Novel Taxa Belonging to the Class Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria, Isolated from the Sumunmulbengdui Wetland Area of Jeju Island (제주도 숨은물벵뒤 습지 서식 Alphaproteobacteria 및 Gammaproteobacteria 강에 속하는 신변이주의 특성)

  • In this study, samples were collected from the Sumummulbangdui wetland at the Halla Mountain in Jeju Island in order to isolate novel bacterial strain. Bacterial strains belonging to the class Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria were isolated after spreading samples onto solid agar media. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the strains assigned to the two classes were compared to those of type strains of the species. The strains that showed less than 98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the validly published species were considered to be novel species candidates. A total of 19 strains were regarded as novel strains which can be regarded as novel species candidates. In the Alphaproteobacteria, 6 novel strains were affiliated with the genera Novosphingobium, and Rhizobium. A total of 13 novel strains belong to Gammaproteobacteria that assigned to the family Moraxellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae were identified. Cultural, physiological, chemotaxonomic characteristics and fatty acids compositions have been determined for the novel species candidates, and the characteristics are described in this study.

A Ecological Study of Phytoplankton Community in the Geum River Estuary (금강 하구 기수역 식물플랑크톤 군집의 생태학적 연구)

  • After the construction of the Geum River estuary dam, we investigated the ecological property of phytoplankton community with physicochemical property in 9 stations of Geum River estuary 4 times seasonally in 2010 about the environmental changes through the change of phytoplankton. Physicochemical property seems to show eutrophication which developed from the tendency of accruing of the nutrients (those involved in intermittency of freshwater which flows from the dike and the surrounding cities), caused by the changing of tidal flow, the decreasing of the inflow of seawater after the construction of the Geum River estuary dam (dike). A total of 233 species of species composition of phytoplankton emerged, showing a highly increased result compared to that of the former research. The reason for the increase in number is considered as a phenomenon resulting from the mix of blackish and freshwater marine species in the flow of intermittency of freshwater discharge. Also, the standing crops of phytoplankton considerably increased compared to when the dike had not yet been built. Highly affected by the discharge of occasional freshwater, the diatoms of blackish water zone dominated in spring and winter, while freshwater species appeared to dominate in summer and autumn. The species diversity showed over 2.0 except in winter season. After a cluster analysis, the result showed that the Geum River estuary was influenced by runoff from cities like Gunsan, the sewage which flows from Gyeongpo River, and the intermittency of freshwater discharge from the Geum River estuary dam.

  • The vegetation of common Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) stands planted in Chonnam- province was investigated to obtain the fundamental informations for evaluation of suitable site and the improvement of managing method of the Cryptomeria stands in this region. The results investigated were summarized as follows; 1) The growth condition of common Cryptomeria planted 21-25-year-old stands was similar that of same species growing in Akidaken-district in Japan, while the growth condition of 51-58-year-old stands was not so good as that of Japanese. 2) Total number of plant species was 256. The number of floristic composition varied in the range of 42-99- species, which should be mere than those of Japanese. 3) The investigated sites were located in temperate southern part and in subtropic northern part of Korean peninsular. The types of understory vegetation were classified from I to IV class. 4) From the results of high max. possible diversity (H' max), and dominance (1-J') and from the low simple dominance (${\lambda}$) and evenness (J'), It could be concluded that vegetation was relatively in evenness. 5) From the low percent similarity, the specificity among the stands could be evaluated as considerable. 6) After the index of Morista, the 8th stand in Chang sung showed the generalized vegetation, while the 12th stand in Chang hung showed the specialized vegetation. 7) From the low values of Sneath-Sokal distance, the similarity among the stands investigated appeared very high.

