  • In order to develop a universal cryogenic piston pump of small size for increasing utilization of liquid hydrogen, dynamic compression performance of piston pump were evaluated and improvements were also discussed for piston rod and piston tip. The cryogenic piston pump has crosshead structure and inclined cup shape piston tip. As the results, it was found that i) insulation of heat flow from piston-rod part is required for stable operation ii) improving the self-clearance adjustment effect of piston tip and reducing piston eccentricity were desirable to promote pumping pressure and operating range.

  • As an initial step to develop a liquid hydrogen pump of piston type operated under cryogenic and high pressure, leakage and piston head shape for the piston pump were discussed with temperature and pressure. As the results, the leakage depended on correlation among density, viscosity, clearance area by the low temperature. In order to reduce the leakage, it was found that the air-tightness can be improved by minimizing contact surface between piston and cylinder, and also increasing pressure in-cylinder can reduce piston clearance. Among the proposed piston shapes, D type piston shape had the most air-tightness. D type piston had smaller contact surface than other piston shape and easier expansion of cup shape by pressure. The leakage of D type piston shape was found about 7%, compared with A type piston shape. But it was required that analyze about vapor lock by friction and wear resistance.

  • Korea Gas Corporation(KOGAS) is a Liquified Natural Gas(LNG) supplier through out the Korea. LNG, which is imported wholly from foreign countries, is compressed 1/600 for easy transportation and is stored in a liquid state in the storage tanks at Incheon, Pyeongtaek and Tongyeong. At LNG receiving terminals, LNG is vaporized to natural gas before supplying to City Gas Consumer of Power Plant. The secondary pump is a equipment which compress LNG from 1- kgf/cm2 to 70 kgf/cm2. The secondary pump at Tongyeong LNG receiving terminal is consisted of two pumps in one underground PIT, and is connected to supporting structures. It is therefore expected that there is a vibration problem whit the pump and was found that high level vibration was occurred in a low frequency band($5^{\sim}10Hz$). In this paper, the vibration of secondary pump was analyzed, and the main cause of vibration was found out.

  • In this study, localized development of a submerged cryogenic pump for use in LNG containers is conducted with large-sized commercial vehicles as the target. The submerged pump installed in an LNG storage container is the key module that supplies fuel to the engine through the reciprocating motion of a piston. Research and development on 660-L fuel containers is performed herein. The target is to achieve a mileage of 600 km or more by applying it to major NGV vehicles worldwide. In this manner, the present study aims to verify the operating mechanisms of the major parts of currently advanced products through reverse engineering in the early development process and draw basic design data.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the basic design of a submerged cryogenic pump, which is a two stage impeller pump. We limited this study to the impeller design of the submerged pump. We calculated its velocity triangle based on the impeller blade configuration and, in order to check its natural frequency, we carried out a modal test using a finite element method (FEM) analysis. Basically, modal test results had quite similar to FEM analysis.

  • This paper presents safety analysis of LNG leakage in a prestressed concrete outer tank, which is strongly related on the leak checking effects of the PC structure with and without a residual compression zone based on the BS 7777 codes. The full containment type outer tank which is constructed by a prestressed concrete may be destroyed by leaked cryogenic fluids. The FE calculated results show that the total leak checking time of the PC structure with $10\%$ residual compression zone is about 9 days for $-162^{\circ}C$ liquids. But, three primary pumps in an inner tank may operate to send cryogenic fluids for 6 days, which are stored in an inner tank of $140,000m^3$ capacity This means that the prestressed concrete outer tank may be safe for $-162^{\circ}C$ cryogenic fluids leaked from the demolished inner tank.

  • Introduction: The most dramatic application of hypothermia in cardiac surgery is in deep hypothermic circulatory arrest(DHCA). Because man in natural circumstances is never exposed to this extreme hypothermic condition, one of the controversial aspects of clinical hypothermia is appropriate acid-base management($\alpha$-stat versus pH-stat). This study aims to compare $\alpha$-stat with pH-stat for: (1) brain cooling and re-warming speed during hypothermia induction and re-warming by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB); (2) cerebral perfusion, metabolism, and their coupling; and (3) the extent of development of cerebral edema after circulatory arrest, in young pigs. Materials & Methods: Fourteen young pigs were assigned to one of two strategies of gas manipulation. Cerebral blood flow was measured with a cerebral venous outflow technique. After a median sternotomy, CPB was established. Core cooling was initiated and continued until nasopHaryngeal temperature fell below $20^{\circ}C$. The flow rate was set at 2,500 ml/min. Once their temperatures were below $20^{\circ}C$, the animals were subjected to DHCA for 40 mins. During cooling, acid-base balance was maintained according to either $\alpha$-STAT or pH-STAT strategies. After DHCA, the body was re-warmed to normal body temperature. The animals were then sacrificed, and their brains measured for edema. Cerebral perfusion and metabolism were measured before the onset of CPB, before cooling, before DHCA, 15 mins after re-warming, and upon completion of re-warming. Results & Conclusion: Cooling time was significantly shorter with $\alpha$-stat than with pH-stat strategy, while there were no significant differences in rewarming time between the two groups. Nosignificant differences were found in cerebral blood flow, metabolic rate, or flow/ metabolic rate ratio between two groups. Temperature-related differences were significant in cerebral blood flow, metabolic rate, and flow/metabolic rate ratio within each group. Brain water content showed no significant differences between two groups.
