer(CF), methylene urea(MU), isobutylidene diurea(IBDU). The every treatments were arranged a randomized complete block with three replications. Results obtained were summarized as follows: As relative to time after N fertilizers application, ammonium and nitrate in soil were increased, but T-N was decrease. The change of ratio of available Nand T-N by elapsed time after fertilizing was decreased in CF from 30days but increased until 45days. Compared with NF, the turf color index in CF, MU and IBDU was increased 1.5%, 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively, the chlorophyll content 16%, 25% and 26%, the dry weight 31%, 62% and 46% and shoot number 104%, 185% and 148%. The chlorophyll content index of MU and IBDU was increased 7.5% and 8.8% than that of CF, shoot number 40% and 22%, and dry weight 24% and 12% but turf color index was similar to that of CF. These results showed that the MU and IBDU application was supplied nitrogen for a long time in root zone by increasing an available nitrogen, and so promote turf grass growth such as chlorophyll content and shoot number in kentucky bluegrass.

Research was initiated to investigate early establishment characteristics and germination pattern of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.) under natural room temperature and to analyze differences between alternative and natural conditions for a practical application. Fifteen cultivars of KB were evaluated in the study. Daily and cumulative germination pattern were measured and analyzed on a daily basis. Differences were observed in germination percentage, germination pattern, days to the first germination and days to 75% germination. Germination percentage was variable with cultivars at the end of study. It was 75.75 to 90.25% under natural condition. There were considerable variations in early germination characteristics and germination pattern among KB cultivars according to germination conditions. The first germination in all entries tested was initiated between 6 and 9 DAS (days after seeding) under ISTA (International Seed Testing Association) condition. But it was observed between 9 and 12 DAS under natural condition, being 3 to 5 days later as compared with ISTA condition. On the first date of a germinating process, the germination rate was 0.25% to 25.00% under ISTA condition, while 0.50% to 13.25% under natural condition. Days to the 75% germination were 15.08 to 28.80 DAS under ISTA condition and 17.78 to 28.75 DAS under natural condition. Midnight II, Excursion and Midnight were the fastest cultivars under ISTA condition, while Odyssey the fastest one under natural condition. Regardless of germination condition, the slowest cultivar was Voyager II, being over 4 weeks to 75% germination percentage. For the most cultivars, days to 75% germination under natural room temperature condition were 1 to 8 days slower than under ISTA condition. From this study information on differences in germination characteristics and pattern among cultivars would be usefully applied for KB establishment such as golf course construction. Prior to on-site seeding, a comprehensive germination test is practically recommended due to a possible decline in germination capability during domestic distribution and storage after import.
