  • For the purpose of developing a high quality agricultural microbial inoculant, methods and materials for improving encapsulation were investigated. Preparation of capsule was conducted by improving extrusion system with micro-nozzle and peristaltic pump. The sodium alginate was selected because of its cheapness, stability of cells, and gel formation ability. The yields, physical properties and gel formation abilities of extractable alginate from sea tangle were investigated by hot water extractable and alkali soluble methods. The extraction yields of hot water extractable alginate (HWEA) and alkali soluble alginate (ASA) from sea tangle were 8 and 20%, respectively. The HWEA was almost not viscous even in 1.5% of the sample solution, whereas the ASA was very highly viscous in above 3% sample solution. The gel formation ability of each samples varied from 1.5% to 5% and the ASA showed a good gel formation ability at 3% solution as commercial alginate (CA). The soil microbial inoculant, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus plantarum and Geotrichum candidum encapsulated sodium alginate with starch and zeolite for stabilizer. The survivability of encapsulated soil microbial inoculant using alginate without stabilizer appeared to be 66, 52, 70 and 50%, respectively. Inclusion of starch and zeolite with alginate bead increased viabilities in Bacillus sp. and Geotrichum candidum by 81-83% and 89%, respectively.

  • Room-temperature operating CdZnTe(CZT) material is an innovative radiation detector which could reduce the patient dose to one-tenth level of conventional CT (Computed Tomography) and mammography system. The pixel and pixel pitch in the imaging device determine the conversion efficiency of incident X-or gamma-ray and the cross-talk of signal, that is, image quality of detector system. The weighting potential is the virtual potential determined by the position and geometry of electrode. The weighting potential obtained by computer-based simulation in solving Poisson equation with proper boundaries condition. The pixel was optimized by considering the CIE (charge induced efficiency) and the signal cross-talk in CT detector system. The pixel pitch was 1-mm and the detector thickness was 2-mm in the simulation. The optimized pixel size and inter-pixel distance for maximizing the CIE and minimizing the signal cross-talk is about $750{\mu}m$ and $125{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • In this work, to develop soil inoculant which maintains stable viable cells and normalized quality, studies on micro-encapsulation with bacteria and yeast cells were performed by investigating materials and methods for micro-encapsulation as well as variation and stability of encapsulated cells. Preparation of capsule was conducted by application of extrusion system using micro-nozzle and peristaltic pump. K-carragenan and Na-alginate were selected as best carrier for gelation among K-carageenan, Na-alginate, locust bean gum, cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), chitosan and gelatin tested. Comparing the gels prepared with Bacillus sp. KSIA-9 and carriers of 1.5% concentration, although viable cell of K-carragenan and Na-alginate was six times higher than those of other, Na-alginate was finally selected as carrier for gelation because it is seven times cheaper than K-carragenan. The gel of 1.5% Na-alginate was also observed to have the best morphology with circular hardness polymatrix and highest viable cell. When investigating the stability of encapsulated cells and the stabilizer effect, free cells were almost dead within 30 or 40 days whereas encapsulated cells decreased in 10% after 30 days and 15-30% even after 120 days. As stabilizer for maintaining viable cell, both 1% starch and zeolite appeared to possess the level of 70-80% cell for bacteria and yeast until after 120 days.

  • Recently, antiwashout underwater concrete has been increasingly used for marine foundations of long span bridges. However, to shorten the construction period of antiwashout underwater concrete used in marine foundations, high fluidity antiwashout underwater concrete should be manufactured largely improving fluidity than the previous one. Thus, the objective of this experimental research is to suggest optimum mix proportions of high fluidity antiwashout underwater concrete. For this purpose, concrete specimens containing ground granulated blast furnace slag were manufactured according to the dosage of antiwashout admixture for unit binder contents of 550 and 600kg/$m^3$, respectively. And then, their quality performances such as slump flow, setting time, underwater segregation resistance, and ratio of compressive strength were evaluated according to the related specification of Korea Concrete Institute. It was observed from the test results that the minimum dosage of antiwashout admixture was necessary to satisfy the related specification.

  • We propose a novel plane detection in disparity space and evaluate its performance. Our method simplifies and makes scenes in disparity space easily dealt with by approximating various surfaces as planes. Moreover, the approximated planes can be represented in the same size as in the real world, and can be employed for obstacle detection and camera pose estimation. Using a stereo matching technique, our method first creates a disparity image which consists of binocular disparity values at xy-coordinates in the image. Slants of disparity values are estimated by exploiting a line simplification algorithm which allows our method to reflect global changes against x or y axis. According to pairs of x and y slants, we label the disparity image. 4-connected disparities with the same label are grouped, on which least squared model estimates plane parameters. N plane models with the largest group of disparity values which satisfy their plane parameters are chosen. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate our plane detection. The result shows 97.9%와 86.6% of quality in our experiment respectively on cones and cylinders. Proposed method excellently extracts planes from Middlebury and KITTI dataset which are typically used for evaluation of stereo matching algorithms.

