  • This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing toothbrushing behaviors of elementary school students by adding the variable of 'self-efficacy' to the behavioral model based on the theory of planned behavior. To collect the data for an analysis, the self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 443 students in 4th to 6th grades of elementary school placed in Inchon Metropolitan City. The statistical package of PASW 18.0 was employed for the analysis. Results of the analysis revealed that the toothbrushing intention was explained by the subjective norm (${\beta}=0.343$), the self-efficacy (${\beta}=0.171$), the perceived behavioral control (${\beta}=0.163$), and the attitude toward the tooth-brushing behavior (${\beta}=0.135$). The toothbrushing behavior was explained by the toothbrushing intention (${\beta}=0.355$) and the self-efficacy (${\beta}=0.113$). The synthesis of such results suggested that both parents and teachers in school who would be influential to students should guide elementary school students to be habituated to the right toothbrushing. Also it was estimated that the students should understand the importance of toothbrushing through proper oral health education, and they should also become confident in spontaneous toothbrushing by providing them with an environment that could help them practicing the toothbrushing easily.

  • This study analyzed the tooth brushing behavior and oral health status of foreigner immigrant workers and obtained the following results. Statistical significance based on different general characteristics. Gender, educational background, period of stay, health insurance, medical expense coverage, and whether or not one has friends or regular gatherings were significant traits for frequency, while age, marital status, income, and health insurance were traits for part (p<0.05). Statistical significance (p<0.05) was found in marital status and health insurance for time used to brush teeth, period of stay and whether or not one attends a regular gathering for tooth brushing training, and gender, educational background, period of stay, roommate status, medical expense coverage, and whether or not one attends a regular gathering for supplemental oral product usage. The averages of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) for general characteristics were 6.98 and 3.03 respectively, and gender, roommate status, income, health insurance for DMFT index, and gender, age, marital status, educational background, roommate status, income, health insurance for CPITN were statistically significant (p<0.05). Tooth brushing frequency and part showed statistical significance (p<0.05) for DMFT index based on tooth brushing behavior, while tooth brushing part and time used to brush teeth were significant for CPITN. DMFT index was high at 8.34 for '3 times or more' in tooth brushing frequency, while DMFT index was high at 7.91 and CPITN was low at 2.94 for tooth brushing part. '3 minutes or longer' in time used to brush teeth was the lowest in CPITN at 2.88. As a result of analyzing the correlation between tooth brushing behavior and DMFT index, CPITN, tooth brushing frequency and part in DMFT index, and tooth brushing part and time used to brush teeth in CPITN showed significance (p<0.05). Based on the above results, we must promote the significance of brushing teeth and implement continuous training for correct tooth brushing management to enhance the oral health of foreign immigrant workers.

  • This study was conducted to examine O'leary index, patient hygiene performance (PHP) index, and toothbrushing practice assessment in subjects of college students in 20s who had been randomly selected. The purpose of this study is to examine if it is easy for rolling method which is recommended by many dental professionals in Korea to implement and to effectively remove dental plaque. Also, the correlations between dental plaque index and toothbrushing practice assessment with the course of time was confirmed, after instruction session on toothbrushing was provided. STATA 11.0 (StataCorp) was used for analysis. There was no significant difference on the three ways of O'leary index, PHP index, and toothbrushing practice assessment in using rolling method, bass technique and toothpick method when comparing the average resulting from first to third instruction session on toothbrushing. O'leary index, PHP index, and toothbrushing practice assessment were inspected with Kruskal-Wallis test which is used for non-parametric statistics. They were checked three times: the first, before the toothbrushing instruction was given; the second, two weeks after the toothbrushing session was given; and the third, 4 weeks after the session. The results are as follows: O'leary index stood at the lowest in the first experiment but showed the highest in the second (p=0.0001). PHP index was the highest level in the first trial and decreased in the second time, but increased again in the last examination (p=0.0001). Toothbrushing practice assessment also showed a similar tendency with PHP index (p=0.0001). In conclusion, rolling method is not the best option for everyone, and it is thought that more various toothbrushing ways need to be reviewed and recommended to people. Also, institutional framework is required for the continuous education on toothbrushing to be in place as the effectiveness of the education is decreased with time.
