  • Rapid advances in technology and changes in human and cultural activities bring about changes to the earth surface in terms of spatial extension as well as time frame of the changes. Such advances introduce shorter updating frequency of maps and geospatial database. To satisfy these requirements, recent research efforts in the geoinformatics field have been focused on the automation and speeding up of the mapping processes which resulted in products such as the digital photogrammetric workstation, GPSIINS, applications of satellite imagery, automatic feature extraction and the LiDAR system. The possibility of automatically extracting buildings and generating contours from airborne LiDAR data has received much attention because LiDAR data produce promising results. However, compared with the manually derived building footprints using traditional photogrammetric process, more investigation and analysis need to be carried out in terms of accuracy and efficiency. On the other hand, generation of the contours with LiDAR data is more efficient and economical in terms of the quality and accuracy. In this study, the effects of various conditions of the pre-processing phase and the subsequent building extraction and contour generation phases for digital mapping have on the accuracy were investigated.

  • Recently, "Cadastral Confirmation Surveying" has been established to promote efficiently and systematically its work. To do so, it is necessary that cadastral control point should be set up and transverse grid coordinates should be determined for high accuracy and boundary restoration based on the cadastral control point. This study expects the potentially institutional problem of detail surveying and the limitation of Network-Real Time Kinematic, introduced to measure the cadastral control point first in the issued regulation, and thus presents the improvement and the management of the block boundary of larger parcel as solutions. This can be applied promptly, when the location difference of ground and border, registered in cadastral record for quake and others, occurs. Thus, the public confidence of cadastral record may become higher and relevant social costs get reduced by the advanced prevention effect of boundary dispute, which represents much to the management of cadastral institution. Provided cadastral confirmation surveying is implemented with the management of the block boundary of larger parcel, proposed in this study.

  • The National Geographic Information Institute of Korea and the Geographical surveying Institute of Japan carried out the GPS joint observation about Korea-Japan original Baseline in 2003 which had been connected for the first time between two countries since 1910. At the results, the orignal baseline produced by the GPS observations coincides with the geodetic results of 1910s within 40cm. Thus the observation results suggest that the surveying technique at that time must have been high level. and also it is confirmed what the world geodetic system adopted by Korea and Japan is matched well.

  • Generally, the latest acquisition method of geo-spatial informations in urban area is executed by generation of digital elevation model (DEM) and digital ortho image by digital photogrammetry method which is used large scale photo image. However, the biggest problem of this method is coarse accuracy of DEM which is automatically generated by digital photogrammetry workstation system. The coarse accuracy of DEM caused geo-spatial information in urban area to reduce of accuracy. Therefore, this study is purposed to increase of DEM accuracy which is applied to method terrain classification in urban area. As the results of this study, the proposed method of this study which is increased to accuracy of DEM by classification of terrain is better than accuracy of DEM which is automatically generated by digital photogrammetry workstaion system. And, the edge detection method which is proposed by this study is established to capability of 3D digital mapping in urban area.

  • Image mosaicking, which combines several images into one image, is effective for analyzing images and important in various fields of spatial information such as a continuous image map. The crucial processes of the image mosaicking are optimal seamline determination and color correction of mosaicked images. In this study, the overlap regions were determined by SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features) for image matching. Based on the characteristics of the edges extracted by Canny filter, seamline candidates were selected from classified edges with their characteristics, and the edges were connected by using Dijkstra algorithm. In particular, anisotropic filter and image pyramid were applied to extract reliable seamlines. In addition, it was possible to determine seamlines effectively and efficiently by utilizing building and road layers from digital maps. Finally, histogram matching and seamline feathering were performed to improve visual quality of the mosaicked images.

  • This study purposed on introducing a new automated solution for detecting railway tracks and reconstructing track models from the mobile laser scanning data. The proposed solution completes following procedures; the study initiated with detecting a potential railway region, called Region Of Interest (ROI), and approximating the orientation of railway track trajectory with the raw data. At next, the knowledge-based detection of railway tracks was performed for localizing track candidates in the first strip. In here, a strip -referring the local track search region- is generated in the orthogonal direction to the orientation of track trajectory. Lastly, an initial track model generated over the candidate points, which were detected by GMM-EM (Gaussian Mixture Model-Expectation & Maximization) -based clustering strip- wisely grows to capture all track points of interest and thus converted into geometric track model in the tracking by detection framework. Therefore, the proposed railway track tracking process includes following key features; it is able to reduce the complexity in detecting track points by using a hypothetical track model. Also, it enhances the efficiency of track modeling process by simultaneously capturing track points and modeling tracks that resulted in the minimization of data processing time and cost. The proposed method was developed using the C++ program language and was evaluated by the LiDAR data, which was acquired from MMS over an urban railway track area with a complex railway scene as well.

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the research trend of surveying in Korea through the analyses of research field and the published year of surveying related papers in journals and theses of master and Ph. D. The papers and theses published since 1957 were collected and analyzed to find out the major research topics and trends with time. The analyses of research trends in terms of time showed certain correlation between research areas, for example, remote sensing is highly correlated with GIS (98%), GPS correlated with GIS(95%). Through the regression analysis, it was found that the trends of the most fields were well-fitted with a third-order polynomial except the field of Geodesy. Furthermore, it was predicted that the number of studies in general surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing and land information will be increasing while those in GPS, GIS, digital map and Geodesy will be decreasing.

  • Digital Terrain Model is composed of two basic elements, namely, sampling and interpolation. They represent the procurement of data and the geometric reconstruction of terrain relief respectively. For evaluation DTM data, following two paremeters appear to be the most important factor, that is, the accuracy and efficiency and, in particular, the break point information significantly affect to the accuracy of DTM data. The main objective of this study is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of DTM by applying Progressive Sampling with distinct morphologic information. In this study, the total of 240 individual numerical tests has been implemented and the appropriate computer program is also developed for the test. The result of investigation shows that the Progressive Sampling with break point information improves the accuracy of DTM by 30 percent approximately.
