  • Because of the unique images of monsters and people curious about the unknown things in the game, gamers escape from ordinary life to explore a whole new world of games in the virtual space.   • 'Fashion' is one of the most important aspects in game character design. However, despite its influence, analytical approaches in integrating fashion design methods in character designs are rare practices within the industry. The following paper aims point out the practicality of integrating and utilizing theoretical and formative methods in fashion design in creating character concept designs and show how the following application can create visual stimuli for artists in future concepts.

  • The 21st century is as an age of culture, and cultural goods presenting the cultural spirit of one nation should reflect the tradition, culture, and techniques of that nation. The twelve horary signs of the gods are the creatures of our nation's native religion and thought have existed from the unified Silla period to today. Therefore, many things belong to the category of cultural goods, but in this study the guidelines for the design of cultural goods are limited to the characters of the twelve horary signs. For this study concept and classification of cultural goods, Korean traditional formative special qualities, concepts and composite elements, symbolic meanings and special qualities, personifications, and unique images of twelve horary signs of are researched. According to the results of the research guidelines for the design of cultural goods, images of cultural goods, classifications applying to each subject, the formative special qualities of Korean traditions, personifications, and concepts on the development of cultural goods are presented..

A Study on the Formative Characteristics of Character Design : Focusing on Body Proportion (캐릭터 디자인의 조형적 특성에 관한 연구 -신체비례를 중심으로-)

  • The characters that could be connected to diverse cultural contents have formed diverse platforms with the development of digital technology, and the size of the relevant industry and market is rapidly growing. Recently, the utilization of character emoticons for smartphone messenger has been rapidly increased, so that the characters are settled down as a tool for non-verbal communication, on top of drawing attention as an independent area. With the expansion of character market, the importance of design that could give interest and familiarity to consumers is more emphasized. The body proportion of characters includes the implicative and symbolic meanings that could express diverse personalities. Thus, this study examined the body proportion of the characters with the high consumers' preference, and then analyzed the characteristics of formative elements of character design in accordance with the body proportion. In the results of the analysis, the exaggerated form of SD characters in two or three-head figure, and the realistic Real characters in seven or eight-head figure were preferred. For the SD characters, the colors with a high chroma showing the cute and cheerful image were used. For the Real characters, the cubic effect was expressed through the colors with active images and the light and shade of color. Even though the SD characters have limited motions due to the omitted body parts, the facial movements of animation characters are exaggerated while the Real characters describe the realistic and dynamic motions.

  • 본 논문은 한 중 일 3개국에 널리 알려져 있는 고전문학<삼국지> 소재로 제작된 만화에 나타나는 캐릭터비교 연구이다. 캐릭터는 언어적 의미를 시각화해서 전달하는 감성적이고 효과적인 표현 전달 방법이다. 또한 만화 캐릭터는 시각적인 조형으로 만화속의 스토리를 이어나가는 핵심적인 요소이며, 고전 문학을 원형으로 하는 캐릭터는 문화원형의 속성을 지니며 그 원형이 지니고 있는 문화적 특징도 시각화하여 커뮤니케이션 대상에게 재미와 정보를 제공해준다. 고전문학<삼국지>를 원형으로 제작된 만화에 등장하는 캐릭터디자인에 대한 비교를 통해 알 수 있는바 3개국 캐릭터디자인특징은 3개국 문화 속에서 원인을 찾아 볼 수 있고, 자국 문화콘텐츠에서부터 출발해, 주변 국가 문화콘텐츠의 영향과 더불어, 시대적 트렌드에 알맞은 디자인접근 방식을 보여주고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • Disney animation can be said to be part of American culture and art. With the changes in American society and culture, we can see the changes in the personality and social status of female characters in Disney animation. Especially in the Disney animation works published after 2000, many works showing equality in the social abilities and status of women and men have been published. In this study, the characteristics of female characters of the 20th century and the 21st century is compared and analyzed the characters of Elsa and Anna, who expressed the female image in a metaphorical way of 'Frozen 2'. And studied the characteristics and meanings of clothing and colorful shapes. This paper reveals the design elements needed to construct a gender-equality image of female characters, and hopes that it will become a useful research material for the animation industry and academia in the future.

  • The study is to explore the ways to design game characters according to the tendency of game users by classifying game users and analyzing the relation between user classes and their preferences towards game characters. The study examines various user classifications based on users' engagement levels, and designs a user questionnaire from them. Based on the result of questionnaire analysis, the study redefines user classes and applies the formal elements of character design to draw on the relationships between user classes and their preferences.

  • Customizing system is acting a main role for the character production system of MMORPG. However, since using the high degree of freedom in MMORPG, these characters are too individual and lack of awareness. We can describe each character's emotional characteristics and understand the correlation of characters more easily by adjusting design factors capable of cognitive decision to characters. Game character developer should consider seeking efficient character design process that is suitable to MMORPG game environment and users for proper character recognition and promoting character preferences. In addition, this research being extended on the article vol.13, no.3, "A Study on Cognitive and Preference of Games' Character" on Korean Society of Basic Design in June 2012 issue and this study is expected to have effectives as one method for the purpose of this research is to inquire and present what type of relation lies between recognition and preference of game characters of MMORPG.
