  • In this study, the evaluation method of diffusion characteristics of Suspended Soli&SS) and the generation limit(source and thick) are investigated, which is significantly affecting on marine examined by construction works such as dredging and reclamation. Dispersion characteristics of SS is examined by hydraulic tests and numerical works in consideration with the Pusan Port. Hydraulic model test was performed in 2-D wave flume to find the limit wave conditon of re-suspension of solid as well as the time dependent characteristics of settlement The results obtainded in the study are as follows; 1) The quantituative evaluation af SS is the basic parameter of marine environmental impact assessment in related with the port development The SS increases as the water content of sea bed solid increases and the density decreases. 2) The sea bed solid in Sinsundai area, Pusan Port has the water content range of 83~157% 3) The ratio of suspension velocity against settlement velocity is about 0.25 and SS concentration converges as the wave heigh. 4) The SS increases 2 time when time step increases 3 time(10 sec to 30 sec) in numerical simulation It means that the effect of the time step should be checked in detail to stable. The diffusion The diffusion coefficient are Affiected senstively in the dispersion process while sea ved friction coefficinet have not strong relation in the simulated area

  • Formation behavior of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate was investigated with changed the concentration of $Na_2CO_3$ solution and addition method which added in the $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry at $75^{\circ}C$. In this reaction, we found that $Na^+$ ions were substituted into $Ca^{2+}$ion site then disturb the growth of calcite, and while proceed the crystal growth in a certain direction and promote the formation of aragonite. Also, a decrease of reaction rate by control the concentration of $CO_3^{2-}$ ion, induce the homogeneous precipitate reaction and increase substitution ability of $Na^+$ ions, consequently it was promote the formation and growth of aragonite.

  • Phosphogypsum is a by-product resulting from the phosphoric acid process for manufacturing fertilizers. It consists mainly of $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ and contains some impurities such as $P_2O_5$, $F^-$, and organic substances. Recycling research of phosphogypsum is very limited to a field of study, especially, civil engineering. This study describes an application of phosphogypsum as dredged materials. For this purpose, experiments are performed to evaluate the physicochemical properties and environmental characteristics of dredged clay with phosphogypsum ; sedimentation test, pH, and leaching test. The result of this study are as follows : the settling velocity is increased due to the activity of phosphogypsum. And leaching and radioactive test results are far below than those of regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Therefore phosphogypsum can be used as dredged materials in reclamation.

  • A centrifuge works on the principle that particles with different densities will separate at a rate proportional to the centrifugal force during high-speed rotation. Dense particles are quickly precipitated, and particles with relatively smaller densities are precipitated more slowly. A decanter-type centrifuge is used to remove, concentrate, and dehydrate sludge in a water treatment process. This is a core technology for measuring the sludge conveyance efficiency improvement. In this study, a smoothed particle hydro-dynamic analysis was performed for a decanter centrifuge used to convey sludge to evaluate the efficiency improvement. This analysis was applied to both the original centrifugal model and the design change model, which was a ball-plate rail model, to evaluate the sludge transfer efficiency.

  • This study attempted to utilize ultrafine precipitated calcium carbonate for fluoride removal from the wastewater of electronics industries. An average particle size of the calcium carbonate was $0.96{\mu}m$, and pH of the aqueous slurry was 10 with 70% in mass. The suspension solution showed approximately 2 mL/hr of the sedimentation rate. The present calcium carbonate solution could be comparable to the conventional aqueous calcium source, $Ca(OH)_2$, for the neutralization and removal of fluoride ions. Depending on the amount of an additional alkali source, less amounts of test Ca-source slurries were required to reach the solution pH of 7.0 than that of using the aqueous calcium hydroxide. It was also found from XRD analysis that more calcium fluoride precipitates were formed by the addition of calcium carbonate solution rather than that of calcium hydroxide. In addition, Minteq equilibrium modelling estimated various ion complexes of fluoride and calcium in this process.

  • The sediment of Shihwa Lake contains an abundant quantity of cohesive sediments. The transport processes of the cohesive sediments are complex and difficult to predict, quantitatively. The cohesive sediments are the primary reason for the pollution of the environment and water quality in the coastal region. In this study, a column test has been performed. In order to quantify the settling velocities of sediment from Shihwa Lake, an experiment was conducted using a specially designed 1.8m tall settling column. A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Shihwa Lake cohesive sediments has been conducted to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties, which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage oj organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Shihwa Lake sediments are relatively large in average grain $size(74\mu m)$ contain very small organic $material(6\%)$, and are dominantly composed of Quarts, which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Shihwa Lake sediments might be specified as those whose settling properties are more influenced by gravity than cohesion. It is concluded that the magnitude of settling velocities of muddy sediments can be quite different, regionally, and it implies that field or laboratory experiments for settling velocity measurement should be preceded over the numerical modeling of muddy sediment transport, in order to obtain the reliable prediction results for a given specific site.

  • This study was carried out to investigate of aerobic granulation by using aerobic granular reactor. To make aerobic granular sludge in short period of time, we used polymer. In reactor, we have studied on physicochemical characteristics of particle size, density, and microbial secreting polymer depending on aerobic particle's formation. The results of running aerobic granular reactor with 3, 6, 9 $kg{\cdot}COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ of COD loading rate and 35 days reaction time showed that particle size were 3.6 mm, 4.3 mm, and 3.4 mm respectively. The settling velocities were 1.5 cm/s, 1.6 cm/s, and 1.2 cm/s respectively. The microbic growth rates were 0.12 $d^{-1}$, 0.135 $d^{-1}$, and 0.133 $d^{-1}$ respectively. The overall result of aerobic granular reactor showed that $6kg{\cdot}COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ of COD loading rate had optimal physicochemical characteristics.

  • Comprehensive laboratory experiments including digestion failures were conducted to identify differences between mesophilic and thermophilic digestion. Critical HRT was found to be near 10days for mesophilic and near 5days for thermophilic digestion. Inhibition occurred rapidly when operated below critical HRT. However, inhibition at mesophilic condition was much greater than that at thermophilic condition. Although digester performances were similar above critical HRT of mesophilic digestion, thermophilic digestion was considerably advantageous below this HRT. Thermophilic digestion produced smaller amount of sludges which had significantly higher settling velocity and lower specific resistance. Reaction rates also clearly demonstrated temperature and HRT effects on digestion. It was also found that gas production rates increased linearly with increasing reaction rates regardless of temperature and their relationships were almost identical at mesophilic and thermophilic temperature.

  • Study on Aeolian transport began in 1941 when Bagnold first conducted a study on aeolian transport in desert conditions. Aeolian transport study was mainly conducted on deserts, and the field of coastal engineering began with the application of Bagnold's equation to the coast after 1980. However, many studies have shown that using the Bagnold equation on the coast overestimates the amount of aeolian transport. Currently, aeolian trap using various sensors ranging from simple forms have been developed and are being used in study. However, these aeolian traps have the disadvantage that there is a large difference in performance for each trap. In addition, in the case of existing traps, analysis is performed only on the amount of sand collected, and quantitative analysis of sand transport velocity or concentration is difficult. Therefore, in this study, we use image analysis techniques to evaluate the accuracy of aeolian transport velocity measurement and suggest a method that can be used in the study.
