  • Objective : This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Acupuncture, Bee Venom Acupuncture (BVA) and Bee Venom Herbal Acupuncture (BVHA) on post-stroke hemiplegic shoulder pain. Methods : 30 patients were randomly allocated into Acupuncture group, BVA group and BVHA group and was monitored weekly for 4 weeks; initial($T_0$), 1 week($T_1$), 2 weeks($T_2$), 3 weeks($T_3$) and 4 weeks($T_4$). Results : Visual analogue scale of shoulder pain showed significant decrease in BVA and BVHA groups compared to the Acupuncture group at T4 evaluation. Painless passive ROM of shoulder external rotation and Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment of Upper Limb motor function showed significant increase in all groups. Modified Ashworth scale of the spasticity of upper limb showed no differences between the three groups. Conclusion : BVA & BVHA appears to be an effective in treating post-stroke hemiplegic shoulder pain. Further clinical studies must be done to obtain more concrete findings.

  • Objective : This study was designed to find out the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture on low back pain with or without sciatica showing high intensity zone of magnetic resonance imaging. Methods : The 30 patients who had a diagnosis of high intensity zone by lumbar-MRI and admitted to Gwangju oriental medical hospital in wonkwang university from January 2005 to August 2004 were observed. The symptom of inpatients is low back pain with or without sciatica. We treated 30 patients by scolopendrid aquacupuncture besides the general conservative treatment of oriental medicine. Results and Conclusion : The scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment led to improvement in the pain and symptom of disability as determined by all efficacy measures. After scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, there was improvement in VAS, ROM and SLRT. This results suggest that scolopendrid aquacupuncture is good method for treatment of low back pain with or without sciatica showing high intensity zone of magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods : 40 carpal tunnel syndrome patients who visited Won-kwang University Hospital during the period from January 1998 to December 2004 were analysed for clinical manifestations. After we divided patients into two classes at random, we treated them with scolopendrid herbal acupucture or not. Treatment efficiency was monitored through VAS(Visual Analog Scale) and clinical symptom. Conclusion : We brought to the conclusion that the scolopendrid herbal acupucture has possibility to be efficient to cure the carpal tunnel syndrome patients. So we suggest the possibility to use this new remedy for the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Methods: Three patients diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis were treated with acupotomy. Two were male and one was female. The improvement of symptom were evaluated by visual analog scale (VAS) and self-consciousness symptoms of Cozen test. Results: After one treatments, patient's chief complaint and the pain near the lateral epicondyle while cozen test were notably improved. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that oriental medical treatment with acuputomy therapy has significant effect in improving symptoms of lateral epicondylitis. As though we had not wide experienced in this treatment, more research is needed.

  • Objectives: To discuss the application of the acupuncture therapy for the HIV-associated distal sensory neuropathy. Methods: We searched papers using KTKP, Oasis, CNKI, PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, J-STAGE, and CiNii with the keywords "HIV", "Peripheral neuropathy" and "acupuncture". The search range included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and clinical case series. Reviews and animal experiments were not included. Not matched with inclusion criteria were excluded. Results: A total 675 studies were found. 670 were excluded by scanning titles and abstracts and finally 5 articles were selected. One of the five articles noted that acupuncture was not effective in HIV-SN, but two articles reanalyzing the former, pointed out the statistical errors and noted acupuncture significantly reduced pain, attrition and mortality. Other RCT and the other case series concluded acupuncture had a beneficial effect in HIV-SN. Conclusions: Acupuncture seems to be effective to improve HIV-SN symptoms, however further large-scale RCTs are warranted.

They were treated with acupuncture therapy twice or three times a week. Symptoms score, number of dry eye symptoms, Ocular surface disease index were compared between eyes before and after treatment to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture therapy. Results : After 24 times treatment, symptom score, number of dry eye symptoms, Ocular surface disease index were significantly decreased. Conclusions : Acupuncture therapy was effective to improve symptoms of dry eye syndrome patients. There should be more observation about patients with dry eye syndrome and further study will be needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how much acupuncture treatment and autogenic training can affect to physical, mental relaxation through neurofeedback(Alpha/Theta training). I measured the numerical value of Alpha/H-Beta on the patient with facial tremor due to anxiety during acupuncture treatment and autogenic training, and when that patient wasn't relaxed I gave her feedback. The result shows that autogenic training is always more effective than aucupuncture in making the patient relaxed. On this case, the symptom was not much improved after having the treatments 10 times, but the frequency and intensity of the tremor decresed little. In according to the number of treatments, relaxtion didn't ascend regularly. I think it depends on the patient's condition or surroundings. I am unsatisfied I had only one case in this study and the number of treatments wasn't enough. In the future, much more clinical and statistical studies on herbal, musical, aroma therapies should be needed.

  • Tremor is a rhythmic, involuntary muscular contraction characterized by oscillations(to-and-fro movements) of a part of the body. The most common of all involuntary movements, tremor can affect various body parts such as the hands, head, facial structures, vocal cords, trunk, and legs; most tremors, however, occur in the hands. Tremor often accompanies neurological disorders associated with aging. Although the disorder is not life-threatening, it can be responsible for functional disability and social embarrassment. The clinical study was carried out the 4 patients with tremor who were treated in Dong Seo Medical Center from 1 January 2005 to 31 August. The results were summarized as follows. Tremor has relation to liver according to Jangbu theory. So we performed acupuncture treatment(Ganseonggyeok) and Herbal medication on tremor. After our treatments, tremor and some other symptoms were improved.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate recent clinical studies on effect of acupuncture for rhinitis in other countries. We have analyzed the studies on effect of acupuncture for rhinitis within randomized controlled trial(RCT), reviewed for 11 years (from 2001 to 2011). Methods The search database includes PubMed. To narrow the search, the following key search terms were used: 'rhinitis, acupuncture'. The search was limited to the publication date from 2001 to 2011. Results Total 20 studies were selected: RCT(13), review(5), case report(1), and cost effectiveness study(1). In RCT, 9 studies used acupuncture only, and 8 studies of them have revealed that acupuncture is effective on rhinitis. In review, 3 studies are systematic review, 2 studies are no systematic review. Among systematic review, 2 studies have revealed partial effectiveness of acupuncture for rhinitis, but they suggested the necessity of further studies. Conclusions Domestic studies on effect of acupuncture for rhinitis are necessary. For more accurate results, controlled, large scale and well designed studies are recommended.
