The study area which contains the coastal terrace of the southeastern part of Korean peninsula, well developed the lineaments which are NNE, NE and WNW directions. The area crops out Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and granite porphyry, Tertiary conglomerate, tuffite and basalt and Quarternary deposits. Coastal terraces are subdivided into low, middle and upper terraces(LT, MT, UT) based on the topographic levels. Terrace gravels are deposited on these wave-cut erosional surface during the initial lowering stage of sea level fluctuation. Terrace gravels are typified by granule to pebble layers with slightly inclined beddings. These gravels are interpreted as beach gravels belonging to berm or swash zone based on the present distribution of beach gravels. The Suryum fault is characterized by the thrust which is gradationally changing the strike from ENE to NNE. The extension of the fault is about 200m and Maximum displacement is about 1.5m.
Modern volcanoes, Laoheishan and Huoshaoshan, have erupted during $1720\~1721$ in the Wudalianchi volcanic group, NE china. They comprise scoria and spatter cones that consist of potassium-rich phono-tephritic pyroclastic deposits and lavas, and include wide lava flow fields. The Laoheishan scoria cone is a polygenetic multiple volcano that overlaps earlier and later edifices with more complicated internal structures produced in greater scale and in earlier time than the Huoshaoshan. There is a funnel-shaped crater in the center of the later edifice of the Laoheishan scoria cone. The Huoshaoshan spatter cone is a monogenetic simple volcano with a central pit crater. The volcanic sequences indicate eruption processes that followed a repeated pattern that progressed through 5 stages of explosive and effusive eruption including lava fountains and Strombolian eruptions in the Laoheishan, and a recognizable pattern of 2 stages that started with Strombolian eruption and progressed through lava effusion in the Huoshaoshan.
The achievements of Tateiwa Iwao's work in Korea are assessed as follows. Firstly, he pioneered the practice of stratigraphy in the Korean peninsula and completed geological maps of 21 sheets at 1:50,000 scale. Secondly, he published the results of a geological survey as bulletins, technical reports, and papers. Thirdly, he faithfully carried out the handover of assets and research outputs to Korea. Finally, after returning to Japan, Tateiwa wrote a book entitled The Korea-Japanese Tectonic Zone: History of a Geological Survey in Korea. However, he neglected to educate and train the next geologists for conducting geological surveys and exploration in Korea.
This study, geological survey was carried out in order to study on the geology, geological structure and volcanic activity of the Ulleung-do volcano body. Ulleung-do is the volcano body of about 3,000m heights from the East Sea seabed. The geology of Ulleung-do is divided into basaltic agglomerate, trachytic agglomerate, trachyte, trachytic pumice and trachyandesite in ascending orders. The faults in caldera of Nari Basin came to make the reverse triangle style in compliance with sinking. The faults in circumference of Nari Basin are ranging with northeast-southwest direction and northwest-southeast direction. The Quaternary volcanic activities in the Ulleung-do are divided into 5 activity period. The engineering geologists and the applied geologists were not easy to apply because complicated geology of Ulleung-do. Therefore, this study supplied simple geology of Ulleung-do for them.
The Dokdo volcano in the south-central part of the East Sea is classified into 8 rock units. The units and sequence suggest that the Dok Island forms a small stratovolcano constructed from at least 3 times eruption cycles above the sea level and proceeded with transformation of a few different eruption styles during each cycle. Reconstruction of the volcanic form, from the geologic structures and spatial lithofacies changes, suggests that the island is remnants of the southwestern caldera rim of the stratovolcano whose central part lies several hundred meters to the northeast. The subaqueous volcano shows abig guyot, which looks like a shield volcano, that represents gentle slope at 90-175 m deep and relatively steep one in 200∼2,000m, and 25∼30km wise base on sea floor. Therefore the total Dokdo volcano represents a multiple volcano that stratovolcano with small caldera overlies the big guyot.
The effect of small-scale near surface inhomogeneity on Rayleigh wave propagation and dispersion has been investigated in this study using two-dimensional FEM elastic modeling. Various inhomogeneity models with a variety of geometrical shape and embedment depth which exist in homogeneous half-space and two-layered media are considered. Results show that any near surface inhomogeneity greater than one wavelength in terms of minimum wavelength of Rayleigh wave shows dispersion characteristics. Such dispersion effect become stronger as the dimensions of the inhomogeneity increase. The effect of horizontal dimension is more dominant factor governing the dispersion characteristics than vertical dimension. However, the dispersion effect can not be identifiable in seismogram if the horizontal dimension is not wide enough. Nonetheless, even in this case, the existence of inhomogeneity can be inferred by the reflection or transmission event of Rayleigh wave. The results can be expected to provide insights on the behavior of Rayleigh wave which may be helpful for designating field work or new processing scheme to detect near surface inhomogeneity by surface wave method.
