  • My artwork, '1000 years', in the form of an animation film has been exhibited in the '2011 Haein Art project' of a special exhibition at the Haeinsa monastery compound. The '1000 years' represents the marvels of sacredness and Buddhist symbols using the surrealist expression of computer animation. This paper would argue how Buddhist idea can be explored by the surrealist expression of 3D computer animation. In the light of this, animation and surrealist expression will be reviewed by the epistemological approach and based on this, I would attempt to reveal how this computer animation film represents the meaning of Buddhist symbols which exist in the monastery compound. This research is processed by the case study related to my artwork as the form of art practice based research.

  • This study aims to figure out diversity and complexity of modern design by analysing surrealistic characters of Jaime Hayon and Marcel Wanders design, who are working actively in diverse design fields including graphic design, product design, and space design. First fundamental theories of surrealism was reviewed, and structure for analysis was made by studying characters of design representation derived by surrealistic concepts. And then design projects in the fields of furniture and product design, interior space design, and project design that were performed by two designers after the year 2000 were analysed. Two designers assume critical attitudes in mass production of functional design which is made by only machines, and they have something in common pursuing creative and imaginative design by making unique artistic elements by using modern technology. In this way, they create surrealistic fantasy in their design. On the other hand Jaime Hayon and Marcel Wanders show interesting differences in modes of expression. Hayon creates unique and organic forms and characters based on his creative imagination, and he enjoys to express boldness and amusement. Wanders shows sophisticated and elegant duality by dramatic balance between intricate patterns and minimal forms. Both designers have important influences in modern design as creative leaders always pursuing new things and representing complex tendency of modern society.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the formative relationship between Surrealistic clothes and hat with the focus on the period from the 1990's to 2008 and to find out the development direction of next hat design. The method to analyze the relationship between clothes and hats was the formative analysis by Marian L. Davis and Marilyn R. Delong. Hat design of surrealism was cylindrical or tear drop in a shape according to the principle of $D{\acute{e}}paysement$ and Trompe l'oeil, and was similar with the Form of a jacket, a sleeve, or a skirt. In color, accent color coordination mainly appeared and sometimes contrast color coordination induced illusion effect. In material, a variety of materials were used according to the principle of $D{\acute{e}}paysement$ and Trompe l'oeil, and contrast was widely used like color. In Decoration, the decoration or pattern of clothes was intactly applied to hats. The results suggest that clothes and hat have an organic relationship, and a hat style is changed with formative elements of clothes.

  • Animation documentary is a hybrid genre that is newly highlighted with opposite properties. The actual world is reproduced with an unrealistic method in documentary aspect, but the objectivity of documentaries cannot be guaranteed as the boundary of actual pictures and digital images has become ambiguous. As the animation documentary by Ari Folman succeeded in 2008, the focus of this study is on 'how can fictional animations prove the authenticity of documentaries?' in which the study is mainly conducted in documentary aspect. For this, the researcher considers visual style research has important role in understanding and developing a new video genre, and asserts the necessity of research on reproduction image that is produced by the characteristics of animation which is produced in frame units. This paper has contents on the visual style of animation documentaries with pictorial reproduction methods in which animation images were classified into 3 styles based on previous research on animation documentary style. Visual styles are classified into actual image that is based on similarity with reality to deliver objective facts, image that is transformed through emphasis and omission which are factors of animations, and surrealistic image that reproduces non-visual regions such as illusions and the inner side of characters. Through this study that analyzes visual style types and characteristics, animation documentaries are expected to position as a hybrid genre that illustrates reality with a new method instead of being included in the existing reproduction method of documentaries.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify how modern formative art reflects surrealism and propose a Art Make-up expressed based on the trend. The study also aims at demonstrating the part that the Make-up based on surrealism is also an artistic being keeping pace with the trend of art. For the purpose, the study reviewed related theoretical backgrounds and works as manufactured. Based on these theoretical backgrounds, the author anufactured works of his own, realizing the combination between theoretical and practical aspects. Those works were motivated from existing surrealistic paintings or otherwise made surrealistically through creation by the author for himself. The works included , (Work 2-MAGRITTE's Expression>, , , and . Results of the study, which were obtained through manufacturing the works, can be described as follows. First, senses of modern formation and line were emerged by applying the materials and images frequently shown in surrealistic paintings to human bodies. Second, characteristics of the Art Make-up for artistic image were revealed, not limited to colors, expressions, subjects, techniques and materials. Third, an unlimited, interesting expression of the Make-up using a variety of materials became possible by applying extremely subjective, surrealistic paintings and images in various ways. This paper proposed that the Make-up should be a artistic image itself, not as a secondary means for an obvious expression of personal beauty which has been maintained since the ancient times. The researcher tried to put the Art Make-up into our daily life by making creative works which viewed and psychologically enjoyed by people and by proposing the works as sort of image theme to the spectators.

