The purpose of this study is the optimum modification of dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure. In the method of the optimization, finite element method(FEM), sensitivity analysis and optimum structural modification method are used. To begin with, using FEM, the dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure is analyzed. Next, rate of change of dynamic characteristics by the change of design variable is calculated using the sensitivity analysis. Then, amount of change of design variable is calculated using this sensitivity value and optimum structural modification method. The change of natural frequency is made to be an objective function. Thickness of plate and cross section moment become a design variable. It is shown that the results are effective in the optimum modification for dynamic characteristics of the stiffened plate structure.

Since an orthotropic steel deck bridge has large number of design variables and shows complex structural behavior, it would be very difficult and impractical to directly use a Conventional Single Level (CSL) optimization algorithm for its optimum design. Thus, in this paper, an Improved Multi Level Design Synthesis (IMLDS) optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the computational efficiency. In the proposed IMLDS algorithm, a coordination method is introduced to divide the bridge into main girders and orthotropic steel deck with preserving the characteristics of the structural behavior. For an efficient optimization of the bridge, the IMLDS algorithm incorporates the various crucial approximation techniques such as constraints deletion, Automatic Differentiation (AD), stress reanalysis, and etc. In the case of orthotropic steel deck system, optimum design problems are characterized by mixed continuous discrete variables and discontinuous design space. Thus, a modified Genetic Algorithm (GA) is also applied to optimize discrete member design for orthotropic steel deck. From the numerical example, the efficiency and convergency of the IMLDS algorithm proposed in this paper is investigated. It may be positively stated that the IMLDS algorithm will lead to more effective and practical design compared with previous algorithms.

A cyclocopter propelled by the cycloidal blade system, which can be described as a horizontal rotary wing, is a new concept of VTOL vehicle. In this paper, optimized structure design is carried out for the aerodynamically optimized cyclocopter rotor system. Database is obtained fer design variables such as stacking sequence (ply angles), number of plies and spar locations through MSC/NASTRAN and optimum values are determined by RSM and some other optimizing processes. For the rotor system including optimized blade and composite hub m, the maximum stress by static analysis is within the failure criteria. And the rotor system is designed for the purpose of avoiding possible dynamic instabilities by inconsistency between frequencies of rotor rotation and some low natural frequencies of rotor.

Topology optimization has been evolved into a very efficient conceptual design tool and has been utilized into design engineering processes. Traditional topology optimization has been using homogenization method and optimality criteria method. homogenization method provides relationship equation between structure which includes many holes and stiffness matrix in FEM. Optimality criteria method is used to update design variables while maintaining that volume fraction is uniform. Traditional topology optimization has advantage of good convergence but has disadvantage of too much convergency time. In one way to solve this problem, element removal method using the criterion of an average stress is presented. As the result of examples, it is certified that convergency time is very reduced.

This paper deals with the adjoint variable method in design sensitivity analysis that is essential to the structure optimization. The method is shown to be much simpler than the conventional method in structure optimization by applying it to the optimal design of finite dimensional structures. Design sensitivity analyses and their numerical solutions for the principal constraints, i.e., displacement and stress constraints under static loads are obtained. Furthermore, it is proved that optimization can be carried out efficiently by applying the optimization algorithm. Structure optimization problems of minimizing the volumes of the truss structures(finite dimensional structures) under the appropriate boundary conditions, loading conditions and constraints are considered.
Using the genetic algorithm, the optimal-design technique of the Nielsen arch bridge was proposed in this paper. The design parameters were the arch-rise ratio and the steel weight ratio of the Nielsen arch bridge, and optimal-design techniques were utilized to analyze the behavior of the bridge. The optimal parameter values were determined for the estimated optimal level. The parameter determination requires the standardization of the safety, utility, and economic concepts as the critical factors of a structure. For this, a genetic algorithm was used, whose global-optimal-solution search ability is superior to the optimization technique, and whose object function in the optimal design is the total weight of the structure. The constraints for the optimization were displacement, internal stress, and time and space. The structural analysis was a combination of the small displacement theory and the genetic algorithm, and the runtime was reduced for parallel processing. The optimal-design technique that was developed in this study was employed and deduced using the optimal arch-rise ratio, steel weight ratio, and optimal-design domain. The optimal-design technique was presented so it could be applied in the industry.
This study treats the criteria, considering the fuzziness occurred by optimization design. And we applied two weighting methods to show the relative importance of criteria. This study develops multi-objective optimization programs implementing plain stress analysis by FEM and discrete optimization design uniformaly. The developed program performs a sample design of 10-member steel truss. This study can carry over the multi-objective optimization based on total system fuzzy-genetic algorithms while performing the stress analysis and optimization design. Especially, when general optimization with unreliable constraints is cannot be solve this study can make optimization design closed to realistic with fuzzy theory.
In this study, an optimal structural design framework has been developed for the structural design of composite helicopter blades. The optimal design framework is constructed using PSGA (Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm), which combines the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimizer. The optimization process consists of a finite element (FE) modeling over the blade section, two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional FE analysis, and 1D rotating blade analysis. In the design process, the geometric curves and surfaces are formed using the B-spline scheme while discretizing the sections via a FE mesh generation program Gmsh. The blade cross-sections are created in accordance with the design variables when performing the blade structural analysis. The proposed optimization design framework is applied to a modernization of the HART II (Higher-harmonic Aeroacoustics Rotor Test II) blades. It is demonstrated that an improved blade design is reached through the current optimization framework with the satisfaction of all design requirements set for the study.
