Flow carrying capacity of water distribution systems is getting reduced by deterioration of pipes in the systems. The objective of this study is to develop a managerial decision-making model for the rehabilitation of water distribution systems with a minimum cost. The decisions made by the model also satisfy the requirements for the discharge and pressure at demanding nodes in the system. The replacement cost, pipe break repair cost, and pumping cost are considered in the economic evaluation of the decision along with the break ratio and interest ratio to determine the optimal replacement time for each pipe. Then, the hydraulic integrity of the water distribution system is checked for the decision by a pipe network simulator, KYPIPE, if the discharge and pressure requirements, the decision made for the optimal replacement time is revised until the requirements are satisfied. The model is applied to an existing water distribution system, the Metropolita Water Supply Project (1st Phase). The result shows that the decisions for the replacement time determined by the economix analysis are accepted as optimal and the hydraulic integrity of the system is in good condition.
MTF message is the normalized and standardized format which is used in the time when it tries to transmit data to other systems or exchanges needed information in defense message systems. XML can support variety of search functionality and is estimated to be the best way from the view of efficient presentation and exchange in internet based environment, based on advantage which is independent of hardware and software. US army brought in XML-MTF combining with XML based technology, but we do not contain such a MTF system, and necessity of MTF is increasing for combined operation between ROK and US as a lot of C4I system were transferred to Web based systems. In this paper, we make analysis of fundamental structure, organization of paragraph, witting regulation of MTF message. We present the rule of naming element and fundamental mapping rule for transformation of its XML based on it. Also, we prove that MTF message can be transformed to XML document by trying to transforming sample documents to XML document applying presented mapping rule, creating MTF message based on it and implement program which can automatically transform them to XML-MTF.

The development of unmanned robots and UAVs has increased the need for path planning methods such as RRT* algorithm. It mostly works well in various environments and is utilized in many fields. A lot of research has been conducted to obtain a better path in terms of efficiency through various modifications to the RRT* algorithm, and the performance of the algorithm is continuously improved thanks to these efforts. In this study, a method using the limitation of sampling range is proposed as an extension of these efforts. Based on the idea that a path passing close to obstacles is similar to the optimal path in obstacle environments, nodes are produced around the obstacle. Also, rewiring algorithm is modified to quickly obtain the path. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated by comparative analysis of the previous basic algorithm and the generated path is tracked by a UAV's kinematic model for further verification.

