Shape from focus (SFF) is a technique used to reconstruct 3D shape of objects from a sequence of images obtained at different focus settings of the lens. In this paper, a new shape from focus method for 3D reconstruction of microscopic objects is described, which is based on gradient operator in Mathematical Morphology. Conventionally, in SFF methods, a single focus measure is used for measuring the focus quality. Due to the complex shape and texture of microscopic objects, single measure based operators are not sufficient, so we propose morphological operators with multi-structuring elements for computing the focus values. Finally, an optimal focus measure is obtained by combining the response of all focus measures. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm has provided more accurate depth maps than the existing methods in terms of three-dimensional shape recovery.
This paper presents a SFF(shape from focus) algorithm using a new focus measure based on higher order statistics for the exact depth estimation. Since conventional SFF-based 3D depth reconstruction algorithms used SML(sum of modified Laplacian) as the focus measure, their performance is strongly depended on the image characteristics. These are efficient only for the rich texture and well focused images. Therefore, this paper adopts a new focus measure using HOS(higher order statistics), in order to extract the focus value for relatively poor texture and focused images. The initial best focus area map is generated by the measure. Thereafter, the area refinement, thinning, and corner detection methods are successively applied for the extraction of the locally best focus points. Finally, a 3D model from the carefully selected points is reconstructed by Delaunay triangulation.

Knowledge of camera parameters, such as position, orientation and focal length, is essential to 3D information recovery or virtual object insertion. This paper analyzes the error sensitivity of focal length due to position error of feature points which are employed for self-calibration. We verify the dependency of the focal length on the distance from the principal point to feature points with simulations, and propose a criterion for feature selection to reduce the error sensitivity.

Shape form focus (SFF) is a technique that reconstructs 3D shape of an object using image focus. Although many SFF methods have been proposed, there are still notable inaccuracy effects due to noise and non-optimization of image characteristics. In this paper, we propose a noise filter technique for noise reduction and genetic algorithm (GA) for focus measure optimization. The proposed method is analyzed with a statistical criteria such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation.

In this paper, we propose a 3D shape restoration system which measures height and surface shape of transparent ITO glass and delivers errors in focal length and incident angle of laser beam to femto-second laser micromachining. The proposed system is composed of a line scan laser, a high resolution camera, a linear motion guide synchronized to image capturing, and a control station. Also, we define the sensitivity indices that represent a relation between measurement error and a position of a camera and scan laser, and utilize it for optimum design. The results of the proposed system are compared with results of SPM(Scanning Probe Microscope) and prove the usefulness of the system.
Currently, digital restoration has s long way to go. Character restoration is only used as a one-time event to restore the shape of a specific person, and building restoration is only composed of digital modeling rather than using the restored cultural assets as content. There is a limit to restoring even the story of a building or a person with the current restoration method alone. Therefore, this study analyzed the method and process of digital restoration of a 'historical and cultural space' encompassing spaces, people, and events, focusing on relationships. In order to derive digital restoration methods, the case of 'Latelier', an indoor theme park based on Gogh, was analyzed. According to the study, the relationship of the person important for digital restoration is important. Based on Gogh's relationship, the process was formalized in four stages for digital restoration: the preparation stage, the digital archive stage, the DB advancement stage, and the demonstration stage. The restoration of the story of the character through the relationship can be expected to converge the past and the present as a true historical restoration, and through this, it is expected that the innovative development of digital restoration can be achieved.

Acquiring high-quality images in control and measurement systems is one of the important factors. Among image acquisition technologies, SFF (Shape from Focus) is a technology for recovering a 3D shape by acquiring 2D images with different focus levels by moving an object at a predetermined step size along the optical axis. For SFF, when an object is moved at a constant step size, mechanical vibration, referred as jitter noise, occurs in each step along the optical axis. In this paper, a new state estimation filter is designed and applied for reducing the jitter noise. For the application of the proposed method, the jitter noise and focus curves are modeled as Gaussian function. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method.

