Scirtothrips Dorsalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) recently has been recognized as a major source of the pest damage in the citrus fruit orchards. So its arrival has been predicted periodically but it is difficult to identify adults of the pest with the naked eyes because of their size smaller than the 0.8mm. In this paper, we propose a method to detect candidate areas for automatic identification of Scirtothrips Dorsalis on forecasting traps. The proposed method uses a histogram-based template matching where the composite image synthesized with the gray-scale image and the gradient image is used. In our experiments, images are acquired by the optical microscopy with 50 magnifications. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, it is compared with the method we previously suggested. Also, the performances when the proposed method is applied to noise-reduced images and gradient images are examined. The experimental results show that the proposed method is approximately 14.42% better than our previous method, 41.63% higher than the case that the noise-reduced image is used, and 21.17% higher than the case that the gradient image is used.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of insecticide control system in eggplant greenhouse. In all treatments, the average densities of Frankliniella occidentalis and Tetranychus urticae were $0.3{\sim}1.8$ and 0.0 per leaf at 28 days after treatment, respectively. These results indicate the alternate application of Abamectin EC and Spinosad GW can be useful in control for F. occidentalis and T. urticae in eggplant greenhouse. The density suppression effect against Liriomyza trifolii and Trialeurodes vaporariorum was maintained for 28 days after treatment, but control effect was low at 28 days after treatment.
To control western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), a significant pest of peppers, the control effects of eco-friendly agricultural materials were tested when treated alone and in combination. The control effects of yellow sticky roll traps installed on the stem, predatory natural enemy (Hypoaspis miles) inoculated on the stem, and plant extracts (50% custard apple seed oil + 10% cinnamon extract) sprayed on the foliage were 45.3%, 36.6%, and 50.2%, respectively, when treated individually. Meanwhile, when three eco-friendly agricultural materials were comprehensively applied, the control effect was maintained between 62.4% and 80.9% compared to untreated conditions during the pepper harvesting season. These methods can be utilized for the eco-friendly control of western flower thrips in pepper greenhouses.
BACKGROUND: In organic agriculture, various cover crops have been used to control weeds. In this study, we investigated the suppressive effects of Vicia tetrasperma (L.) Schred (Eolchigi wandu) on the occurrence of major insect pests and their natural enemies in pepper. METHODS AND RESULTS: To estimate the effect of cover-crop on arthropod diversities and occurrences of insect pest in pepper. V. tetrasperma was sowed as cover-crop plot October, 2008 and 2009. Control plot was kept bare in winter season and mulched with black plastic-film before transplanting red pepper seedlings. Pepper seedlings, Capsicum annuum, were transplanted on the 19th of May, 2009 and on the 20th of May, 2010, respectively. Five Yellow sticky traps were set and changed at 7 days interval. Densities of aphids and thrips and damaged fruit rates by oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta, were counted. CONCLUSION(S): Populations of aphids, thrips and braconid wasps were maintained high on V. tatrasperma before transplanting pepper seedlings and in early season of pepper. However, the densities of aphids on pepper in the control plot were much higher than in the cover-crop plot in the early stage of pepper. Damaged fruit rates by both of thrips and oriental tobacco budworm were not significantly different between the two experimental plots.
Frankliniella occidentalis is attracted to flowers and is a major pest of chrysanthemums. Even when some chrysanthemum plants are not flowering, the ones that have already flowered attract F. occidentalis. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of chrysanthemum as a trap plant that attract F. occidentalis by using an olfactometer. The numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the flowers of pink, wihte and yellow standard chrysanthemums on a tray with wet paper during the flowering period were 18.4, 56.6, and 52.6 respectively; the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from leaves were 7.8, 16.6, and 15.4 respectively. the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the buds of pink, white and yellow standard chrysanthemums were 15.2, 45.8, and 41.6 respectively; the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the leaves were 2, 8.8 and 3.4 respectively. In the Y-tube olfactometer test, the number of F. occidentalis attracted to the 2-way arms of the Y-tube was not significantly different for the yellow, red, violet and white flowers. In the four-choice olfactometer test, when the same visual cues and odor cues were provided, the frequency of F. occidentalis was higher in the yellow (10.7) flowers than in the red (1.3), violet (3.7) and white (2.0) flowers. When visual cues with disturbed odor cues, F. occidentalis preferred yellow (10.0) color over red (3.3), violet (1.3) and white (3.0) colors. When the same visual and odor cues, except for yellow visual cues, were provided, F. occidentalis preferred white (8.3) color over red (4.7), violet (4.7) and yellow (2.0) colors. Therefore, F. occidentalis were attracted to buds before the flowering of chrysanthemum plants and attracted to yellow flowers after the flowering.