  • Though the Hough transform(HT) is a well-known method for detecting analytical shape represented by a number of free parameters, the basic property of the HT, the one-to-many mapping from an image spare to a Hough space, causes the innate problem, the sensitivity to noise. This basic problem also deteriorates the quality of detected lines and makes the detected line deviated from the real one or generates some bogus, multiple lines where only one real line exists. The size of Hough space also affects the quality of detected lines. In this paper, we analyzed the line distortions in the traditional Hough transform and showed that the distortions are relieved in the edge strength Hough transform(ESHT), which is a modified HT. However the usage of expanded edge and edge strength in ESHT can cause some new line distortions which do not exist in the HT. These new ones can be solved by a proper setting of decreasing and broadening parameter values and the optimal values can be determined only by some pre-determined values. We also illustrated several examples to show the distortion-decreasing property of ESHT.

  • This study aimed to optimize the preparation method of citron (Citrus junos Sieb.) beverages with hibiscus using response surface methodology (RSM). The experimental conditions were established using a central composite design with three independent variables as follows: ratios of citron (40~60%), citric acid (0.34~0.94%), and hibiscus (0.3~0.7%). The results indicate that an increase in the citron ratio contributed to increased sweetness and as the concentration of citron and hibiscus increased, the brightness of the citron beverage decreased and the yellowness increased. The citron ratio showed a significant correlation with the ABTS radical scavenging capacity. Among the 15 experimental groups, 4 representative samples showing statistical significance were selected, and sensory tests were performed, in comparison with commercially available products. As a result of the sensory test, four beverages prepared with the selected recipes showed higher preference than commercial beverages, and optimal recipe conditions were 40% citron, 0.34% citric acid, and 0.5% hibiscus.

  • Fertilization is essential to seedling production in nursery culture, but excessive fertilization can contaminate surface and ground water around the nursery. The objective of this study was to find optimal fertilization practice of container seedling production for reducing soil and water contamination around the nursery without compromising seedling quality. This study was conducted to investigate growth performance, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, and chlorophyll contents of Liriodendron tulipifera growing under three different fertilization treatments (Constant rate, Three-stage rate, and Exponential rate fertilization). Root collar diameter, height, and biomass of L. tulipifera were the highest at Constant treatment. Like growth performance, seedling quality index (SQI) were higher at Constant than at other treatments, but not significantly different among treatments. L. tulipifera showed good photosynthetic capacity at all treatments. Photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll contents were significantly lower at Exponential than at other treatments. Therefore, Exponential fertilization which is 50% fertilizer of other treatments would maximize seedling growth and minimize nutrient loss.

  • Humans have been breeding the mulberry silkworm for the long period of time to obtain silk fabric and nutrient-rich pupae. Currently, silkworm larvae, pupae, and silk-Fibroin hydrolysates are registered as food raw materials, while silkworm feces and Bombyx batryticatus are registered as Korean traditional medicines. Among sericulture products, individually recognized health functional food ingredients include silk-protein acid-hydrolysates for immunity enhancement, Fibroin-hydrolysates for memory improvement, and freeze-dried 5th instar and 3rd-day-silkworm powder for lowering-blood sugar. Recently, HongJam produced by steaming and freeze-drying mature silkworms were reported to have various health-promoting effects such as preventing the onset of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, enhancing gastro-intestinal functions, improving skin-whitening and hair growth, and extending healthspan. By consuming silkworm products with various health-promoting effects, it is possible to increase the healthspan of human beings, thereby reducing personal and national medical expenses, resulting in increasing the individual's happiness.

  • The aggregate gradation analysis is a study that evaluates the accuracy of a specific purpose for the aggregate gradation analysis results essential for construction-related major education. This study is to evaluate the effect of aggregate moisture content on aggregate gradation analysis. The change in the moisture content of the aggregate stored in the asphalt plant cold bin and stock piles was monitored for one year, and based on the results, a sample of aggregate with different moisture content was produced. The gradation curve for each aggregate sample was analyzed to evaluate the effect of aggregate moisture content on aggregate gradation analysis. As a result of the gradation evaluation, it was confirmed that as the moisture content increased, the particle size error for particles less than 5 mm increased in the gradation analysis of the oven-dried aggregate, and this error increased as the particle size decreased. In addition, for aggregate particles of 5 mm or more, it was confirmed that the error in gradation analysis rapidly decreased due to the increase in the moisture content. An analysis was performed on the effect of the error in gradation analysis on the management of hot-bin aggregates in asphalt plants. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the minimum aggregate size of the first hot-bin in a general asphalt plant was 2.38 mm or more, so the maximum gradation error due to the non oven-dry aggregate was less than 2%. Therefore, it seems possible to use the results of the gradation analysis of cold bin non oven-dry aggregate for quality management of asphalt mixture production.
