Predicting the settlement of soft ground is an important aspect of soft ground design. In this study, a method is proposed that increases the reliability of settlement predictions based on-site investigation data, including piezocone penetration test results, at the Gimhae-Jinyoung district, adjacent area to the Nakdong River. Soils in the area waweres classified using the Robertson Chart (1986, 1990), and theoretical settlement was calculated using the equations proposed by Terzaghi (1925) and Sanglerat (1972). SPSS was used to obtain the correlation between theoretical and measured settlements. Results produced settlement prediction errors for the Terzaghi and Sanglerat methods of 17.28% and 26.96%, respectively. A correction factor calculated by SPSS correlation analysis for the relation between and theoretical and measured settlements is proposed that improves the reliability of settlement prediction in soils of the classification examined.
In this study, a new formula of settlement at the head of IGM was suggested and the applicability of suggested formula was verified with field test results. This suggested formula was the function of the settlement at the shaft head and the elastic compression of shaft. The applicability of suggested formula was verified with the result of in-situ load test. Also, the bearing capacity of drilled shaft with the IGM's theory was compared with those of classical theories. The results showed that classical method showed smaller values of bearing capacity than those of field load test data. The results of analysis also showed that the suggested formula and IGM's theory were applicable for the estimation of bearing capacity with the increase of shaft settlement. Especially, settlement correction factor($k_m$), which reflects ground condition and load transfer characteristics, increases as the applying load and shaft deformation increase. This suggested formula was applicable for medium density or higher density of soil condition and $k_m=1$ means yielding load for firm soil condition.
The influence of tunnelling on buildings has become an important issue in urban areas. The problem is an interactive one: not only do tunnelling settlements affect existing structures, but existing structures affect tunnel-induced soil movements. In order to examine the constraint of surface settlement and the degradation of building damage parameters, 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are peformed. Also, in this paper, the results of the parametric studies for the variations of the damage parameters due to the ground movements are presented by utilizing 2-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models, totally 162 models. The width of a structure, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel and the depth of tunnel are considered. The interaction is shown by reference to commonly-used building damage parameters, namely angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements and horizontal strain. By introducing relative stiffness parameters which combine the bending and axial stiffness of the structure with its width and stiffness of soil, design curves are established. These give a guide as to the likely modification of the greenfield settlement trough caused by a surface structure. They can be used to give initial estimates of likely building damage.
The conventional settlement prediction method is not appropriate to model landfill settlement because it is very complex phenomenon. Biodegradation needs to be considered for long-term settlement since landfills are comprised of various organic materials and soils. As organic materials are decomposed, they directly influences on settlement producing LFG(Landfill Gas). Therefore, mathematical settlement prediction model is proposed based on the generated gas volume. As one of stabilization methods, leachate recycling system is adopted to model tests. Two model tests; one is leachate recycled, the other is non-recycled, are componented with proposed model and analysed regarding gas generation and settlement. The proposed mathematical model requires correction coefficients of 1.4 and 1.7 for non-recycled model and recycled, respectively. The recycled model showed 22% increase of long-term settlement more than the non-recycled model.
It is very important to predict the amount of settlement in order to maintain the function of the coastal structure. Finite element analysis methods and real and model experiments are used as methods for this, but this has the disadvantage of requiring a lot of cost and time. Therefore, this study was conducted for the purpose of a simple formula proposal that can easily predict the amount of settlement of the caisson-type quay wall structure. In the research process, after calculating the PSI (Power Spectrum Intensity) of the velocity, the amount of settlement of the structure is calculated by substituting it into the simple formula of the existing gravity breakwater. By comparing and analyzing the amount of settlement of the structure obtained through numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the error between the amount of settlement of the existing simple formula and the amount of settlement of the numerical analysis was large, and it was confirmed that the background could not be considered in the case of the existing simple formula. Therefore, this study proposed a correction factor for the background of the quay wall structure, indicating a simple formula that can obtain the amount of settlement of the caisson-type quay wall structure. Compared to the numerical analysis settlement amount, it was judged that this simple formula had sufficient precision in calculating the caisson-type quay wall settlement amount. In addition, facilities vulnerable to earthquake resistance can be easily extracted in situations where time and cost are insufficient, and it is expected to be used as a screening technique.
This study compares elastic moduli calculated using two stiffness testing methods with different strain ranges to evaluate the stress-settlement characteristics of foundation support layers. Elastic moduli were calculated by the soil stiffness gauge (SSG) in the micro-strain range and the plate load test (PLT) in the medium strain range. To apply the elastic moduli obtained by the two testing methods with different strain ranges to the design and construction of foundation soils, the correlation between each measurement value should be identified in advance. As a result of the comparative analysis of the elastic moduli calculated using the two methods in weathered soil and rock, which are representative support layers in Korea, the calculated elastic moduli differed depending on the types of soil and stress conditions. For various soil types, the static elastic modulus obtained by the PLT was reduced by 56% because of the difference in the strain level of the test compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained by the SSG. Therefore, the results show that it is necessary to apply corrections to the stress distribution, stress level, and dynamic effect according to the ground stiffness to effectively use the SSG instead of the PLT.

The calibration of resistance factor in reliability theory for limit state design of gravel compaction piles (GCP) requires a reliable estimate of ultimate bearing capacity. The static load test is commonly used in geotechnical engineering practice to predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Many graphical methods are specified in the design standard to define the ultimate bearing capacity based on the load-settlement curve. However, it has some disadvantages to ensure reliability to obtain an uniform ultimate load depend on engineering judgement. In this study, a well-fitting nonlinear regression model is proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity, for which a nonlinear regression analysis is applied to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of GCP and the results are compared with those calculated using previous graphical method. Affect the resistance factor of the estimate method were analyzed. To provide a database in the development of limit state design, the load test conditions for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity from static load test are examined.
In this study, mixed recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) was produced by mixing RCA from waste concrete in order to evaluate a new method of RCA production. Bond strength between reinforcing bars and RCA concrete was qualitatively evaluated as a part of continuous studies to establish design code of reinforced concrete structural members using recycled aggregate. For practical application, specimens were manufactured with the ready mix RCA concrete. Parameters investigated include: concrete compressive strength (i.e 21, 27 and 40 MPa), replacement levels (i.e 0, 30, 60 and 100%), bar position (i.e vertical and horizontal) and bar location (75 and 225 mm). For the pull-out test, each specimen was in the form of a cube, with each side of 150 mm in length and a deformed bar, 16 mm in diameter, was embedded in the center of each specimen. From the test results, the most of HT type specimen with compressive strength of 21 and 27 MPa showed lower bond strength than the ones provided in CEB-FIP and considered in reinforcement location factor ($\alpha\;=\;1.3$). It was reasoned that bonded area of top bar specimen was reduced at the soffit of reinforcement because of bleed water of fresh concrete. Therefore the reinforcement location factor in current KCI design code should be reviewed and modified.
