  • The purpose of this study was to confirm whether adolescents with a tendency to compare online game positions are unhappier than their peers who do not. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to compare the status of their game character with the game world average (below, equal, or above average), and were then measured on their changes in happiness (changes before and after the participant's status comparison). In Experiment 2, participants compared the status of their game character with a person they knew (whether it was lower or higher than their acquaintance), and were then measured on their subjective changes in happiness. In Experiment 3, participants were told that the status of their game character was lower/higher than the average, and were either presented or not presented with the information that their acquaintance's character held a lower/higher position. The subjective happiness level of the two groups was then measured. As a result, Experiment 1 confirmed that adolescents with generally low subjective happiness were unhappier when their game position was lower than the average and were happier when their game position was higher than the average. However, it was found that the happiness level of adolescents with generally high subjective happiness did not significantly change. Experiment 2 observed that adolescents with generally low subjective happiness were unhappier when their game position was lower than others in the game world and were happier when their game position was higher than others. However, this was not true for adolescents with generally high subjective happiness. Experiment 3 showed that adolescents with generally low subjective happiness were unhappier when someone else had a higher game position than themselves and were happier when someone else had a lower game position than themselves, regardless of their status in either situation. However, a significant change was not detected among adolescents with generally high subjective happiness. As a rare study confirming the effects of social status comparison on happiness in the virtual world, this study is noteworthy.

  • Auto-playing programs are often used in behalf of human players in MMORPG(Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game). By playing automatically and continuously, it helps to speed up the game character's level-up process. However, the auto-playing programs, either software or hardware, do harm to games servers in various ways including abuse of resources. In this paper, we propose a way of detecting the auto programs by analyzing the window event sequences produced by the game players. In our proposed method, the event sequences are transformed into a set of attributes, and the Decision Tree learning is applied to classify the data represented by the set of attribute values into human or auto player. The results from experiments with several MMORPG show that the Decision Tree learning with proposed method can identify the auto-playing programs with high accuracy.

  • This study was carried out to verify whether there were any differences in accepting moral issues between adolescents who played using characters of high status (either objectively or subjectively highly ranked within a game) in the online game world and those who played using characters of low status (either objectively or subjectively lowly ranked). It also investigated whether there were moderating interactional effects for the amount of time spent on playing games and the influence of adolescents' social statuses in games over accepting moral issues. Results showed that, overall, adolescents who played using a lower-ranking character in the game world displayed a higher acceptance of moral issues than those who played using characters of the two other categories (equal to average level or higher). Furthermore, interactional effects were observed for those who played using a low-ranking character and spent longer hours playing games, as they were more likely to accept moral issues. This study is significant in that it offers many implications, as a rare study that verified the effects of cyberspace status on moral judgements made in the real world.

  • Studies have found that people with higher social status pay little attention to other people's emotions and facial expressions. However, only a few studies have made similar observations on adolescents with high cyberspace social status. Therefore, this study sought to identify how adolescents with different online game character social statuses interpreted the smile emoticons in negative and positive situations, that is, did they perceive the emoticon to be positive (smile, encouragement, and consolation) or negative (derision, ridicule, and sarcasm). In Experiment 1, the participants were separated into three groups; those who had a lower than global average online game character status, those who had the same as the global average, and those who had higher than the global average. The participants were then asked to judge the meaning of the smile emoticon received in various positive or negative situations. In Experiment 2, the game character levels of the participants were set to be either higher or lower than the others' characters, and they were again asked to judge the meaning of the smile emoticon received in the positive or negative situations. In Experiment 3, the participants were separated into four groups; lower level than the average game character status (no information on the level of acquaintance's game character), lower than the average but higher than the character of the other, higher than the average status (no information on the other's character level), and higher than the average but lower than the character of the other, and asked to judge the meaning of the smile emoticon in positive or negative situations. It was found that when participants had a lower-level character compared to the average, had a lower-level character than the other, and had higher than the average but lower than the other's character, they interpreted the smile emoticon as derision, ridicule, or sarcasm. However, participants with higher level characters, higher than that of the other, and lower than the average but higher than the other interpreted the emoticon as a smile or consolation. This study was significant because it demonstrated the impact of an adolescent's social cyberspace status on their online communication.

  • The present study examined the scientific awareness appearing in Korean tokusatsu series by focusing on Vectorman: Warriors of the Earth. As a work representing Korean tokusatsu series, Vectorman: Warriors of the Earth achieved the greatest success among tokusatsu series. This work was released thanks to the continued popularity of Japanese tokusatsu since the mid-1980s and the trend of robot animations. Due to the chronic problems regarding Korean children's programs-the oversupply of imported programs and repeated reruns-the need for domestically produced children's programs has continued to come to the fore. However, as the popularity of Korean animation waned beginning in the mid-1990s, inevitably the burden fr producing animation increased. As a result, Vectorman: Warriors of the Earth was produced as a tokusatsu rather than an animation, and because this was a time when an environment for using special effects technology was being fostered in broadcasting stations, computer visual effects were actively used for the series. The response to the new domestically produced tokusatsu series Vectorman: Warriors of the Earth was explosive. The Vectorman series explained the abilities of cosmic beings by using specific scientific terms such as DNA synthesis, brain cell transformation, and special psychological control device instead of ambiguous words like the scientific technology of space. Although the series is unable to describe in detail about the process and cause, the way it defines technology using concrete terms rather than science fiction shows how scientific imagination is manifesting in specific forms in Korean society. Furthermore, the equal relationship between Vectorman and the aliens shows how the science of space, explained with the scientific terms of earth, is an expression of confidence regarding the advancement of Korean scientific technology which represents earth. However, the female characters fail to gain entry into the domain of science and are portrayed as unscientific beings, revealing limitations in terms of scientific awareness.