  • This study explores the ways in which depaysement and its dreams function as a hallucinative allegory on the basis of the spiritual freedom of surrealism in Luis Bunuel's films: "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" and "The Phantom of Liberty". In order to grasp the appearances of the sign in the scene of these films, it examines how he uses surrealism's dépaysement techniques such as the disposition of floating object, bipolarity, and physical contradictions of images. These emerging aesthetic views are as follows: the antipathy to reason, the critique of law and order, the aversion to ideology, and state apparatus. These finally aim at criticizing fundamental irrationality, thus paving a path for opening the possibility of liberation. He laid the foundation for a surrealist film by appropriatizing surrealist techniques to spread his claims. Therefore, this study argues that filmic scenes of dreams and hallucinations for a hallucinative allegory are closely related with the technique of depaysement network which summons the significance of surrealistic freedom in these films.

  • 'Delirious New York(1978)' of Rem Koolhaas is not only a historical book but a double code text writing the history of Manhattan in parallel to surrealism. Throughout this book, the surrealist terminologies such as unconsciousness, desire, paranoid, automatism, cadavre exquis etc, are widely used to explain the urban phenomena and buildings of Manhattan. Among these methods, in the fifth chapter, Paranoid critical method(PCM) invented by Salvador Deli, is explained in detail and adapted to Corbusier's project and other architects of Manhattan. Koolhaas connect PCM to the conceptual transposition and draft in architectural thinking. This thesis is to analyse the terms and methods of surrealism and how these methods are used to explain the urban phenomenon of Manhattan in 'Delirious New York'.

  • This study identified the characteristics of surrealistic art and examined the choreography method based on the representative work of choreographer William Forsythe. Forsyth developed into a ground breaking performing art through surrealistic characteristics and his own method, and sought to find a new body image based on this original choreographic approach. Through this, it was found that the destruction and dismantling of forms, which are surrealistic art characteristics, appeared as separate movements, space reconstruction, and special objects in the choreography method of Forsythe. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics and forms of surrealism and to identify the surrealistic elements that appear in William Forsythe's.

  • The aim of this study is to review the creative fashion installation of Henrik Vibskov, Danish designer. Its intention is to contribute useful information for more innovative fashion presentation. As a research method, document and case study were performed and his collections from 2004 F/W to 2016 S/S were analyzed. In fashion installation, the designer puts objects in meaningful spaces in order to convey a certain message, to make an integrated artwork, and to interact with spectator. It has been used in fashion exhibitions, as well as in the set design of fashion performance and fashion show. The results were as follows. Henrik Vibskov's fashion installation has three features, which are 1)conceptual theme approach that communicates a twisted and metaphoric message, with a poetic and interesting show title, 2) surrealistic scenography that plays with fragmentation of the human body, clustering of plastic and symbolic objects, innovative color transformations, and visual trickery between figures and the background, and 3) setting for multisensory performance that makes spectators interact by making artistic objects and surroundings, which stimulates the five senses. Henrik Vibskov's fashion installation can exist as an independent artwork, and not just as a supporting piece for a fashion show. It has both artistic and fashionable values, and can be an effective fashion presentation communicating his conceptual fashion themes.