The yellow tea thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), has been regarded as a minor pest on citrus on Jeju Island. However, the damage of yellow tea thrips has gradually increased since 2007. This study was conducted to develop a forecasting model for generation peak time of S. dorsalis by using degree-days. Simple linear regression analysis was applied to determine the relationship between the generation number (x, dependent variable) and degree-days (y, independent variable). As a result, two regression models were established: citrus-based model (y = 310.9x + 69.0, $r^2$=0.99) and green tea-based model (y = 285.7x + 84.1, $r^2$=0.99). The models was fitted by independent data sets obtained from 2013 and evaluated using the technique of RSS (residual sum of square) and ${\chi}^2$-test. The green tea based-model showed a good fitting ability. The discrepancy between model outputs and actual data, and the practical application of models were discussed.

This studies by treatment of 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus and Banker plant with different number of eggs of O. laevigatus were conducted to develop new biological control of the western flower thrips (WFT) in chrysanthemum house. In this work, a treatment of 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus, Banker plant with different number of eggs of O. laevigatus and mixed treatment were applied. Initial WFT density per plant were 5 individuals. WFT density was measured every 7days after treatment for 7 weeks. Biological control of WFT by 25 individual adults of O. laevigatus and Banker plant with 25 eggs of O. laevigatus were applied 1 time and resulted in the high control value of thrips 91.8%. The population of WFT was kept under the economic threshold level (1 individual per plant). For the last three years we developed new banker plant system. This system is being developed to improve biological control of WFT on chrysanthemums.

Catch of garden thrips, Frankliniella intonsa, on sticky traps was assessed by color and height in commercial plastic vinyl house strawberry crops grown on 40-cm-high trellises. Yellow, blue and white sticky cards were tested for color attractiveness, and upper (50 cm), lower (10 cm above the floor) and ground were for height. At each height, trapped thrips on yellow, blue and white were significantly different. Blue sticky cards were significantly greater than traps on yellow and white. The trapped thrips were also significantly greatest at 50 cm above the floor, less at lower and ground. However, there is no significantly different the population of garden thrips on the flower in each tested site.
Insect pests attacking the leaf of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were surveyed in environmentally frendly leaf-lettuce-greenhouses in Hwaseong, Namyangju, and Suwon from 2003 to 2004. Sixteen insect species of eleven families in eight orders were collected in greenhouses. Among them, Acyrthosiphon solani, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Autographa nigrisigna were the most serious pest species because of their damage ratio was over 30%. Population of Acyrthosiphon solani showed the highest peak one or two times between mid-April and early June in both the second and the third cropping period. Frankliniella occidentalis reached the highest peak one or two times, the first peak between mid-June and the late July, and the second peak between the mid-August and the mid-October.Autographa nigrisigna reached the highest peak one or times between early June and late July and in the mid-August to late October. The highest peak occurrence of A. solami was observed in early June as many as 4,836 nymphs and adults per 100 leaves. And for F. occidentalis it was in early July occurring 437 larvae and adults per 100 leaves, for A. nigrisigna in early October occurring 42 larvae per 100 leaves. The density of F. occidentalis and its damage as well was greater in soil culture than in hydroponic culture, but in case of both A. solani and A. nigrisigna no such difference between cropping systems was found.
This study was carried out for looking into the status of susceptibility of vinyl house insect pests to insecticides. The Thrips (Thrips palmi and Frankliniela occidentalis), Mites (Tetranychus urticae), Aphids (Aphis gossypii) and Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) were captured at various areas where the host crop was being cultivated and the susceptibility level of each pest insect was investigated. The susceptibility of each pest insect varied by insect species and areas where they were caught. The tested insecticides showed good control effect to palm thrips in 2000, but in 2003 showed decrease of effect to them. Western flower thrips showed low susceptibility to neonicotinoids, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, but high to chlorfenapyr, spinosad, emamectinbenzoate and fipronil. Antibiotic insecticides, abamectin and milbemectin, and chlorfenapyr were very effective on mite control and dicofol still had good effectiveness to it despite of long year use. No aphid species showed resistance to pyrethroid and carbamate insecticides. Relatively new insecticides such as imidacloprid, spinosad, pymetrozine were effective to whitefly, but not were organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids.
