Correlation between quality of sleep and dental fear in implant surgery patients (치과 임플란트 수술 환자의 수면 질과 공포감의 관련성)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between quality of sleep and dental fear in implant surgery patients. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 153 implant patients from December 2012 to February 2013 in dental clinics and hospitals in Busan and Changwon. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis using SAS version 9.20. Results : The quality of sleep in the implant patients was $41.0{\pm}6.0$. The systemic diseases influenced on the quality of sleep and dental fear also affected the quality of sleep. Conclusions : The results of the analysis of a relationship between the fear perception of dental implant surgery patients and the quality of their sleep showed that the patients with systemic diseases, the patients with a fear by the physical stimulation relating to implant treatment showed the low quality of sleep.

Dental fear and oral health-related quality of life by mediating variable model(self-esteem & self-regulation) (치과치료 공포감과 구강건강 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 매개변수(자아존중감과 자기조절능력)에 대한 연구모형)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the dental fear, self-esteem, and self-regulation in oral health quality of life in the adolescents. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the 826 adolescents from March 5 to 16, 2012 in J city. Results : Higher self-esteem(${\beta}$=0.186) was closely related to higher oral health-related quality of life(p<0.001). Dental fear had indirectly influenced on self-esteem and self-regulation, and had significant differences(p<0.05). The model showed that dental fear and oral health-related quality of life were a suitable structural model due to higher fit indices. Conclusions : Self-esteem and self-regulation were the important variables to oral health-related quality of life. There was a close relationship between the dental fear and oral health-related quality of life.

Impact of dental fear on oral health related quality of life in teenagers (청소년들의 치과 공포감이 구강건강 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of dental fear on the oral health related quality of life in teenagers. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire by Likert 5 point scale was completed by 900 high school students in J area from March 10 to April 20, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, dental fear survey, and oral health related quality of life. Data were analyzed by t-test and One-way ANOVA using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Oral symptoms had no significant differences in mother's education and family economic status. Emotional well-being factors had no significant difference in age, religion, school performance, and family economic strength. Dental fear was closely related to emotional well-being, Oral symptoms, social stabilities, functional limit and mental stabilities. Explanation power of the model was 29.1%. Conclusions: It is very important to explain the dental fear procedure to teenagrers before dental surgery and this will enhance the oral health related quality of life in teenagers.

Association between Dental Fear and Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies and Dental Experience of Dental Patients (치과내원 환자의 불안취약사고 경향 및 치과경험과 치과공포의 관련성)

  • Introduction The aim of this study, personal trait and their dental care based on experience level of dental fear is to analyze the differences. Catastrophizing is an irrational belief that something is far worse than it actually is. Because it makes it possible to analyze patients' anxious thoughts and tendencies. Methods The Dental Fear Survey(DFS) and Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies(AT&T) were used as measuring tools, and the independent sample t-test and ANOVA were performed on the basis of the mean value of the summated scale scores and the standard deviation. On the factors to dental anxiety, the multiple regression analysis was performed. Results Demographically, the total DFS score was higher in women($25.73{\pm}8.27$) than in men. Also, AT&T was higher in women($31.01{\pm}7.05$) (p<0.05). Dental fear was intense in the group of patients who visited dental clinics only problems($25.29{\pm}8.57$) than in those regular visited($22.29{\pm}7.78$). In relation to dental experiences, the DFS score was significantly higher in children. In many cases, patients experienced therapeutic pains in children($26.40{\pm}9.54$) (p=0.004). Also in many patients, dental anxiety began to occur in adolescence(44.3%). The multiple regression analysis result, it was found that dental treatment pain and their AT&T wielded great influence upon dental fear.

Effect of Dental Treatment Fear and Distrust of Dentists with Dental Caries Experience among Middle and High School Students in Daegu City, Korea (일부 지역 중·고등학생들이 치과치료공포감 및 치과의사불신감이 치아우식증에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze factors impacting on the middle & high school students' dental treatment fear and distrust of dentists with dental caries experience to provide empirical data for the development of students oral health. The subjects of this study consists of 720 middle & high school students in Daegu area. The data were collected from July 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009 by self-administrative questionnaires. Among sub-scales of Dental Fear Survey(DFS), stimulate-response factor was the highest ($3.42{\pm}0.98$), and patient distrust toward dintist factor was the highest score($3.07{\pm}0.912$) among sub-scales of Dentist Distrust Survey(DDS). Mean score of DFS were DDS were higher in female than male student. The students who have higher DFS and DDS score, the also have high DMFT index. The higher DDS, the higher DFS, and it was statistically significant(p<0.001). The results suggest that oral health status of adolescent can improve diminishing dental fear and dentist distrust if patient-specific medical service may be provided.

