The purpose of this study was to investigate the variations of the skeletal and dentoalveolar dimensions in relation to vertical facial patterns. Lateral cephalogram of 200 cases (100 cases of male and 100 cases of female, average age of which was 23.2 years) were traced and some measurements of skeletal and dentoalveolar dimensions were measured. The ratio of UAFH/LAFH was employed to classify the samples into groups of excess and short lower anterior facial height. And the comparison between two groups were taken statistacally. The following results were obtained. 1. The dentoalveolar height, lower anterior facial height, lower genial angle, and FMA in the excess-lower-anterior-facial-height group were significantly larger than those in short-lower-anterior-facial-height group. 2. The dentoalveolar height, facial height, ramus height, and Jarabak ratio in the male subjects were significantly larger than those in the female subjects. 3. The UAFH/LAFH ratio showed a significant correlation to upper, lower facial height, AUDH, PUDH, ALDH, PLDH, Lower gonial angle, FMA, and $Bj\"{o}rk's$ Sum.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether different types of adhesive systems and enamel-protective agents will affect the tensile bond strength of lingual brackets. Methods: A total of 75 extracted mandibular incisors were randomly divided into 5 groups and lingual brackets were bonded. Group 1 specimens received Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), Group 2 required the application of a fluoride-releasing resin (Ortho-coat, Pulpdent, Watertown, MA, USA) with Transbond XT, Group 3 specimens received a chlorhexidine varnish (Cervitec Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Lichtenstein) with Transbond XT. In Group 4, a light-cured orthodontic adhesive (Aegis Ortho, Bosworth, Skokie, USA) was applied and in Group 5, an antimicrobial self-etching primer (Clearfil Protect Bond, Kuraray, Osaka, Japan) was used. Results: There were no significant differences in bond strength whether fluoride-releasing resin or chlorhexidine varnish were used or not. Group 5 had significantly higher bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) values than other groups (p < 0.001). The application of enamel-protective products did not have an adverse affect on the bond strength of lingual brackets. Conclusions: These products might provide benefits both for the patient and the clinician, by supporting the oral hygiene during lingual orthodontic treatment. The higher ARI score may be beneficial for Clearfil Protect Bond but its excessive bond strength should be considered in clinical practice, especially where the enamel is thin.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of growth hormone treatment (GHT) on craniofacial growth in children of short stature. Methods: Nineteen untreated children of short stature were referred from the Pediatric Department, Yeungnam University Hospital as a subject group. All subjects had lateral cephalograms taken before, after 1 year and after 2 years of growth hormone treatment. As a reference group, we selected 19 normal children with paired sampling who matched the subjects' age and sex, from the Department of Orthodontics, Kyungpook National University Hospital. Results: Before GHT, anterior cranial base length and upper posterior facial height, posterior total facial height, mandibular ramus length, and mandibular corpus length were significantly smaller in the reference group. In angular craniofacial measurements, saddle angle and mandibular plane angle were larger. SNA and SNB were smaller in the reference group. After two years of GHT, growth hormone accelerated growth in several craniofacial components. The posterior total facial height, the anterior, posterior cranial base length, and the mandibular ramus length were increased. And the difference in mandibular plane angle and ANB values compared with the reference group was decreased. Conclusions: GHT over 2 years leads to a craniofacial catch-up growth tendency, which is pronounced in interstitial cartilage and condylar cartilage.
This experiment was performed to explore the effect of electric currents and orthodontic forces on bone $PGE_2$ content and orthodontic tooth movement on cats. Stainless steel electrodes were connected a power pack consisting of five miniature batteries, a transistor, and a resistor. The current $(10{\pm}2{\mu}A)$ was provided by a constant source encased in a palatal acrylic plate. In first experiment, the cathode was placed mesial to the right maxillary canine tooth and the anode was positioned distal to the tooth, Sham electrodes were placed new the left cuspid, to serve as control. Nine cats were divided into three groups evenly. Groups of three animals were treated with electric currents only-for 1, 3 and 7 days, respectively. In second experiment, electric currents and the orthodontic forces of about 80 gm were applied to the right maxillary canine, and the orthodontic forces only were applied to the left maxillary canine. 3 groups of three cats each were treated in this experiment-for 1, 3 and 7 days, respectively. Alveolar bone samples were obtained from sites of tension and compression as well as from contralateral sites. Bone samples were extracted by homogenization in $40\%$ ethanal. The supernatant partitioned twice with 2 volumes of petroleum ether to remove neutral lipids and the aqueous supernatant partitioned in ethyl acetate. After drying the solvent, $PGE_2$ was measured by radioimmunoassay technique. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Teeth treated with combined force and electricity moved faster than those treated with force alone. 2. Alveolar bone $PGE_2$ content of electric stimulation was increased at both electrodes. 3. Alveolar bone $PGE_2$ content of mechanical stimulation at compression sites was gradually increased at all time period. At tension site, $PGE_2$ content increased after 1 day of mechanical stimulation remained elevated at all time period. 4. Alveolar bone $PGE_2$ content of compression sites was increased more than that of tension sites from mechanical stimulation as well as electrical stimulation.
