  • The geology of the Capim region in Brazil is composed of Ipixua Formation in Mesozoic-Tertiary(Miocene), sedimentary rocks in Miocene, Barreiras Formation(sedimentary rocks) in Pleistocene and sediments in Holocene. Kaolin deposit consists of Barreiras Formation(average depth in 120m) composed of sandstone, clay, fine sand of Miocene to Pliocene age. Kaolin of the high grade is white in color and its thickness averages 7m. The orebody formed by kaolinite was confirmed by XRD, is shape of hexagonal, SK is above 33 degree. It is class A also suit for producing a paper without filtration. According to the CPRM report, the reservation of kaolin ore is amounts of 566,819,164 tons.

  • This study presents microstructural characteristics and strength properties of alkali-activated kaolin(K)-fly ash(FA) blends binders. The compressive strength, X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetric(TG) analysis and SEM/EDS were measured for hardened samples. The results were shown that all the samples had developed the compressive strength over time, regardless of replacement levels of K. It was found that when the amount of K increased, the strengths of samples decreased. In XRD result, no new crystalline phases were observed in all the hardened samples other than the crystalline components of raw FA and K, whereas TG analysis showed that N-A-S-H gel was formed as a reaction product in all the samples. Samples did not have the typical microstructure of dense, and there is little significant difference between the microstructures of the samples despite the differences in the strength testing results with replacement ratios of K. This study showed that the strength of sample was larger for lower Si/Al ratio of reaction product formed in sample. According to the correlation between Si/Al ratio and strength in this study, it is expected that if a chemical additive is used for lowering the Si/Al ratio of reaction product(i.e., increasing the $Al_2O_3$ solubility) in alkali-activated K-FA blends binders, strength improvement in K-FA blends binders could be achieved.

  • The objective of the present research is to evaluate the wave propagation velocity and attenuation characteristics of kaolin clay specimens using ultrasonic testing. Test specimens with known initial micro-fabric were prepared using a two-stage slurry consolidation technique. For a known state of stress conditions, initial void ratio, and micro-fabric, a series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the longitudinal wave propagation velocity and associated damping behavior. The effects of major variables involved in ultrasonic testing of cohesive soil were considered in this study. Ultrasonic velocity was not correlated to the microfabric structure under the given consolidated pressure whereas ultrasonic attenuation was affected by the microstructural properties of the specimen.

  • The permeation experiments were carried out to examine the separation characteristics of the modules which were piled up the disc-ring shape patterned membranes in this study. First of all, permeability of the pure water was measured for the self-made 5 shape disc filters, and varied from 0.25 to $2.24L/m^2{\cdot}hr{\cdot}bar$. The module showed the maximum pure water permeability was the maximum permeation flux, and the module showed the minimum pure water permeability was the minimum permeation flux for 0.1 wt% kaolin solution. However, all of the modules were not proportioned to the pure water permeability. Also, the backwashing was performed periodically for the module 1 in order to operate with 0.1 wt% kaolin solution for a long time. The most efficient operating condition was the 8 minute permeation and 2 minute backwashing cycle.

  • In this study, it is investigated the mechanical chemical properties of cement matrix using phosphogypsum and kaolin as a admixture for the substitutive materials to silica fume which is so expensive. For the test, phosphogypsum is modified as dihydrate, hemihydrate, type III anhydrite, and type II anhydrite, respectively and furnaced kaolin at $900^{\circ}C$ was also manufactured into meta kaolin by air cooling and water cooling method. The chemical characteristic and mechanical properties of various type of blended cements contained above mentioned gypsum and meta kaolin materials analyzed and compared with those characteristics of cement matrix with silica fume. From the test, the cement mixed meta kaolin made in water cooling has more excellent quality than other material.

  • In this study, fine structures of silica, titanium dioxide, talc and kaolin used in decorative cosmetics and the mixture extracted from BB cream cosmetics were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Kaolin had plate like shape structures of polygon with smooth surface and edge of kaolin had a relatively smooth appearance in comparison with talc. Also, thickness of each layer was estimated to about $0.1{\mu}M$ in the lump formed in stratum of several layers. Talc was observed by lumps shape phase of layering very thin flake. Boundary of thin flake was sharp or angular phase and thickness of flake was approximately 600 nm in diameter. When comparing the thickness of kaolin and talc, we was confirmed that kaolin was thicker than talc. Diameter of titanium dioxide was estimated to 0.2~0.3 ${\mu}M$ and surface of particle was a soft cubic form. Silica was confirmed that variety of size from 200 nm to $15{\mu}M$ of globular shape was measured. From the observation of inorganic pigments, silica was homogeneous dispersed in the BB cream cosmetics and among each other was filled with relatively small size like talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide and iron oxide. In conclusion, we suggest that silica at decorative cosmetics were formed in cosmetic coat at the skin as the minimum thickness.

  • The paper presented investigates the effects of kaolinite on strength properties of alkali-activated multi-component cement. The binders of this study was blended of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and kaolinite (KA). In this study, the specimens of combination of 20%~70% GGBFS, 10%~60% FA, 10% SF (constant ratio) and 10%~50% KA binder were used for strength properties tests. The water/binder ratio was 0.5. The binders (GGBFS + FA + SF + KA) was activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) was 10% by total binder weight (10% NaOH + 10% $Na_2SiO_3$). The research carried out is on the compressive strength, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compressive strength decreased as the contents of KA increase. One of the major reason for this is the low reactivity of KA compared with other raw materials used as precursors such as GGBFS or FA. The presence of remaining KA indicates that the initially used quantity has not fully reacted during hydration. Moreover, the results have indicated that increased of KA contents decreased UPV under all experimental conditions. The drying shrinkage and water absorption increased as the content of KA increase. Test result clearly showed that the strength development of multi-component blended cement were significantly dependent on the content of KA and GGBFS.

  • Aluminum sulfate, $AI_{2}(SO_4)_3\cdot18H_2O$ was prepared by adding of kaolin-dissolved sulphuric acid into ethanol and its thermal decomposition behavior was discussed. As-synthesized high purity precipitate particles were platelike shapes of $2\mu\textrm{m}$ size. With increasing drop rate of leach liquor into ethanol, the crystallite sizes of the precipitate decreased. The apparent activation energies for dehydration and sulfate decomposition of the precipitate were $11.9Kcal mol^{-1}$ and $48.2kcal mol^{-1}$ respectively.
