  • A trapezoidal fin with various lateral surface slopes is designed optimally by using one-dimensional analytic method. For four different convection characteristic numbers, the trend of heat loss as a function of fin tip length is shown. The optimum heat loss is somewhat arbitrarily chosen as 92% of the maximum heat loss. The optimum fin length corresponding to this optimum heat loss versus convection characteristic number is presented. The optimum effectiveness and specific effectiveness is presented as a function fin shape factor.

  • Optimization of the asymmetric trapezoidal fin with various upper lateral surface slope is made using a two-dimensional analytic method. For the fixed fin base height, the optimum heat loss, fin length and effectiveness are represented as inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin base thickness, fin base height, fin shape factor and ambient convection characteristic number. For this optimum procedure, the optimum heat loss is defined as 95% of the maximum heat loss from the fin. One of the results shows that optimum heat loss and effectiveness seems independent of the fin shape factor while optimum fin length decreases almost linearly as the fin shape factor increases.

  • In this paper, the optimal position offset of optical phase conjugator (OPC) and the optimal dispersion offsets of fiber sections, which are alternating with the method for the symmetry of optical power and chromatic dispersion with respect to OPC, are numerically investigated as afunction of the WDM channel numbers. The WDM channel numbers are assumed to be 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24. The bit-rate of each channel is assumed to be 40 Gbps for all cases. It is confirmed that the optimal position offset of OPC and optimal dispersion offset of fiber section are gradually increased as the WDM channel numbers are gradually increased. But, the optimal dispersion values of fiber sections per OPC position offset of 1 km are independent on WDM channel numbers, because the optimal position offset of OPC and optimal dispersion offset of fiber section are simultaneously increased as the WDM channel numbers are increased. It is also confirmed that the applying of these optimal parameter values is efficient to WDM system with many channels rather than WDM with small channels.

  • A methodology based on the influence coefficient algorithm was established for the optimal calibration of QUAL2E reaction coefficients. It was applied to the stream sections from the Chungju Dam to the downstream end of the South Han River. A water budget analysis using the monthly records of reservoir inflows and outflows in 1990 was made to determine tributary inflows. Estimated tributary inflows were used, together with the monthly records of water quality measurements in 1990, for the calibration of reaction coefficients. Simulated quality constituents were chl.a. nitrogen cycles, phosphorus cycles. BOD and DO. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant reaction coefficients, and as a result 11 reaction coefficients were selected as calibration parameters. The influence coefficient algorithm applied to the calibration of QUAL2E reaction coefficients proved to be a useful one yielding a rapid convergence. Each calibration parameter converged to an optimum value within 3 iterations.

  • This study proposes a Load Factors-based Analysis Model of Optimum Reliability for the High way bridge, which is most common type of structural design, and also proposes the theoretical bases of optimum nominal safety factors as well as optimum load and resistance factors based on the expected total cost minimization. Major 2nd moment reliability analysis and design theories including both MFOSM(Mean First Order 2nd Moment) Methods and AFOSM(Advanced First Order 2nd Moment) Methods are summarized and compared, and it has been found that Lind-Hasofer's approximate and an approximate Log-normal type reliability for mula are well suited for the proposed optimum reliability study.

  • Optimum values of fin performance and dimensions for an annular fin with a rectangular profile and a pipe with variable inner radius are determined by using a variable separation method. The range of ambient convection characteristic number that results in optimum heat loss is listed. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum fin effectiveness, fin length, and fin height are presented as a function of the inner radius of the pipe, inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin volume, and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that the optimum heat loss, fin effectiveness and fin length increase linearly with the inner radius of the pipe when both the fin volume and fin-base radius are fixed.

  • In this paper, we present the regression analysis and design optimization for improving the permeability of 3D woven materials based on numerical analysis data. First, the parametric analysis model is generated with variables that define the gap sizes between each directional wire of the woven material. Then, material properties such as bulk modulus, thermal conductivity coefficient, and permeability are calculated using numerical analysis, and these material data are used in the polynomial-based regression analysis. The Pareto optimal solution is obtained between bulk modulus and permeability by using multi-objective optimization and shows their trade-off relation. In addition, gradient-based design optimization is applied to maximize the fluid permeability for 3D woven materials, and the optimal designs are obtained according to the various minimum bulk modulus constraints. Finally, the optimal solutions from regression equations are verified to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • In this study, we propose a new estimation method based on autocovariance for selecting optimal estimators of the regression coefficients in the simple linear regression model. Although this method does not seem to be intuitively attractive, these estimators are unbiased for the corresponding regression coefficients. When the exploratory variable takes the equally spaced values between 0 and 1, under mild conditions which are satisfied when errors follow an autoregressive moving average model, we show that these estimators have asymptotically the same distributions as the least squares estimators. Additionally, under the same conditions as before, we provide a self-contained proof that these estimators converge in probability to the corresponding regression coefficients.