The Diameter of Maximum Distended Urethra in Male Dogs (수컷 개에서 최대 확장된 요도의 직경)

  • This paper was performed to investigate the propensity of the diameter of maximum distended urethra from urethra to os penis in mature male dogs of 25 male dogs of different breeds. The measured sites of urethras were divided into 7 regions, i.e. prostate, membrane, isthmus, perineum, scrotum, prescrotum and os penis. By using the inflated balloon catheter filled with contrast medium, the maximum diameter of the distended urethras of each region was recorded and compared among regions. The mean diameter of the lumen from the prostatic urethra to the os penis urethra was gradually narrowed except for the isthmus portion, with a sense of resistance for retraction being noted at the level of ischiatic arch in 22 dogs. Proposed results from this should be utilized as a predictor of a treatment plan for the removal of urethroliths using an urohydropropulsion.

  • The objective of Distributed Parallel Computing is to solve the computationally intensive problems, which have several types of parallelism, on a suite of high performance and parallel machines in a manner that best utilizes the capabilities of each machine. In this paper, we propose a computational model including the generalized graph representation method of distributed parallel systems for speedup analysis, and analyze how the super-linear speedup is achieved when scheduling of programs with diverse embedded parallelism modes onto a distributed heterogeneous supercomputing network environment. The proposed representation method can also be applied to simple homogeneous or heterogeneous systems whose components are heterogeneous only in terms of the processor speed. In order to obtain the core speedup, the matching of the parallelism characteristics between tasks and parallel machines should be carefully handled while minimizing the communication overhead.

  • 보를 월류하는 흐름에 대하여 하류 수심이 보의 높이보다 낮고, 보 월류 후 수심의 공액수심보다 작거나 크고 같은 경우를 각각 자유도수와 수중도수라고 한다. 수중도수가 발생하는 경우 하류 수심이 보의 경사면을 따라 흐르는 하강류를 덮게 되며 유속을 감쇄시키기 때문에 최대 유속은 자유도수에 비해 매우 작게 발생한다. 그러나 수중도수는 자유도수에 비해 에너지 감쇄 효율이 낮기 때문에 도수구간의 거리가 증가하게 된다. 따라서 인명피해를 발생시키는 도수구간 재순환영역의 길이를 검토하는 것이나 보 하류 바닥보호공 길이 설계를 위해 수중도수에서의 흐름에 대하여 검토하는 것은 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 k-ω SST 난류모형을 이용하여 보 월류 후 발생하는 수중도수를 수치모의하고 평균흐름과 난류량의 종방향 변화에 대하여 검토하였다. 기존 실험수로에 k-ω SST 난류모형을 사용하여 모형의 적용성을 검토하였다. 다양한 하류 수심을 설정하여 평균흐름과 난류량에 대한 침수도의 영향 및 자유도수 계산결과와 벽면 제트 결과를 함께 비교하였다. 검토 결과 수중도수는 평균흐름과 난류량의 변화율이 자유도수보다 작고 벽면 제트보다는 큰 것을 확인하였다. 또한 침수도가 증가되면서 평균흐름과 난류량의 변화율이 작아지는 것을 확인하였다. 이것은 침수도의 변화에 따른 역압력경사의 차이에 의한 것으로 판단된다.

Short Reaction Mechanism for Premixed CH4-Air Flames at High Pressure (고압에서 예혼합 CH4-Air 화염의 축소 반응 메카니즘)

  • A short reaction mechanism for premixed $CH_4$-air flames at high pressure was developed using a reduction method based on the combined application of the simulation error minimization connectivity method and the iterative species-removal sensitivity method. It consisted of 43 species and 554 elementary reactions under the condition that it produces less than 5% of the maximum error. The flame structures obtained using a detailed reaction mechanism and the short reaction mechanism were compared for $CH_4$-air flames with various initial temperatures and equivalence ratios at high pressure, and the results were in good agreement. Therefore, the short reaction mechanism developed could reproduce the flame speeds, temperatures, and concentrations of major and minor species at high pressure.