The physical properties of seven sizes of control groups and experimental group in stainless steel orthodontic wires were studied in tension, hardness, bending, torsion and observation of microstructure. The wires (0.40-0.90mm dia.) of round type were tested in the as-received condition. The wires of control groups were TRU-CHROME and REMANIUM, and experimental group was SK wire which was developed by ourselves and made in Korea. The results were as follows; 1. The chemical compositions of control groups and experimental group were austenite stainless steel wires of SOS 304. 2. Higher values of tensile and yield strength in tension were control group I, experimental group, control group II. Maximum tensile and yield strength of experimental group were $203.63{\pm}1.41kg/mm^2$ in 0.70mm diameter and $148.96{\pm}4.88kg/mm^2$ in 0.60mm diameter, and maximum elongation was $5.20{\pm}0.57%$ in 0.45mm diameter. 3. Hardness values of experimental group were similar to control groups. Maximum hardness values were $596.2{\pm}13.66Hv$ in 0.45mm diameter wire of control group I, $590.5{\pm}20.08Hv$ in 0.50mm diameter wire of control group II, and $563.6{\pm}5.35Hv$ in 0.70mm diameter wire of experimental group. 4. Torsion properties of experimental group were similar to control group I and more than control group II. Maximum torsion cycles were $31.8{\pm}2.48$ in 0.45mm diameter of control group I, $17.4{\pm}4.84$ in 0.60mm diameter of control group II, and $24.6{\pm}3.04$ in 0.45mm diameter of experimental group. 5. Maximum bending cycles of experimental group were smaller than control groups. Maximum bending cycles were $9.00{\pm}0.00$ in 0.50mm diameter wire of control group I, $10.0{\pm}0.82$ in 0.40mm diameter wire of control group II, and $8.0{\pm}1.26$ in 0.50mm diameter wire of experimental group. 6. Microstructures of experimental and control groups co-existed with martensited austenite structure and elongated austenite structure. 7. The direction of wire fracture was propagated parallel to torsion direction typically and there was no probability showing wire fracture at inclusions and surface scratches. 8. The type of wire fracture was brittle fracture at initiation site and ductile fracture at core.
This study was undertaken to investigate the activities of genioglossus and orbicularis oris muscle between normal occlusion and anterior open bite group. 39 subjects without the experience of orthodontic treatment and T.M.disorder were selected for this study. 20 subjects were normal occlusion. 19 subjects were anterior open bite. The twenty items were measured from the cephalometric headplates, and EMG recording of the genioglossus, orbicularis oris muscle were taken at rest position, water swallowing, jaw opening, isometric tongue protrusion, maximum tongue protrusion. All data were analyzed and processed with the computer statistical method. The following results were obtained: 1. Except at rest position. the muscle activities of genioglossus muscle in anterior open bite were higher than in normal occlusion with singificatn difference. 2. Except druing water swallowing, the muscle activities of orbicularis oris muscle in anterior open bite were higher than in normal occlusion with significant difference. 3. During maximum tongue protrusion, the geniolossus muscle of anterior open bite subjects showed the highest muscle activity. 4. Anterior open bite showed closer interrelationship between facial morphology ad the genioglossus, orbiculars oris muscle activities than that of nomral occlusion with significatn difference.
