  • This paper develops a 2-D moving least squares(MLS) difference method for Stefan problem by extending the 1-D version of the conventional method. Unlike to 1-D interfacial modeling, the complex topology change in 2-D domain due to arbitrarily moving boundary is successfully modelled. The MLS derivative approximation that drives the kinetics of moving boundary is derived while the strong merit of MLS Difference Method that utilizes only nodal computation is effectively conserved. The governing equations are differentiated by an implicit scheme for achieving numerical stability and the moving boundary is updated by an explicit scheme for maximizing numerical efficiency. Numerical experiments prove that the MLS Difference Method shows very good accuracy and efficiency in solving complex 2-D Stefan problems.

  • In this paper, we report phase noise effects on SER(Symbol Error Rate) of MQAM(M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), DPSK(Differential Phase Shift Keying), OFDM(Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplex)-MQAM and OFDM-DPSK. SER of each modulation method has been quantified at the various offset frequencies of the local oscillator and compared with phase noise effects with the ideal cases, which have no phase noise, through the MATLAB simulation. And the ratio of modulation bandwidths to the SERs at the various frequency offsets for the above modulation methods have been analyzed for the system requirement of minimum phase noise characteristics.

  • In this paper, a higher harmonic control (HHC) methodology is applied to find the optimum input scenario for the vibratory hub loads reduction. A comprehensive aeroelastic analysis code, CAMRAD II, is used to model the HART (Higher-harmonic-control Aeroacoustic Rotor Test) II rotor, and parametric study is conducted for the best HHC inputs leading to a minimum vibration (MV) condition. The resulting outcomes are compared with the earlier HART II test results. It is indicated that the control input adopted in the MV condition showed less satisfactory results. The new MV condition obtained in the present investigation can achieve 45% lower vibration level than the baseline uncontrolled condition. The optimum HHC input results lead to 3/rev harmonic input having $0.8^{\circ}$ amplitude and $350^{\circ}$ phase angle. About 5% reduction in the required power is possible but accompanies with the increase of vibration level.

  • A technique used to induce maximum oscillating voltage in the BJT Clapp VCO is presented. The technique finds the optimal feedback capacitance values resulting in the largest oscillating signal swing across the resonator at a given bias state and the VCO's center frequency. By doing so, the presented technique attains the lowest phase noise which the BJT Clapp VCO can have. An analysis of the measurement results of the fabricated oscillators has verified that the VCO with the optimal feedback capacitance values actually exhibits the lowest phase noise.

  • The digital phase-locked loops(DPLL) is a circuit used for phase synchronization and has been generally used in various fields such as communication and circuit fields. State estimators are used to design digital phase-locked loops, and infinite impulse response state estimators such as the well-known Kalman filter have been used. In general, the performance of the infinite impulse response state estimator-based digital phase-locked loop is excellent, but a sudden performance degradation may occur in unexpected situations such as inaccuracy of initial value, model error, and disturbance. In this paper, we propose a minimum variance finite impulse response filter with optimal horizon for designing a new digital phase-locked loop. A numerical method is introduced to obtain the measured value interval length, which is an important parameter of the proposed finite impulse response filter, and to obtain a gain, the covariance matrix of the error is set as a cost function, and a linear matrix inequality is used to minimize it. In order to verify the superiority and robustness of the proposed digital phase-locked loop, a simulation was performed for comparison and analysis with the existing method in a situation where noise information was inaccurate.

  • The rotational stability of an interlocking caisson breakwater was studied. Using the analytical solution for the linear wave incident to the infinite breakwater, the phase difference effect of wave pressures in the direction of the breakwater baseline is considered, and Goda's wave pressure formula in the design code is adopted to consider the nonlinearity of the design wave. The rotational safety factor of the breakwater was defined as the ratio of the rotational frictional resistance moment due to caisson's own weight and the acting rotational moment due to the horizontal and vertical wave forces. An analytical solution for the rotational center point location and the minimum safety factor is presented. Stability assessment formula were proposed to be applicable to all design wave conditions used in current port and harbor structure design such as regular waves, irregular waves and multi-directional irregular waves.

  • It proposes the novel design conditions to maximize the power coupling of active directional couplers with mismatched access guides. To verify the validity and accuracy of the conditions proposed, a new coupling efficiency is defined and it depends on the reflection coefficients occurred at the discontinuous input/output interfaces. The numerical results reveal that the phase-matched condition and the minimum-gap condition for those couplers are no longer suitable to optimize the design parameters and a new criterion is needed.

  • A grating-assisted fiber coupler(GAFC), which consists of a thin-film waveguide with grating and circular optical fiber, is proposed and the optimized power coupling is evaluated by using a technique amenable to rigorous longitudinal modal transmission-line theory(L-MTLT). In addition, novel criteria to couple an optical signal incident through the grating waveguide to a single-mode optical fiber are proposed. The numerical result reveals that the optimized power coupling occurs at minimum-gap condition between rigorous modes rather than for the conventional phase-matching condition.
