To understand the long-term leach behavior of a borosilicate waste glass in a repository, the leaching experiment with three kinds of simulated borosilicate waste glasses has been carried out since the middle of 1997. The five years results indicate that a boron would be applied as an indicator of a long-term leaching of their borosilicate waste glasses and that their long-term leach rates have a tendency to be close to about $0.03g/m^2-day$ even though their compositions and their ratios of the surface area to the volume of leachate are different.

The leaching behaviors of copper from chalcopyrite were investigated by sulfuric acid. The leaching of copper was examined according to concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature and addition of hydrogen peroxide and ethylene glycol. The concentrations sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide in the leaching solution were increased, the leaching efficiencies of Cu were increased. At $30 -60^{\circ}C$, the leaching efficiency of Cu was increased but it was decreased at $70 - 80^{\circ}C$. The results were due to the increasing of hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the solution above $70^{\circ}C$. In the case of ethylene glycol added at $80^{\circ}C$, the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was decreased and the leaching efficiency was increased. As a result of SEM analysis of leaching residue after leaching, the residue was found to porous form in the case of the ethylene glycol added and then the leaching efficiency of Cu was increased by the increase of surface area under $60^{\circ}C$ with ethylene glycol.

To identify the effect of engineered barriers on the leach rate of cesium from spent PWR fuel under a synthetic granitic groundwater, the related leach tests with and without bentonite or metals have been performed up to about 6 years. The leach rates were decreased as a function of leaching time and then became a constant after a certain period. The period in a bare spent fuel was much longer than that with bentonite or metal sheets. The cumulative fraction of cesium released from the spent fuel with bentonite or with copper and stainless steel sheets was steadily increased, but the fraction from bare fuel was rapidly and then sluggishly increased. However, the values deducted its gap inventory from the cumulative fraction of cesium released from the bare fuel was almost very close to the others. These suggest that the initial release of cesium from bare fuel might be dependant on its gap inventory and the effect of engineered barriers on the long-term leach rate of cesium would be insignificant but the rate with engineered barriers could be reduced in the initial transient period due to their retardation effect. And the long-term leach rate of cesium from spent fuel in a repository would be approached to a constant rate of $2\times10^{-2}g/m^2-day$.
In this study, the leaching behavior of vanadium (V) was investigated through CaO roasting and sulfuric acid leaching from domestic V-bearing titanomagnetite (VTM). Changes in the phase according to the amount of CaO added and roasting temperature were analyzed. Regardless of the roasting conditions, perovskite (CaTiO3) was preferred to form. When the CaO content was increased, the calcium ferrite (CaFeOx) phase was formed; otherwise, ferrite (Fe2O3) was preferred. After CaO was roasted, leaching was performed for 6 h with 1M sulfuric acid at 50℃ and a 10% solid-liquid ratio. Results of leaching revealed that when the roasted product was sintered, V was not sufficiently oxidized, and the leaching efficiency decreased. In addition, when the roasting temperature was low, the leaching efficiency of V decreased due to the influence of unreacted excess CaO. To lower the leaching efficiency of iron and titanium in VTM concentrates, suppressing the formation of CaTiO3 and CaFeOx was necessary by minimizing the amount of CaO added. Consequently, a leaching efficiency of 86% V, 4.3% Fe, and 6.5% Ti was obtained when the roasted product of 1150℃ and 10 wt% CaO was leached.

