  • Solid propulsion systems have simple structures compared to other propulsion systems and are suitable for long-term storage. However the systems generally have limits on control of thrust levels. In this paper we introduce controllers for combustion chamber pressure using on-off control techniques which have been known for relatively easy implementation and energy efficiency. For this, we use a simple pressure change model by considering only mass conservation within the combustion chamber and we design a classical controllers and on-off controllers with are Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) and Pulse Width Pulse Frequency Modulation (PWPFM). Then we compare the performance results of the controllers through numerical simulations.

  • Design and performance evaluation of $H_2O_2$ monopropellant thrusters to be used at reaction control of space launch vehicles were presented in this paper. Design thrust level was determined as 100, 250 Newton which is nominal thrust level for commercial space launch vehicles. Qualification thruster models including solenoid valves were developed after the reactor design were evaluated at engineering thruster models. Each thruster was evaluated by measurement of characteristic velocity, thrust, specific impulse, and pulse response times at sea level test condition.

  • This paper suggests two kinds of reaction control system command generation methods for upper stage attitude control of launch vehicles. The reaction control system is assumed to consist of two sets of three nozzles. One operation technology is based on mixed attitude error functions, and the other is based on command mixing functions. Both are compared via simulations. The simulation results show that the latter is comparatively preferable in terms of interference among control axes, independency of controller design and analysis among axes, and prediction of flight performance of each control axis.

  • An attitude control system using reaction thrusters for the upper stage of a launch vehicle is considered. The thruster configuration (position and direction) determines control system response, fuel consumption, effective torque and system fault tolerance. We propose a procedure for finding the optimal thruster configuration with desired control effectiveness over the range of selected torque commands. An optimization technique called Particle Swarm Optimization is used for the numerical experiments. The validity of the solution is checked through computer simulations.

  • With the advancement of technology, miniaturization, integration, and weight reduction have become possible, and the existing medium and large satellites have been replaced by small satellites, and the need for a micro thruster has emerged. Laser ablation micro-thruster is a new type thruster using laser ablation. It is emerging as a new candidate in micro-thrusters with wide thrust range and low single impulse thrust. The objective of present study is to introduces the structure, propellant, and research trends of the laser ablation micro-thruster.

  • The mission life of a satellite determines the amount of fuel required on-board, while the total mass requirement limits the fuel to be loaded. Hence, for the design of thruster control loop, not only the satellite pointing accuracy but the saving of fuel is to be considered. In this paper, a two-step fuzzy controller is proposed for the thruster control loop to save fuel consumption. This approach combines requirements for pointing control accuracy with minimum fuel consumption into a fuzzy controller design. To demonstrate this approach, we have designed a fuzzy controller for the Sun Pointing Mode of KOMPSAT-1. The performance of this fuzzy controller design is compared with that of PD controller used for KOMPSAT-1.

  • This paper shows the development status of attitude control thruster for KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite). Hanwha Corp. has manufactured and delivered 1.0 lbf monopropellant thrusters under the technology transfer of TRW Co. in U.S.A regarding design, analysis and manufacturing of MRE-1 thruster These thrusters will be installed to KOMPSAT which is scheduled to be launched in July 1999. Monopropellant thrusters can provide reliable and cost-effective means of propulsive control for middle class satellite and maneuvering control systems. Some information concerning with system specification, performance analysis/simulations and manufacturing process has been introduced in this paper.

  • MEMS based solid propellant thruster researched for the purpose of an academic research will be verified at space environment through CubeSat program. For this, the temperature of the MEMS thruster should be within allowable operating temperature range by proper thermal control to prevent the ignition failure caused by ignition time delay and to guarantee the structural safety of the MEMS thruster in the low temperature. In this study, we proposed an effective thermal control strategy, that is to use micro-igniter as a heater and temperature sensor for active thermal control instead of using additional heater. The effectiveness of the strategy has been verified through on-orbit thermal analysis of CubeSats with MEMS thruster.

  • Satellite propulsion system is employed for orbit transfer, orbit correction, and attitude control. The monopropellant feeding system in the low-earth-orbit satellite blowdowns fuel to the thrust chamber. The thrust produced by the thruster depends on fuel amount flowed into the combustion chamber. If the thruster valve be given on-off signal from on-board commander in the satellite, valve will be opened or closed. When the thrusters fire fuel flows through opened thruster valve, instantaneous stoppage of flow in according to valve actuation produces transient pressure due to pressure wave. This paper describes transient pressure predictions of the KOMPSAT-2 propulsion system resulting from latching valve and thrust control valve operations. The time-dependent set of the fluid mass and momentum equations are calculated by MOC.