The purpose of this study was to obtain the lingual morphology(angulation, inclination, horizontal and vertical contour) and lingual arch form of Korean adult with normal occlusion in order to provide the basic datas for lingual brackets and ideal lingual archwire. Dental models of thirty person with normal occlusion(Male : 16, Female :14) were selected for this study. Crown angulation, inclination. horizontal and vertical contour of lingual surfaces from Lt. 1st molar to Rt 1st molar of both upper and lower arch were measured. Lingual arcform was studied from copied papers of dental models attached Fujita lingual bracket. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The average angulation and inclination of lingual surfaces of all tooth types for Korean adults with normal occlusion were obtained. 2. The average horizontal and vertical contour of lingual surfaces of all tooth types were obtained. 3. There were similar figures in horizontal and vertical contour of lingual surfaces between upper and lower molars, upper and lower premolars, upper and lower canines, upper central and lateral incisors and lower central and lateeral incisors respectively. It was possible that the use of those contour of bracket bases in common. 4. The average of lingual archform was provided, which was arch-shaped from canine to canine, linear along the premolars and molars with small offset bend between them, and where canines and premolars met, it was bent in a crank- shape. 3. There was no difference between lingual archform of male and that of female, although lingual archform of female was smaller than that of male in lower arch.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of soft tissue profile on lower face following retraction of incisors through orthodontic treatment. 31 Korean women with bialveolar protrusion who were treated with 4 first bicuspid extraction were selected. All of samples were treated from above 17 years of age. Lateral cephalometric head films taken before and after treatment were analyzed statistically. The results were obtained as follows. $\cdot$The ratio of upper incisor retraction to upper lip retraction and lower incisor retraction to lower lip retraction were 1.54:1 (r=0.746) and 0.92:1 (r=0.584) respectively $\cdot$It appeared during orthodontic treatment that UIS-LS was increased considerably and the others in soft tissue thickness measurements were slightly decresed. $\cdot$Analysis of correlation showed that the change of the upper lip (LS) with the change of maxillary central incisor (UIS) and the change of lower lip with the change of B point were most strongly correlated. $\cdot$The multiple regression equations were obtained to predict soft tissue profile change of lower face according to retraction of incisors.
Precise and accurate measuring of tooth size is essential procedure in orthodontic diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility and accuracy of tooth size measurements with regard to tooth and investigator. Five investigators measured the size of one side of teeth, from central incisor to first molar, on 20 sets of casts that show a moderate degree of crowding. Mesio-distal width was measured with digital vernier calipers in each tooth and this procedure was repeated three times at two weeks interval. To obtain a standard measurement for each tooth, dental casts were cut into individual tooth, and its width was measured with micrometer. The difference between the measurement from dental cast and the standard measurement was defined as the measurement error. Through various statistical analyses, following results were obtained. 1. The reproducibility did not show significant differences with regard to tooth or investigator. 2. The measurement error showed some difference with regard to tooth and investigator. 3. The magnitude of the measurement error showed increasing tendency from anterior to posterior teeth with maximum value in the first molar. 4. While the measurements obtained on study casts generally showed smaller number compared to standard measurements, the direction of the difference showed variability according to tooth or investigator. 5. The measurement errors did not show significant correlations with the degree of crowding. The results of the present study indicate that the possibility of tooth size measurement error should be taken into consideration when diagnosing an orthodontic case.
This study was undertaken to compare the bond strength and the fracture site of new and recycled brackets according to the base design. 252 sound premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment were collected and Type I, Type II, Type III brackets were divided into four groups by recycling method Each bracket was then bonded to an extracted premolar. Instron Universal Testing Machine(model W) was used to measure the shear bond strength, and the surface of the recycled brackets were viewed in SEM For the analysis of the results, one way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test was executed using the SPSSWIN program. 1. The shear bond strength showed statistically significant difference according to the bracket base design(p<0.001). Type III bracket(round indentation base, micro-etched) showed the highest bond strength, Type I bracket(foil-mesh base) was second, and Type II bracket(grooved integral base, micro-etched) was last. 2. The effect of recycling on the bond strength was different according to bracket type. The shear bond strength of Type I, Type II brackets showed the smallist reduction when treated for 1 minute in Big Jane(p<0.05), but the shear bond strength of Type III brackets showed no statistically significant difference according to recycling method(p>0.05). 3. In Type I, Type II brackets, frequent fracture site was bracket-resin interface, but in Type III brackets, about half of the resin was retained on the tooth surface frequently. 4. The shear bond strength was highest when about half of the resin was retained on the tooth surface(p<0.05). 5. The resin remnant on the bracket base after recycling had no effect on the shear bond strength.
