In this paper, we describe a process for optimally designing a ring-type permanent magnet thrust bearing. The bearing consists of two sets of permanent magnet rings. One set is located inside the other set. An axial offset between the two sets creates axial force, which results in a thrust bearing function. In order to realize an optimal design of the bearing where the required load capacity of the bearing is achieved with the least magnet volume, we derived analytical design equations by adopting the equivalent current sheet (ECS) method. We considered the following two types of magnet arrays: axial arrays and Halbach arrays. These two types of arrays are optimized using the analytical design equations. The results of the optimization are verified using three dimensional (3D) finite element analyses (FEA). The results show that the Halbach array can achieve the required load capacity with less amount of permanent magnet than the axial array does. The efficacy of the ECS method is also verified by using 3D FEA. It is found that the accuracy of ECS method is more sensitive to the underlying assumptions for the Halbach array than for the axial array.

This paper proposes engineering estimation equations of elastic-plastic J and COD fur axial through-wall cracked pipes under internal pressure. Based on detailed 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J and COD solutions are tabulated as a function of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the normalized crack length. and the strain hardening. Based on these results, the GE/EPRI-type J and COD estimation equations are proposed and validated against the 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity. For more general application to general stress-strain laws or to complex loading, the developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. Such a reformulation provides simpler equations for J and COD, which are then further extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed reference stress based J and COD estimation equations are compared with elastic-plastic 3-D FE results using actual stress-strain data for Type 316 stainless steels. The FE results for both internal pressure cases and combined internal pressure and bending cases compare very well with the proposed J and COD estimations.
A rubber bushing connects the components of the vehicle each other and reduce the vibration transmitted to the chassis frame. A rubber bushing has the nonlinear characteristics for both the amplitude and the frequency and represents the hysteretic responses under the periodic excitation. In this paper, one-axis durability test is performed to describe the mechanical behavior of typical vehicle elastomeric components. The results of the tests are used to develop m empirical bushing model with an artificial neural network. The back propagation algerian is used to obtain the weighting factor of the neural network. A numerical example is carried out to verify the developed bushing model and the vehicle simulation is performed to show the fidelity of proposed model.

Tangent stiffness matrices are derived for the torsional and lateral stability analysis of the space beams and framed structures with the symmetric thin-walled section by using the principle of virtual displacement. In the cases of restrained torsion and unrestrained torsion, the elastic and geometric stiffness matrices are evaluated by using the Hermitian polynomials which represent the displacement field of the beam element in simple flexure. Numerical examples illustrate the accuracy and convergence characteristics of the derived formulations.
In this paper a method is suggested for the probabilistic analysis of impact buckling failure time of cylinder with random axisymmetric geometric imperfection under axial impact. Failure is assumed as axisymmetric radial deformation exceeds the given criteria for the first time. For the generation of random geometric initial imperfection, random field theory by mean function and autocorrelation function of geometric imperfection is used. Suggested method is useful for the treatment of the randomness of realistic geometric imperfection and can be used for the structural safety analysis of cylinder considering its effect.

This paper presents the surface profile of machined workpiece in face milling operation. The roughness model of feed direction is considered the cutting condition, the profile and run-out of inserts. For the dynamic model the cutting system can be modeled as avibratory system. The dynamic model of surface roughness is considered the relative displacements between tool and work- piece which can be obtained from the cutting system. These model can predict various surface roughnesses. i.e. maximum and arithmetic mean surface ruughnesses. Therefore, the developed model can be used for the monitoring of surface roughness.

In an oil hydraulic piston pump, the cylinder block and valve plate in high speed relative sliding motion have the characteristics which should be extremely controlled for the optimization of leakage and friction losses, and pressure-resistance design of them is very important for high pressure performance. But the studies on the stress analysis of those parts have not been performed briskly. Therefore, in this paper, the stress and displacement distributions of the cylinder block and valve plate in the oil hydraulic piston pump with a swash plate type are discussed through the static stress analysis using CATIA V5. The stress and displacement of the cylinder block are more influenced by the axial pressure than by the radial pressure, and are larger by approximately 66% and 30%, respectively. The results show that a review of the material and shape of the valve plate is required.

This research is a park of a research program to develope a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under axial load and cyclic lateral load. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between curvature ductility and displacement ductility and to propose a correlation equation for designing of reinforced concrete bridge columns under axial load and cyclic lateral load. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 spirally reinforced concrete columns were selected considering the main variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. A new equation between curvature ductility factor displacement ductility factor with the aspect ratio was proposed by investigation of 21,600 data produced from the selected column models by applying 3 different definitions of yield displacement.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution in bone and displacement distribution of the miniscrew according to the length and number of the miniscrews used for the fixation of miniplate, and the direction of orthodontic force. Methods: Four types of finite element models were designed to show various lengths (6 mm, 4 mm) and number (3, 2) of 2 mm diameter miniscrew used for the fixation of six holes for a curvilinear miniplate. A traction force of 4 N was applied at $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to an imaginary axis connecting the two most distal unfixed holes of the miniplate. Results: The smaller the number of the miniscrew and the shorter the length of the miniscrew, the more the maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew increased. Most von Mises stress in the bone was absorbed in the cortical portion rather than in the cancellous portion. The more the angle of the applied force to the imaginary axis increased, the more the maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew increased. The maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew were measured around the most distal screw-fixed area. Condusions: The results suggest that the miniplate system should be positioned in the rigid cortical bone with 3 miniscrews of 2 mm diameter and 6 mm length, and its imaginary axis placed as parallel as possible to the direction of orthodontic force to obtain good primary stability.
The fatigue happening during the road riding of the vehicle and for the moment the aircraft lands on the runway is closely related to the life cycle of the landing gear, the airframe, the vehicle's suspension, etc. The multiple loads acting on the wheel are longitudinal, lateral, vertical, and braking forces. To study the dynamic characteristics and fatigue stiffness of the vehicle, the dynamic fatigue simulator generally has been used to represent the real road vibration in the lab. It can save time and cost. In hardware, the critical factor in the hydraulic fatigue simulator structure is to decouple each axis and to endure several load vibration. In this paper, the inverse kinematic analysis method derives the magnitude of movement of the hydraulic servo actuator by the coupling after rendering the maximum movement displacement in the axial direction at the center of the dummy wheel. The result of the analysis is that the coupling between the axes is weak to reproduce the real road vibrations precisely.
