  • Aliphatic cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of different developmental stages of the spot clothing wax cicada, Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) were analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The numbers of carbons in the major CHCs of each developmental stage 32, 33, 28, 38, 37 in the egg, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar nymphal stages, and adults, respectively. The cuticle of Lycorma delicatula contains mainly methyl-branched 9-methylheptacosane (15.11%) in the egg stage, and a high proportion of n-heptacosane in nymphal stages (15.75, 22.42, 25.04, and 23.11 % in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars, respectively). In contrast, male and female adults had high proportions of n-nonacosane (13.42 and 16.55%). The chemical constituents of CHCs were classified into five groups (n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, trimethylalkanes, olefins) and group profiles of each developmental stage were compared. Egg surface was composed mainly monomethylalkanes (45.39%), a saturated hydrocarbon. Nymph CHCs consisted primarily of n-alkanes (37.63 to 46.12%). There was a difference between adult male and female CHCs. However, both contained n-alkanes and monomethylalkanes. CHCs with trimethyl or double bonded structure were rare in all stages.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the life history of Paralebeda plagifera femorata in 1998 and 1999. Ginkgo biloba was newly known to be a host plant for the species in this study. The moth has one generation a year. It overwinted as 6th instar larva on branches of the host plant. The 9th instar larva made a rough cocoon by webbing two or three leaves, and pupated on the branch on late June. The moths emerged from early July through early August with a peak around late July. A female oviposited 205 eggs on an average on the branch, twig, or leaf margin.

  • A new species of scale insect, Matsutoctus thunbergianae Miller and Park, is described using life history information and morphological characteristics of adult female, adult male, third instar male, and first instar. The species is morphologically similar to M. matsumurae (Kuwana) and M. resinosae Bean and Godwin; the most obvious structural differences are found in the adult male. The species is univoltine and overwinters as second instars, whereas M. matsumurae and M. resinosae are bivoltine and overwinter as first instars. Information is given supporting evidence that the same instar of different generations of multivoltine species differ significantly morphologically.

  • Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and methyl bromide (MeBr) fumigation on disinfestation and physicochemical attributes of mung bean were investigated. Insects in domestic mung bean were identified to be Collosobruchus chinensis Linne. Ina disinfestation test, MeBr showed 100% disinfestation effect on Larva and adult at 5th day after treatments, while irradiation dose above 3 kGy was effective for disinfesting all larva at that time. Adults were more sensitive to radiation than larva. Around 1 kGy was enough to control larva and adult in mung bean following 10 to 15 days of irradiation. In physicochemical properties of treated sampels, nitrogen solubility, TBA value, amino acid and fatty acid compositions were not different among the control, 2.5 kGy-irradiated and MeBr-fumigated samples. MeBr fumigation caused the decrease in lightness (Hunter's L value) and the increase in redness (a value) and yellowness (b value), thereby resulting in overall color difference (${\Delta}E$) in a noticeable level (NBS 2.61~2.94).

  • This study was carried out to investigated the developmental characteristics and spatial distribution of mango shield scale, Protopulvinaria mangiferae injuring to Elaeocarpus sylvestris(Lour.) This mango shield scale is parthenogentic. The oviparous female have three larval stages and adult. This species has two generation a year. The crawlers of the 1st generation emerged from late may to middle July, and those of the 2nd generation from early August to early October. Their emergence reached its peak in early part of the occurrence period. The crawlers disperse from 10 to 14 o'clock from ventral side of the adult and more than 90% had settled with in 8 hours on the leaves of E. sylvestris. The larvae and adults were distributed contagiously between trees. The adult densities were higher in the lower part of the crown than those in the middle or upper parts. But differents in densities were not significant among four directions. The distribution of the adult scales per leaf cluster showed an aggregation with a slightly colonized pattern.