A computerized tomography system was developed using the X-ray source that has diameter of 5 micrometer. The system is used for the nondestructive testing of specimens with diameter below 20 mm. The convolution back projection algorithm was adopted for the reconstruction of cross sectional image, and the shape of the X-ray beam was let parallel beam or fan beam to compare each resultant image. Our CT system was constructed to operate based on the personal computer. The sectional images of the fabricated specimens were reconstructed and analyzed. The reconstructed images well coincided with real images taken with optical microscope and gave us enough reports on the defects in the ceramic specimen. The resolution of the system regarded as about $20{\sim}30$ micrometers.

This study examined photogrammetric reconstruction techniques that can measure the original form of a cultural property utilizing photographs taken in the past. During the research process, photographs taken in the past as well as photograph on the internet of Soswaewon Garden in Damyang(scenic site 40) were collected and utilized. The landscaping structures of Maedae, Aiyangdan, Ogokmun Wall, and Yakjak and natural scenery Gwangseok, of which photographs can be taken from any 360 degree direction from a close distance or a far distance without any barriers in the way, were selected and tested for the possibility of reproducing three-dimensional shapes. The photography method of 151 landscape photographs (58.6%) from internet portal sites for the aforementioned five landscape subjects containing information on the date the photograph was taken, focal length, and exposure were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the majority of the photographs tend to focus on important parts of each subject. In addition, we discovered that there are two or three photography methods that internet users preferred in regards to each landscape subject. For the purposes of the experiment, photographs in which a single scene consistently appears for each landscape subject and it was determined that there was a high level of preference related to the photography method were analyzed, and three-dimensional mesh shape model was produced with a photoscan program to analyze the reproducibility of three-dimensional shapes. Based on the results of the reproduction, it was relatively possible to reproduce three-dimensional shapes for artifacts such as Ogukmun wall, Maedae, and Aeyangdan, but it was impossible to reproduce three-dimensional images for natural scenery or an object that has similar texture such as Yakjak and Gwangseok. As a result of experimentation related to the reconstruction of three-dimensional shapes with the photographs taken on site using a photography method similar to that of the photographs selected as previously mentioned, there was success related to reproducing the three-dimensional shapes of Yakjak and Gwangseok, of which it was not possible to do so through the photographs that had been collected previously. In addition, through comparison of past and present images, it was possible to measure the exact sizes as well as discover any changes that have taken place. If past photographs taken by tourists or landscape architects of cultural properties can be obtained, the three-dimensional shapes from a particular period of time can be reproduced. If this technology becomes widespread, it will increase the level of accuracy and reliability in regards to measuring the past shapes of cultural landscape properties and examining any changes to the properties.
This essay attempts a contrapuntal reading of Thomas More's Utopia. Contrapunctual reading, proposed by Edward Said. attempts to make a text speak across temporal, cultural, and ideological boundaries to a topic of present. I examine two opposite readings of Utopia around 2011 by both pro- and anti-Occupy Wall Street positions. On the one hand, the opponents of Occupy find its limits as a utopian social movement echoing in the fictional character of Hythrodaeus and the alternative society verbally sketched by him in Book Two of Utopia. On the other, Occupy's advocates read More's text as embodying its radial possibility. However, each shares the tendency to denounce Book Two, praising Book One in which Hythrodaeus vehemently criticizes England; they read Hythrodaeus not as an utopian idealist but as a social critic. The Occupy, as a result, is seen here as having an ambivalent relationship to utopianism. I reinterpret the radical possibilities of Book Two criticized by both pro- and anti-Occupy invocations of Utopia. Book Two provides a utopian space in which the existing social contradictions are cancelled, revealing the limits of the three partial utopias proposed at the end of Book One. Following Louis Marin's argument, I argue, the "utopic" space does not lie in the so-called ideal society described in the text but in the inconsistencies between the text's description(discourse) and topography(map). In Book Two the existence of a king is described, yet his space is not found in the topography of utopia; likewise market is described as existing at the center of a city, yet its space is not found either. These inconsistencies create a neutral space in which the ideological contradictions of the text are cancelled, and the space opens up the possibility of communal society beyond modern sovereign power and capitalism I argue this utopian dream needs to be summoned once again in our time as a compelling alternative to the corporate, capitalist order.