Among various microscopic organisms producing photobiological hydrogen, cyanobacteria have long been recognized as the promising biological agents for hydrogen economy in 21 century. For photobiological production of hydrogen energy, marine unicellular $N_2$-fixing cyanobacteria have been evaluated as an ideal subgroup of Cyanophyceae. To develope the hydrogen production technology using unicellular $N_2$-fixing cyanobacteria, 3 important factors are pre-requisite: 1) isolation of the best strain from marine natural environment, 2) exploration on the strain-specific optimal conditions for the photobiological hydrogen production, and finally 3) application of the molecular genetic tools to improve the natural ability of the strain to produce hydrogen. Here we reviewed the recent research & development to commercialize photobiological hydrogen production technology, and suggest that intensive R&D during next 10-15 years should be imperative for the future Korean initiatives in the field of the photobiological hydrogen production technology using photosynthetic marine unicellular cyanobacterial strains.
The aims of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for carcass traits on Hanwoo(Korean Native Cattle) and to compare two different statistical algorithms for estimating genetic parameters. Data obtained from 1526 steers at Hanwoo Improvement Center and Hanwoo Improvement Complex Area from 1996 to 2001 were used for the analyses. The carcass traits considered in these studies were carcass weight, dressing percent, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, and marbling score. Estimated genetic parameters using EM-REML algorithm were compared to those by Bayesian inference via Gibbs Sampling to find out statistical properties. The estimated heritabilities of carcass traits by REML method were 0.28, 0.25, 0.35, 0.39 and 0.51, respectively and those by Gibbs Sampling method were 0.29, 0.25, 0.40, 0.42 and 0.54, respectively. This estimates were not significantly different, even though the estimated heritabilities by Gibbs Sampling method were higher than ones by REML method. Since the estimated statistics by REML method and Gibbs Sampling method were not significantly different in this study, it is inferred that both mothods could be efficiently applied for the analysis of carcass traits of cattle. However, further studies are demanded to define an optimal statistical method for handling large scale performance data.
Strain improvement and bioprocess development were undertaken to enhance hyaluronic acid(HA) production by Streptococcus zooepidemicus cells. Using a high-yielding mutant strain, statistical medium optimization was carried out in shake flask cultures, resulting in 52% increase in HA production (5.38 g/l) at the optimal medium composition relative to the parallel control cultures. For sufficient supply of dissolved oxygen (DO), which turned out to be crucial for enhanced production of HA, agitation system and speed were intensively investigated in 5 L bioreactor cultures. Increase in oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) through increment of agitation speed (rpm) and 35% expansion of diameter of the newly-designed impellers showed significantly positive effects on HA production. By installing an expanded Rushton-turbine impeller for efficient break-down of sparged air, and an extended marine impeller above the Rushton-turbine impeller for efficient mixing of the air-born viscous fermentation broth, maximum amount of HA (9.79 g/l) was obtained at 450 rpm, 1.8 times higher level than that of the corresponding flask culture. Subsequently, the possibility of bioprocess scale-up to a 50 L bioreactor was investigated. Despite almost identical maximum HA production (9.11 vs 9.25 g/l), the average HA volumetric productivity (rp) of the 50 L culture turned out only 74% compared to the corresponding 5 L culture during the exponential phase, possibly caused by shear damages imposed on the producing cells at the high stirring in the 50 L culture. The scale-up process could be successfully achieved if a scale-up criterion of constant oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) is applied to the 50 L pilot-scale bioreactor system.
Physical and chemical properties of root zone mixes and methods of green construction are important considerations for improving turf grass quality for putting greens. This study compared Penncross creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) performance as affected by three root zone construction systems with three amendments (sand, peat, and zeolite). The objective of this study was to determine if an amended California construction system would improve green performance during establishment (1998-1999) and maturation (2000-2001). Three treatments were tested: California ($100\%$ sand), USGA($90\%$ sand and $10\%$ peat, v/v), and California-Z ($85\%$ sand and $15\%$ zeolite, v/v). Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replicates. Physical and chemical properties of the root zone and bentgrass performance were compared for the treatments. The California-Z treatment had the highest saturated hydraulic conductivity, field infiltration rate and the lowest bulk density. It also had the highest cation exchange capacity and plant available nutrient concentrations among the three treatments. The California-Z treatment produced bentgrass quality and color during green establishment and maturation that were equal to or higher than the California treatment, and consistently higher than the USGA treatment. The addition of an inorganic amendment to the California system improved physical and chemical properties of the root zone and improved quality and color of bentgrass during green establishment. During green maturation, creeping bentgrass in the California-Z treatment was equal (6 of 15 sampling dates) or $20\%$ higher (9 of 15 dates) in quality compared to the California system.
The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the optimum mix design and site application case of soil mixing wall (SMW) method which is cost-effective technique for construction of walls for cutoff wall and excavation support as well as for ground improvement before constructing LNG storage tank typed under-ground. Considering native soil condition in site, main materials are selected ordinary portland cement, bentonite as a binder slurry and also it is applied $1,833kg/m^3$ as an unit volume weight of native soil, Variations for soil mixing wall are as followings ; (1) water-cement ratio 4cases (2) mixing velocity (rpm) 3levels (3) bleeding capacity and ratio, compressive strength in laboratory and site application test. As test results, bleeding capacity and ratio are decreased in case of decreasing water-cement ratio and increasing mixing velocity. Required compressive strength (1.5 MPa) considering safety factors in site is satisfied with the range of water-cement ratio 150% below, and test results of core strength are higher than those of specimen strength in the range of 8~23% by actual application of element members including outside and inside in site construction work. Therefore, optimum mix design of soil mixing wall is proposed in the range of unit cement $280kg/m^3$, unit bentonite $10kg/m^3$, water-cement ratio 150% and mixing velocity 90rpm and test results of site application case are satisfied with the required properties.
Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.

In this study installation diameter, interval, area replacement ratio and ground hardness of applicable ground in C.G.S method should be mastered through surrounding ground by conducting modeling. Optimum artificial neural network was selected through the study of the parameter of artificial neural network and prediction model was developed by the relationship with numerical analysis and artificial neural network. As this result, C.G.S pile settlement and ground settlement were found to be equal in terms of diameter, interval, area replacement ratio and ground hardness, presented in a single curve, which means that the behavior pattern of applied ground in C.G.S method was presented as some form, and based on such a result, learning the artificial neural network for 3D behavior was found to be possible. As the study results of artificial neural network internal factor, when using the number of neural in hidden layer 10, momentum constant 0.2 and learning rate 0.2, relationship between input and output was expressed properly. As a result of evaluating the ground behavior of C.G.S method which was applied to using such optimum structure of artificial neural network model, is that determination coefficient in case of C.G.S pile settlement was 0.8737, in case of ground settlement was 0.7339 and in case of ground heaving was 0.7212, sufficient reliability was known.