  • 저자는 소아치과 환자의 일반적인 치료시 흔히 나타나는 과민성, 불협조, 공포감 등의 아동 취급상의 난점들을 심리적인 충격없이 해소함을 목적으로 Demerol, Phenergan과 Atarax들의 약제를 치료전에 준비투약 함으로써 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 일반 소아과에서 사용되는 약물용량보다 소아치과 외래환자에선 2배의 용량에서 만족스러운 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 2) 용량결정에 있어서 최초 투약용량을 정확히 산출함으로써 준비투약의 성공을 가져올 수 있었다. 3) 준비투약의 성공은 일정한 기간후 환자의 recall appointment시 준비투약 없이도 보다 나은 협조을 얻을 수 있었다. 4) Demerol, Phenergan, Atarax사용에 있어서 그 부작용은 거의 무시할 수 있을 정도로 경한 것이였으며 환자의 심리적인 지원을 갖어 올 수 있어 아동 취급상에 큰 효과를 얻을 수 있있다.

  • The aim of this study was to recognize guardians' desire and awareness on sedation, and to guide guardians' satisfaction and cooperation. Followings are the conclusion : 1. Information supply about conscious sedation were restrictive and insufficient. 2. Both first-visit guardians and guardians of sedated patients were interested in decrease of dental fear. 3. Both first-visit guardians and guardians of sedated patients were satisfied with psychological improvement better than behavior improvement. Therefore, decrease of patients'ear and anxiety was essential. 4. Both first-visit guardians and guardians of sedated patients didn't recognize accurate safety of conscious sedation.

Relationship between dental fear and subjective oral health-related quality of life (치과공포감과 주관적인 구강건강관련 삶의 질과의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between dental fear and subjective oral health-related quality of life. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 320 subjects in Seoul and Gyeonggido from June to August, 2014 after permission from Institutional Review Board (IRB). Except incomplete 9 copies, 311 data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 19.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of five questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, twelve questions of oral health related quality of life, eighteen questions of dental fear, and one question of awareness toward subjective health status. Results: The explanation power of subjective oral health-related quality of life on dental fear was 26.2 percent. As the subjective oral health-related quality of life increased by 1 point, the dental fear decreased at the rate of 0.645 (p<0.001). Conclusions: Higher subjective oral health-related quality of life will diminish the dental fear. Regular dental checkups and preventive treatment are very important to enhance the oral health-related quality of life in those who visit the dental clinic.

Relationship between Subjective Oral Health Recognition and Dental Fear in Dental Clinic Patients (치과내원환자의 주관적 구강건강인식과 치과공포의 관련성)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop basic data in improving quality of life along with the enhancement in oral health, by arranging a plan for being able to reduce dental fear given the dental treatment in the future by grasping the subjective oral health recognition & status, and the dental fear level of the dental treatment field targeting patients of visiting dental clinics in Busan and Gyeongnam area. In the whole items of DFS, a sense of fear was higher in women than men. A factor of avoiding dental treatment stood at 1.72 points in men and 2.10 points(p<0.001) in women. A factor of response to stimulation stood at 2.75 points in men and 3.20 points(p=0.001) in women. A fear level according to dental kind was high in a factor of avoiding implant treatment(p=0.015), a factor of avoiding orthodontic treatment(p=0.002), physiological reaction(p=0.009), a factor of avoiding prosthesis treatment(p=0.014), a factor of avoiding pulpectomy treatment(p=0.005), a factor of physiological reaction(p=0.017), a factor of avoiding periodontal therapy(p=0.013), a factor of physiological reaction(p=0.004), and a factor of avoiding treatment given not receiving regular checkup(p=0.027). In the above results, to reduce dental fear, there will be a need of developing diverse programs and oral health eduction for regular checkup and preventive treatment.

Related factors to dental fear of women university students (여대생의 치과진료 공포감 관련요인)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to the dental fear based on the general characteristics, major and personality type of the 400 girl students in university in Ulsan. Methods : Subjects were 400 girl students in university in Ulsan from November 2012 to March 2013. Data were collected by questionnaire and dental checkup and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 version. Results : Neuroticism was closely related to dental clinic visit. Those who did not visit dental clinics tended to have low score of neuroticism. Conclusions : To reduce dental fear in girl students, it is necessary to make them visit dental clinics frequently and promote the preventive dental care effectively.
