  • This paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for cylinders with finite internal axial surfacecracks under internal pressure. The proposed equation is the J estimation equation based on deformation plasticity using Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials. Based on detailed 3-D FE results using deformation plasticity, plastic influence functions for fully plastic J components are tabulated for practically interesting ranges of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the crack depth-to-length ratio, the crack depth-to-thickness ratio. the strain hardening index for the R-O material, and the location along the semi-elliptical crack front. Based on tabilated plastic influence functions, the J estimation equation along the crack front is proposed and validated for R-O materials. Good agreements between the FE results and the proposed J estimation provide confidence in the use of the proposed method to elastic-plastic fracture mechanics of pressurized piping.

  • Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are widely used with an increasing demand for industrial applications. PCHEs are capable of operating at high temperatures and pressure. We consider a PCHE as a candidate intermediate heat exchanger type for a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). For conventional application using stainless steels, design and manufacturing of PCHEs are well established. For applications to HTGR, knowledge of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel is required to estimate design margin. This paper analyzes the effects of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel on thermal performance using a code internally developed for design and analysis of PCHEs. The code has a capability of two dimensional simulations. Longitudinal conduction is estimated using the code. In HTGR operating condition, about ten percent of design margin is required to compensate thermal performance. The cross-sectional images of PCHE channels are obtained using an optical microscope. The images are processed with computer image process technique. We quantify the deformation of channel with dimensional parameters. It is found that the deformation has negative effect on structural integrity. The deformation enhances thermal performance when the shape of channel is straight in laminar flow regime. It reduces thermal performance in cases of a zigzag channel and turbulent flow regime.

  • The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) has been widely used to determine the mechanical properties of materials at high loading rates. However, to ensure test reliability, the source of measurement error must be identified and eliminated. During the experiment, specimens were placed between the incident and the transmit bar. Contact friction between the test bars and specimen may cause errors. In this study, numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of friction on the test results. In the SHPB test, the stress measured by the transmitted bar is assumed to be the flow stress of the test specimen. However, performing numerical experiments, it was shown that the stress measured by the transmit bar is axial stress components. When the contact surface is frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress of the specimen are approximately equal. On the other hand, when the contact surface is not frictionless, the flow stress and axial stress are no longer equal. The effect of friction on the difference between the flow stress and axial stress was investigated.

  • The proposed model can predict the compressive behaviors of concrete confined with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacket. To model confining concrete by FRP jackets, the hypoelasticity-based constitutive law of concrete In tri-axial stress states has been presented. The increment of strength of concrete has been determined by the failure surface of concrete in tri-axial states, and its corresponding peak strain is computed by the strain enhancement factor that is proposed in the present study, Therefore, the newly proposed model is a load-dependent confinement model of concrete wrapped by FRP jackets to compare the previous models which are load-independent confinement models. The behavior of FRP jackets has been modeled using the mechanics of orthotropic laminated composite materials in two-dimension. The developed model is implemented into the incremental analysis of compressive tests. The verification study with several different experiments shows that the model is able to adequately capture the behavior of the compression test by including better estimations of the axial responses as well as the lateral response of FRP-confined concrete cylinders.

  • The behavior characteristics of underground structures are reported as they are not affected by their dynamic characteristics such as surface structures, but by dynamic characteristics of soil and rock surrounding the underground structures. Therefore, dynamic behavior of surrounding soil and rock dominates the dynamic behavior of the underground structure. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic response (longitudinal deformation and ovaling deformation) of the underground structure under earthquake loading. The dynamic responses of the underground structures were evaluated with varying earthquake conditions, soil conditions, and structural conditions using conventional closed-form solution of seismic behavior of underground structure. In addition, shaking table tests were conducted to simulate the earthquake loading and the dynamic behavior of the model was analyzed.

  • In this paper, axial strains and lateral displacements of columns in a 58-story reinforced concrete building were measured using vibrating wire gauge and laser scanner, respectively, and compared with predicted values. Predictions were obtained using ASAP, which is a 3D construction stage analysis program developed based on PCA report. Comparisons indicated that columns in the middle of floor plan showed good correlation with predictions. However, the columns in the corners showed some deviations. Lateral displacement of columns between measurement and estimation showed similar trends but considerable deviations, which are seemingly caused by construction error of column faces, and inaccuracy in differential vertical displacement prediction.

  • In recent times, due to wire drawing of high carbon steel at a high speed to ensure a high productivity and high strength, axial residual stress are generated because of rapid increase in surface temperature. In the process, the temperatures of the wires increased because of the deformation of the wires and the friction between the die and wire. In particular, in the case of the wire drawing at a high speed, friction leads to a large temperature gradient so that considerable axial residual stress is generated on the surface. In this study, the relationship between axial residual stress and increase in the surface temperature was investigated, and a prediction model of uniform temperature was proposed. Then, a prediction model for residual stress was developed. The proposed model was verified by measuring the residual stress by X-ray diffraction on drawn wires.

  • The axisymmetric methane-air counterflow flame was simulated to investigate changes in the flame structure due to the fuel concentration and to evaluate the numerical method. The global strain rates $a_g=20,\;60,\;90\;s^{-1}$ and the mole fractions of methane $x_m=20,\;50,\;80\%$ in the fuel stream were taken to be numerical parameters. The axisymmetric simulation was conducted by using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) which employed a mixture fraction combustion model, and the results were compared with those of OPPDIF, which is an one-dimensional flamelet code and includes detail chemical reactions. In all the cases tested, there was good agreement in the temperature and axial velocity profiles between the axisymmetric and one-dimensional simulations. It was shown that the flame thickness and peak flame temperature increase and the flame radius decreases as the fuel concentration increases.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete under uniaxial and biaxial loading condition. A number of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete cubes having 28 days compression strength of 82.7MPa(12,000 psi) were made and tested. Four principal compression stress ratios ($\sigma_2/\sigma_1$=0.00, 050, 0.75 and 1.00), and four fiber concentrations($V_f$ =0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and $1.5\%$) were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that confinement stress in minor stress direction has pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. Both of the stiffness and ultimate strength of the plain and fiber high strength concrete Increased. The maximum increase of ultimate strength occurred at biaxial stress ratio of 0.5($\sigma_2/\sigma_1=0.5$) in the plain high strength concrete and the value were recorded $30\%$ over than the strength under uniaxial condition. The failure modes of plain high strength concrete under uniaxial compression were shown as splitting type of failure but steel fiber concrete specimens under biaxial condition showed shear type failure. The values of elastic modulus were also examined higher than that from ACI and CEB expression under biaxial compression condition.