The Naeyeonsan Tuff is a stratigraphic unit which is distinguished as a cooling unit in the volcanic rocks of the northern Pohang. The Naeyeonsan Tuff, which is composed of crystals of plagioclase, quartz and hornblende, glasses of pumice and shard, and lithics of dacite, rhyolite, sandstone and shale, belongs to a lapilli tuff field according to the granulometric classification and to a vitric tuff field according to the constituent classification. The tuffs mostly develop welding foliations by dense welding and flatterning pumices and shards, and show several flow indicators by pyroclastic flowing. We can know a movement pattern from flow lineations and imbrications by pumices and lithics, and lateral gradings in isopleth map by average largest lithics and pumices in the Naeyeonsan Tuff, which indicate that the Naeyeonsan Tuff had a possible source area from the southeastern part.
Zeolites were formed by the alteration of volcanic glass in the volcaniclastics including tuff cone/rings and subsurface Seoguipo Formation, Jeju Island. Phillipsite and analcime were identified by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. Si/(Si+Al) atom ratios of analcime and phillipsite were similar to that of parent basaltic glass. In comparison with the simple chemistry of analcime, phillipsite showed a range of cavity cation compositions. Na is the major cavity cations of phillipsite in the Dangsanbong and Yongmeori tuffs bearing analcime, while K and Ca in core samples of Seoguipo Formation. Microtextural analysis by scanning electron microscope showed a general sequence that early phillipsite encrustification of pores was followed by later analcime infilling. Zeolites are abundant in the older tuff cone/rings but nearly absent in the younger ones.
Pebble-bearing clastic carbonate rock which has been found in and around the Jeongseon and Okgye through the field survey was studied in petrological and mineralogical characteristics. We define the clastic carbonate rocks as 'Dolomite-pebble bearing fine sand-sized dolostone, or grainstone', which are characterized by the existence of dolomite single grains and Mg-phengite, and by the subsequent formation of secondary calcite cements. These attributes correspond well with those of the typical Haengmae Formation from Haengmae-dong, Mitan-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, thus the carbonate rocks in the Jeongseon and Okgye areas must belong to the Haengmae Formation. The result suggests that the Haengmae Formation is an independent unit among the Paleozoic lithostratigraphic units in Taebaek basin and lies in the upper part of Jeongseon and Sukbyungsan Formations under the Hongjeom Formation of Pyeongan Supergroup.
The possibility of oil reserve has been conformed because the oil has been produced by 450 barrel per day in the West Korea Bay basin of the North Korea. There is also possibility of giant oil reserve since it is geographically close to one of the biggest oil fields of Bohai Basin, China. Based on the on-going oil exploration and the present condition of investment, the areas of ongoing oil exploration are three: West Korea Bay B&C prospect explored by Swedish Taurus, the north of West Korea Bay and Anju basin explored by Canadian SOCO, and East Korea Bay explored by Australian Beach Petroleum. However, there is little or no possibility of oil reserve in the rest sea areas of three. Even though oil reserves were discovered in the some parts of land areas such as Kilju and Myungcheon, it was presumed to have no economical efficiency. Geology in West Korea Bay off the North Korea is similar to that in Bohai Bay off China. The basement consists of thick carbonate rock of the Late Proterozoic and Early Paleozoic overlain by Mesozoic ($6,000{\sim}10,000\;m$) and Cenozoic ($4,000{\sim}5,000\;m$) units. Source rocks are Jurassic black shale (3,000 m or more), Cretaceous black shale ($1,000{\sim}2,000\;m$), and pre-Mesozoic carbonates (several thousand meters). Reservoir rocks are Mesozoic-Cenozoic sandstone with high porosity and pre-Mesozoic fractured carbonate rocks. Petroleum raps are of the anticline, fault sealed, buried hill, and stratigraphic types. It absolutely needs to take up a positive attitude, the activation of ocean science and technology exchange, and the joint research and development of modern MT (Marine Technology) considering the state of establishing new international ocean order forcing on building up 200 nautical mile EEZ (exclusive economic zone) among coastal nations. Both South and North Koreas should extend the ocean jurisdiction and contiguity, and MT development dealing with the same sea areas. It is more urgent problem to find a way to have the North Korea participated in, and then to develop ocean management and ocean industry individually.
