  • The purpose of the present study was to examine dental hygienists' perception of the current national practical examination. This research was performed using 199 self-reported surveys answered by professors of dental hygiene studies and clinical dental hygienist. Frequency analysis, chi-square tests, and analysis of variance were performed by using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 20.0. The results revealed that many of the respondents consider the current national practical examination to be neutral. They did not think that the current national practical examination questions are useful for assessing occupation-centric integrated clinical practice ability and counseling techniques for patient intervention. The professors of dental hygiene studies believed that among the research tasks required as mentioned in the national practical examination questions, dental polishing and tooth brushing education are of paramount importance, whereas clinical dental hygienists believed that ultrasonic scaling is the most important (p<0.05). Most of the professors of dental hygiene studies reported that they conducted skills education for dental polishing and tooth brushing education, while most of the clinical dental hygienists reported that tasks actually performed in the clinic included impression taking, model fabrication, ultrasonic scaling, and explaining treatment precautions (p<0.05). Therefore, these tasks can be effectively carried out with the improvement of the national dental hygienist practical examination.

  • The findings of the study illustrated that the college students felt more stress when they had to receive treatment for the sake of oral health, and that they experienced less stress when they took good care of their oral health for preventive purposes. A self-administered survey was conducted on 235 junior college students whose majors were unrelated to health in the region of Jeollanam-do from March 4 to 30, 2015. A total of 27.2% of the respondents had received dental caries treatment, and 48.1% had received periodontal treatment. When the stress of the college students about personality, appearance, families and interpersonal relationship was measured, they were most stressed out about their personality ($3.40{\pm}0.73$). Specifically, they scored highest in the item "It's such a hassle to do something" ($3.73{\pm}1.20$), and scored lowest in the item "I was concerned about someone else's problem" ($2.22{\pm}1.15$). The female students experienced more stress about their appearance, personality, families and interpersonal relationship than the male students. The male students felt more stress about their studies than the female students. The college students who had dental caries and periodontal diseases suffered stress that was above the average level, and the stress level of the group that had scaling experience and/or had received toothbrushing education, namely taking care of oral health for preventive purposes, was more below average than the other group that didn't. In a word, it's urgently required to take measures to prevent college students from having oral diseases, as the students who suffered from oral diseases and received treatment were more stressed out. The implementation and revitalization of systemized educational programs are required to help college students stay away from oral diseases to promote their oral health.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth color changes of resin bonding sites and their adjacent sites on orthodontic bracket bonding. Sixty extracted sound premolars were used and the tooth color was recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color system using a spectrophotometer. The tooth colors of the twenty premolars were measured and compared before bracket bonding and after removal. On a further twenty premolars, the tooth color was measured before and after only primer application. In the change of $L^*$ values, according to the bracket bonding and primer application, the lightness was decreased, and in the change of $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values, the color was changed into a more yellowish color The color differences $({\Delta}E^*)$ were calculated from the $L^*a^*b^*$ values and compared with the standard value of clinical detection $({\Delta}E^*=3.7)$. The color differences between before the bracket bonding and after removal noted exceeded the standard value and those of between before and after the primer application were not larger than the standard value. Toothbrushing was performed after application of the primer to evaluate the color changes according to the primer abrasion. As a control, toothbrushing was performed on the last twenty premolars. The color differences noted were larger than the standard value after toothbrushing. Also, to evaluate the color changes of the tooth which is exposed to sun irradiation after bracket removal, additional photoaging was performed and the color was measured for all teeth. The additional color differences after photoaging were smaller than the standard value. The above results suggest that the tooth color changes after fixed orthodontic treatment.

  • Of the many pathogenic Candida species, Candida albicans is the main fungal pathogen of humans. The oral environmental factors considered in the Candida albicans colony forming unit test contain both host and microbial factors associated with candidiasis. In particular, Candida biofilms can develop on surfaces of prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of oral Candida species between the type of prosthesis and the situation of oral environment in patient with prosthetic appliance. The patients were 30 elderly subjects with different types of prosthesis, 7 who wore denture, 12 who wore implant and 15 who wore removable orthodontic appliance. We used Candida albicans colony forming unit test using saliva to exam the distribution of Candida albicans related with 5 oral environmental factors, gender, smoking or nonsmoking, alcohol/nonalcohol consumption, the type of prosthetic appliance and its treatment duration as well as tooth brushing frequency per day. In conclusion, for the patient's gender, site in the oral cavity and the type of prosthetic appliance and its treatment duration was associated with an increase in the distribution of Candida albicans in saliva. The distribution of Candida albicans within the oral cavity performs to be modulated to varying extents by oral environmental factors and, further investigations are required to elucidate these complex interactions.
