Technical Review of Specimens under Ultrasonic Fatigue Test (초음파 피로시험편 결정법의 연구동향)

  • An accelerated ultrasonic fatigue test(UFT) has been used for analyzing very high cycle fatigue( VHCF, $N_f$ > $10^7$). This study reviews how the test specimen is to be determined. We focus on UFT using a resonance of 20 kHz. The specimen geometry is determined by selecting test materials by using a dynamic Young's modulus and wavelength of 20 kHz. The dynamic Young's modulus is calculated at the resonant frequency. Through a resonant vibration test at 20 kHz, the length of the specimen is calculated. By determining the shape of the specimen, the stress during the UFT is calculated. The UFT results should be comparable at the test frequency and the specimen geometry obtained by the conventional fatigue tests.

  • An accelerated ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) was used for analyzing very high cycle fatigue (VHCF, $N_f$ > $10^7$) behaviors of a specimen with a test resonance of 20 kHz. Using the finite element method (FEM), the dynamic behaviors of the specimen was studied by calculating the stresses along its gauge portion, with displacement. The shape of gauge portion profile was assumed to be a hyperbolic according to the stress equation of the UFT. However, as the specimen used in the test had a circular arc profile, the FEM was used for studying the local stresses for two cases of the gauge profile. The results were compared with those obtain from the stress equation of the UFT. The dynamic behavior of the gauge portion could be understood for further comparison with the actual results.

  • A surface acoustic wave method for the evaluation of small fatigue crack initiated from a pit-type surface flaw is presented. In-situ ultrasonic experiments are performed for aluminum 2024-T3 alloy samples under the fatigue test. During the fatigue test, the surface acoustic wave reflection signal from the pit and crack is measured under different hold-stress levels. From the measured and predicted surface wave reflections the depths of fully and partially open cracks are determined and results are verified by comparing with SEM fractography The crack opening behavior of the fatigue crack is evaluated from the predicted effective crack depths. The method developed in this study can be applied to monitor and characterize crack initiation and propagation from pit-type surface flaws in the early stage of fatigue life.

  • In this study, a newly developed ultrasonic fatigue test was performed for durability assessment of polyoxymethylene engineering plastic, which has a high crystallization rate and degree of crystallization. Fatigue strength of POM (polyoxymethylene) was performed on a piezoelectric UFT developed by Mbrosia Co., Ltd(1), operating at a high frequency of 20 kHz. The test results showed a fatigue limit of 5.0~6.0 MPa under fatigue testing at R = -1, 20kHz; and, electron microscopy revealed the size effect by risk volume and fractured dimple structure after the coalescence of micro-voids through the crazing effect, which occurs during the failure of a polymer.

  • Very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of aerospace components has emerged much attention due to their long service life. In this study, a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue testing (UFT) system has been developed by Mbrosiatec Co., Ltd. to study the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hourglass-shaped specimens have been investigated in the range from $10^6$ to $10^9$ cycles at room temperature under completely reversed R = -1 loading conditions,. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that failures occurred in the entire range up to the gigacycle regime, and the fractures have beenfound to be initiated from the surface, unlike in steels. However, it was found from the SEM microgprahs that microcracks transformed into intergranular fractures. Thus, it can be concluded from according to the results that this test method can be applicable to commercialized automotive and railroad parts that require high cycle fatigue strength.

  • A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.

  • It is greatly expected that the technologies of durability enhancement and evaluation for the core structures of plant facilities, marine plant and bridge constructures will be greatly expanded in the plant industry fields. In this study, the actively ongoing applied cases were tried to be analyzed in the present domestic industry fields through the Ultrasonic Nanocrystalline Surface Modification (UNSM) and Ultrasonic Fatigue Test (UFT) technologies using ultrasonic elastic vibrational energy, and the new application technology to improve the durability of plant industry field, especially plant facilities, marine plant and core weld components of bridge constructures will be presented.

  • Material degradation due to corrosion fatigue was evaluated nondestructively using backward radiated Rayleigh surface wave. h corrosion fatigue test was carried out for the specimens made of thermo-mechanically controlled process steel in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution at $25^{\circ}C$. The backward radiation profile, which is the amplitude variation of backward radiated ultrasound according to the incident angle, of the specimens were measured in water at room temperature after the corrosion fatigue test. The velocity of Rayleigh surface wave, determined from the incident angle at which the profile of the backward radiated ultrasound became maximum, decreased for the specimen that had the large number of cycles to failure in the corrosion fatigue test. This fact implies that the corrosion degradation occurred at specimen surface in this specific test is dominantly dependant on the me exposed to corrosion environment. The result observed in the present work demonstrates the high potential of backward radiated Rayleigh surface wave as a tool for nondestructive evaluation of corrosion degradation of aged materials.

Fabrication of Mechanical fatigue flawed Specimen and Evaluation of Flaw Size (기계적 피로결함 시험편 제조 및 결함 크기 평가)

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Mechanical or thermal fatigue crack and intergranular stress corrosion cracking could be occured in the in-service nuclear power plant and mechanical fatigue crack was selected to study in this paper. Specimen was designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw under tensile stress. The number of cycles and the level of stress were controlled to obtain the desired flaw roughness. After the accurate physical measurement of the flaw size and location, fracture surface was seal-welded in place to ensure the designed location and site. The remaining weld groove was then filled by using gas-tungsten are welding(GTAW) and flux-cored arc welding(FCAW). Results of radio graphic and ultrasonic testing showed that fatigue cracks were consistent with the designed size and location in the final specimens.