  • In order to study the community structure and distribution patterns of primary producers and their relations to abiotic environmental factors, phytoplankton and environmental parameter were determined during the five times from October, 1989 to July. 1990. 159 taxa of phytoplankton have been identified and the most important species group is diatom which contributes to 70.4% of the total number of species. Ratios of phytoplankton group (neritic species, fresh water species, oceanic species) clustered by habitats were 52%, 18%, 12%, respectively, suggesting study area be the typical estuarine environment which is strongly affected by both fresh water discharge and sea water penetration. Species composition could be governed by the variations of salinity. the standing stocks of primary producer in the study area vary with space and time, showing close correlation with water transparency, and exhibit relatively larger than those of other coastal regions in the Yellow Sea. Spectransies diversity also showed large variation with space and time. According to the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two regions (inner part and outer part): in fall and winter, outer area affected by the oceanic water, but in spring and summer, inner estuarine area heavily influenced by fresh water.

Evaluation of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Effect in Osteosarcoma (골육종에서 술전 항암화학요법의 효과 판정)

  • Purpose: Various diagnostic imaging modalities have been used to evaluate the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for osteosarcoma early and noninvasively. We evaluated the effectiveness of imaging studies of plain radiographs and positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in predicting neoadjuvant chemotherapy effect for osteosarcoma and tried to establish a general principle in interpretation of PET/CT parameters. Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients who underwent two cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision for osteosarcoma were enrolled. There were 13 males and 5 females, with a median age of 19 (11-63) years. Fifteen patients of 18 had the American Joint Committe on Cancer (AJCC) stage IIB. They had plain radiographs and PET/CT before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The resected tumor specimens were pathologically examined to determine histological response grade using a conventional mapping method. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between histopathological necrosis rate, and radiographic finding category, post-chemotherapy maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), average standardized uptake value and metabolic tumor volume (MTV) as well as reduction rates of them. Results: Eight patients were good responders to neoadjuvant chemotherapy based on histological evaluation. Median SUVmax reduction rate was 73 (23-77) % in good responders and 42 (-32-76) % in poor responders. Median MTV reduction rate was 93.5 (62-99) % in good responders and 46 (-81-100) % in poor responders. While radiographic finding category was not different according to histological response (p=1.0), SUVmax reduction rate was significantly different (p=0.041). Difference in MTV reduction rates approached statistical significance as well (p=0.071). Conclusion: While radiographic finding category was not reliable to assess neoadjuvant chemotherapy effect for osteosarcoma, reduction rate of SUVmax was a useful indicator in this study. As parameters of PET/CT can be influenced by various factors of settings, different centers have to make an effort to establish their own standard of judgement with reference of previous studies.

Species Richness of Aquatic Insects in Wetlands along the Altitudinal Gradient in Jeju, Korea : Test of Rapoport's Rule (고도에 따른 제주 습지 수서곤충의 종풍부성 변화 : Rapoport 법칙의 검정)

  • The effect of altitude and latitude on biodiversity (or species richness) has been a topic of great interest for many biogeographers for a long time. This study was conducted to examine the dynamics of species richness of aquatic insects along the altitudinal gradient in 24 wetlands on Mt. Halla, Jeju and test the Rapoport's rule. The species richness of aquatic insects monotonically decreased with increasing altitude, showing a significant inverse correlation (r = -0.64). However, the pattern of species richness with altitude showed a hump-shaped relationship, with a peak in species richness at intermediate elevations when the effects of area were removed. The altitudinal range of species tended to increase with increasing altitude, as Rapoport's rule predicts. There was a positive correlation between the altitudinal range size and the midpoint of the range size (Median) except for Hemiptera (Odonata: r = 0.75, Hemiptera: r = -0.22, Coleoptera: r = 0.72, Total: r = 0.55). Also, the extent of average altitudinal range of high-altitude species was 904.3m, and it was significantly wider than a 469.5m of low-altitude species. Consequently, the species richness of aquatic insects in wetlands on Mt. Halla along the altitudinal gradient well supported Rapoport's rule.