In this paper, the sensitivity of the leachate level is analyzed using the program HELP to reduce the high leachate level on the landfill. Hydraulic parameters analyzed were porosity, field capacity, wilting point and initial water content of cover soil and waste. Also, the influence of the difference between the initial water content and the field capacity on the leachate level in the landfill was analyzed. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the increase of the porosity and the wilting point decreases the leachate level, while the increase of the field capacity and the hydraulic conductivity increases the leachate level. Major parameters to the change of the leachate level were the hydraulic conductivity in the case of cover soil and the porosity, the field capacity and the initial water content in the case of waste.
The spent petroleum catalysts contain rare metals such as vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, and cobalt. Therefore, the leaching of these rare metals from spent petroleum catalysts by organic acid was investigated in the present study. The leaching efficiency of metals by organic acid was in the following order: oxalic acid > tartaric acid > citric acid > maleic acid > ascorbic acid. Among the organic acids employed in this work, oxalic acid can be considered to be superior to the other acids in terms of metals leaching efficiency. The effect of several leaching conditions such as temperature, acid concentration, pulp density, stirring speed, and reaction time on the leaching of metals was investigated. Vanadium and molybdenum were selectively dissolved by oxalic acid from the spent catalysts. The leaching kinetics of vanadium by oxalic acid was also investigated. An activation energy of 8.76 kJ/mol indicated that the leaching kinetics of vanadium by oxalic acid solution was controlled by mass transfer.

The present paper investigates the leaching property of coal fly ash (FA) using distilled water as solvent and its performance of mineral carbonation. The highest leaching efficiency is obtained at 100 min after leaching begins and the overall leaching efficiencies of Ca and Na via five consecutive leachings were calculated to be 25.37% and 7.40%, respectively. In addition, because $Ca(OH)_2$ produced during the leaching reacts with $SiO_2$ which is the major component of FA, the Pozzolanic reaction may occur and thus reduces leaching efficiency. Total carbonation capacity of FA by absorbing $CO_2$ into FA leachates is 6.08 mg $CO_2/g$ FA and the contribution of alkali substances such as Ca, Na, Mg and K to this value is calculated to be 5.19 mg $CO_2/g$ FA. Carbonation efficiencies of Ca and Na based on leachates are 85.62% and 77.70%, respectively. On the other hand, the ratios of Ca and Na in raw FA to participate in carbonation are calculated to be 9.04% and 5.26%, respectively.

Cobalt is abundant only in some countries including Democratic Republic of the Congo. It would be necessary to secure overseas Co ores and Co extraction technology. Two kinds of matte varying the sulfur content were manufactured by smelting reduction of Co concentrate containing ~8 wt% Co, ~19 wt% Cu, and ~3 wt% Fe. The amount of Co, Cu and Fe was concentrated to 19~21 wt%, 39~41 wt%, and 7~9 wt% respectively in the resulting matte. High-pressure leaching of matte was performed in an autoclave with considering the effect of oxidizing agent, $H_2SO_4$ concentration as a lixiviant, and the amount of sulfur added to the matte. An oxidizing agent (oxygen) is necessary to improve Co leaching efficiency enabling usage of a dilute $H_2SO_4$ leaching agent. An increase in $H_2SO_4$ concentration prevents selective leaching of Co, and the sulfur content in matte has a minor influence on the Co leaching efficiency.
Critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt and lithium, are known as materials for cathodic active materials of lithium ion batteries. The consumption of the minerals is expected to grow with increasing the demands of electric vehicles, resulting from carbon neutrality. Especially, the demand for LIB (lithium ion battery) recycling is expected to increase to meet the supply of nickel, cobalt and lithium for LIB. The recycling of EOL (end-of-life) LIB can be achieved by leaching EOL LIB using inorganic acid such as HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4, which are regarded as hazardous materials. In the present study, the potential use of MSA (Methanesulfonic acid), as an alternative lixiviant replacing sulfuric acid was investigated. In addition, leaching behaviors of NCM black mass leaching with MSA was also investigated by studying various leaching factors such as chemical concentration, leaching time, pulp density (P/D) and temperatures. The leaching efficiency of nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), lithium (Li), and manganese (Mn) from LIB was enhanced by increasing concentration of lixiviant and reductant, leaching time and temperature. The maximum leaching of the metals was above 99% at 80℃. In addition, MSA can replace sulfuric acid to recover Ni, Co, Li, Mn from NCM black mass.
