  • Uniaxial stress in ail axisymmetric body is the simplest example of ultrasonic stress measurement. However, the birefringence theory cannot be applied for axisymmetric solids because the axisymmetric stress field in the body does not make shy velocity difference in SH waves propagating in the axisymmetric direction. Conventional ultrasonic technique using the time-of-flight method also needs ultrasonic lengths of the unstressed and stressed body, which is very impractical. In this paper, the birefringence effect in axisymmetric solids under uniaxial stress is formulated to evaluate the axial stress inside the solid without measuring tile ultrasonic length. Theoretical derivation for the birefringence characteristics in the axisymmetric solids is made using the longitudinal and shear waves instead of two horizontally polarized shear waves. Tension test is conducted for carbon-steel specimen to measure the birefringence coefficient and investigate the validity of the theory. It is observed from experimental results that the velocity difference in two differently polarized acoustic waves is proportional to the uniaxial stress in the axisymmetric solid with a good agreement with the theoretical value.

  • The effect of duplicate flexible disks on the vibrational modes of a flexible rotor system is investigated by using an anlytical method based on the assumed modes method. The rotor model to be analyzed consists of duplicate disks on a flexible shaft. In modeling the system, centrifugal stiffening and disk flexibility effects are taken into account. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, a hard disk drive spindle system commonly used in personal computers and a simple flexible rotor system with two disks are selected as examples. In particular, the dynamic coupling between the vibrational modes of the shaft and the duplicate disks is investigated with the shaft rotational speed varied.

  • The stresses in concrete pavement systems are larger when vehicle loads are applied at pavement edges, and these large stresses significantly affect the behavior and performance of pavements. Therefore, in this study, the stress distribution and the critical stresses in concrete pavements were investigated using a finite element model when dual-wheel single-, tandem-, and tridem-axle loads were applied at pavement edges. First, the stress distribution along the longitudinal and transverse directions was analyzed, and then the effects of slab thickness, concrete elastic modulus, and foundation stiffness on the stress distribution were investigated. The effect of the tire contact pressure related to the tire print area was also studied. The location of the critical stress occurrence in concrete pavements was finally investigated. From this study, it was found that the critical concrete stress due to edge loads became larger as the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The effect of the tire contact pressure on the critical stress was clear as the slab thickness became smaller. The critical stress location in the transverse direction was independent of the concrete elastic modulus and the foundation stiffness; however, it moved into the interior as the slab thickness increased. The critical stress location in the longitudinal direction was under the axle for single- and tandem-axle loads, but for tridem-axle loads, it tended to move under the middle axle from the outer axles as the concrete elastic modulus and/or slab thickness increased and the foundation stiffness decreased.

  • Horizontal-axes on the seismic section have been represented in a distance unit by applying horizontal-distance correction transformation on a 2-D seismic section of single channel marine seismic data. By drawing horizontal-axes in a distance unit, distortion of horizontal distances shown on the seismic section when the ship speed varies during a survey can be diminished considerably. Position information obtained by GPS and stored in each trace of seismic data as well as data collection windows were used for horizontal distance correction. The minimum window length was decided by considering ship speed and shot interval, and the maximum window length wat determined by reflecting radius of the 1st Fresnel zone. In choosing an optimum window length, horizontal resolution and stacking effect were considered simultaneously. By applying horizontal distance correction we could get a 2-D seismic section which is considered at reflecting the real subsurface structure analogously.

  • The stress distribution and the critical stresses in concrete pavements were analyzed using formulations in the transformed field domains when dual-wheel single-, tandem-, and tridem-axle loads were applied. First the accuracy of the transformed field domain analysis results was verified by comparing with the finite element analysis results. Then, the stress distribution along the longitudinal and transverse directions was investigated, and the effects of slab thickness, concrete elastic modulus, and foundation stiffness on the stress distribution were studied. The effect of the tire contact pressure related to the tire print area was also studied, and the location of the critical stress occurrence in concrete pavements was finally investigated. From this study, it was found that the critical concrete stress due to multi-axle loads became larger as the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The number of axles did not tend to affect the critical stress ratio except for a small foundation stiffness value with which the critical stress ratio became significantly larger as the number of axles increased. The critical stress location in the transverse direction tended to move into the interior as the tire contact pressure increased, the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The critical stress location in the longitudinal direction was under the axle for single- and tandem-axle loads, but for tridem-axle loads, it tended to move under the middle axle from the outer axles as the concrete elastic modulus and/or slab thickness increased and the foundation stiffness decreased.

  • The test results from three one fourth scale models using high strength Reinforced Concrete $f_x=704\;kg/cm^2,\;f_y=5.830\;kg/cm^2$ are presented. Such specimens are considered to represent the critical 3 storics of 60-story tall building of a structural wall system in area of high seismicity respectively. They are tested under inplane vertical and horizontal loading. The main varlable is the level of axial stress. The amounts of vertical and horizontal reinforcement are identical for the three walls testcd. The cross-section of all walls is barbell shape. The aspectratio($h_w/I_w$) of test specimen is 1.8. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of levels of applied axial stresses on the inelastic behavior of high-strength R /C tall walls. Experimental results of high strength R /C tall walls subjected to axial load and simulated sels rnic loading show that it is possible to insure a ductlle dominant performance by promotmg flex ural yielding of vertical reinforcement and that axial stresses within $O.21f_x$ causes an increase in horizontal load-carrying capacity, initial secant st~ffness characteristics, but an decrease in displacement ductility. energy dissipation index and work damage index of high strength K /C tall walls
