  • Edible sprouts are highly nutritious, containing numerous health-promoting phytochemicals and nutrients. However, the process of sprouting is subject to potential contamination by microorganisms attached to the seed coat. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of air anions generated by spray ionization on growth and sterilization of edible sprouts. Treatment with air anions has positive effects on plant growth and sterilization in 4 kinds of sprouts. Hypocotyl length in red cabbage and kale increased approximately 1.26-fold and radicle length of lettuce, red cabbage, and kale increased 1.4 to 1.6-fold compared to the control. The fresh weight of sprouts in the spray-ionization treatment was significantly (16.0-38.5%) higher than that of the controls. Radicle activity in sprouts exposed to anions was higher than that of the control in all species. Bacterial counts on lettuce, red cabbage, and tatsoi decreased significantly (by 41%, 66%, and 19%, respectively), and bacterial colonies also declined in drainage water. Our findings suggest that spray-ionization treatment is useful for improving sprout growth and for sterilizing sprouts.

  • In this paper, we introduce four different approaches of proving Cayley formula, which counts the number of trees(acyclic connected simple graphs). The first proof was done by Cayley using recursive formulas. On the other hands the core idea of the other three proofs is the bijective method-find an one to one correspondence between the set of trees and a suitable family of combinatorial objects. Each of the three bijection gives its own generalization of Cayley formula. In particular, the last proof, done by Seo and Shin, has an application to computer science(theoretical computation), which is a typical example that pure mathematics supply powerful tools to other research fields.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an intermittent aeration mode to reduce the membrane fouling in a submerged membrane process using the specifically devised module (YEF 750D-2). The fluid velocity on the module increased with increasing the supplied air volume, and decreased with the increment of MLSS in the biological reactor. The reduction rate of the fluid velocity was found to be $3\times10^{-4}m{\cdot}min/sec{\cdot}L$ per 1,000 mg MLSS/L increased. In the operation of the intermittent aeration, the intermitted stop of the aeration provoked the formation of a cake layer on the gel layer which was previously formed during the aeration, resulting in the highly increased TMP level. However, the TMP level could be significantly lowered by the subsequent backwashing and aeration that effectively removed the cake along with the gel layer on the membrane surface. In this study, the optimum condition for the intermittent aeration was determined to be aeration for 20 sec and pause for 20 sec.

  • The Streptomyces peucetius OIM (Overproducing Industrial Mutant) strain is a recursively-mutated and optimally-screened strain used for the industrial production of polyketide antibiotics, such as doxorubicin (DXR). Using the S. peucetius OIM mutant strain as a surrogate host, a model minimal polyketide pathway for aloesaponarin II, an actinorhodin shunt product, was cloned in a high-copy conjugative plasmid, followed by functional pathway expression and quantitative metabolite analysis. The level of aloesaponarin II production was noted as being significantly higher in the OIM strain than in the wild-type S. peucetius, as well as in the regulatory network-stimulated S. coelicolor mutant strain. Moreover, the aloesaponarin II production level was seen to be even higher in a down-regulator $wblA_{spe}$-deleted S. peucetius OIM strain, implying that the rationally-engineered S. peucetius OIM mutant strain could be used as an efficient surrogate host for the high expression of foreign polyketide pathways.

  • Education system of Korea faced to enterance examination of universities in modern capitalism society. Education authority is confused by this, and then schools lost their goal for education. Mu-Wi in "Tao Te Ching" of Lao-tzu in one of Chinese old philosophers and ${\kappa}{\varepsilon}vo{\varsigma}$ of "Philippians" 2:6-11 give important meanings to modern people. Mu-Wi is anti-meaning of Jak-Wi or In-Wi, and means doing with natural state. This means that politicians do follow natural rule returing Jak-Wi or In-Wi to Mu-Wi in society with Jak-Wi or In-Wi. In addition, the meaning of ${\kappa}{\varepsilon}vo{\varsigma}$ is to love and serve people for calling of mankind from God through Jesus who gave himself to death in the society with hate and Jealous. It is great lesson of the saint and gives valuable and important meaning in education reality of Korea.

  • BACKGROUND: Plant growth under smart greenhouse (that is plant factory system) conditions of an artificial light type is significantly depending on the artificial light sources such as a fluorescent lamps or Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) with specific spectral wavelengths regardless of the outside environmental changes. In this experiment, characteristics on the growth and compound synthesis of kale seedlings affected by light qualities and intensities provided by LEDs were mentioned. METHODS AND RESULTS: The kale seedlings which developed 3~4 true leaves were exposed by fluorescent lamps or LEDs lights of red (R), blue+white (BW), blue+red (BR) with 50 (L) or $100(H){\mu}mol/m^2/s^1$ photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) under hydroponic culture system of deep flow technique for 50 days. Shoot fresh weight increased under the RH, BWH, and BRH treatments with higher PPF. Shoot elongation of the seedlings decreased, and polyphenol synthesis promoted by the higher light intensity conditions. Sugar synthesis in the leaves was above 2 times greater under the RH treatment of monochromic red light quality with $100{\mu}mol/m^2/s^1\;PPF$ than $50{\mu}mol/m^2/s^1\;PPF$. CONCLUSION: The results show that the control of light quality and intensity in the smart greenhouse conditions with artificial lights significantly affects the growth and compound synthesis in the fresh kale leaves with higher culture efficiency compared to the conventional soil culture under greenhouse or field conditions. Researches on the optimum light intensities of the LEDs with special spectral wavelengths are necessary for maximum growth and metabolism in the seedlings.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the amounts of glucosinolates (GSL) in kale at various development stages. Kale varieties 'Manchoo Collard' and 'TBC' were cultivated from 20 February 2012 to 3 July 2013 in the greenhouse at Chungnam National University. During the cultivation periods, samples were harvested at 35, 63, 91, 105, 119, and 133 days after sowing (DAS) and the amount of GSL quantified by HPLC. Ten types of GSL (progoitrin, sinigrin, glucoalyssin, gluconapin, glucoiberverin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, gluconasturtiin, and neoglucobrassicin) were observed in 'TBC', whereas nine types of GSL (the same as above, except glucoiberverin) were identified in 'Manchoo Collard'. The amount of total GSL in 'Manchoo Collard' was comparatively higher at 133 DAS (mean $8.64{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and lower at 35 DAS ($1.16{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight, DW) of cultivation. In the case of 'TBC', the amount of GSL was higher at 91 DAS (mean $13.41{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and lower at 35 DAS ($0.31{\mu}mol{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight, DW). Sinigrin was the most abundant GSL (57% of total GSL) in 'Manchoo Collard' at 133 DAS and was also highest (44%) in 'TBC' at 91 DAS. Together, progoitrin, sinigrin, glucobrassicin, and gluconasturtiin, the precursor of crambene, allylisothiocyanate, indol-3-cabinol, and phenethylisothiocyanate accounted for 94 and 78% of GSL in 'Manchoo Collard' and 'TBC', respectively. Our results demonstrate that the amounts of GSL, which have potential anti-carcinogenic activity, change during development in kale.
