Problem Solving has been emphasized for recent decades, and many research case studies have been used to improve students' Problem Solving abilities. However, the gap of students' abilities can be easily shown after enrollment into school in spite of scholar's attempt to reduce students' level of differentiation. Besides, it is clear that teachers have been too readily assisting students' and not allowing them to acquire the process of Problem Solving, and this may be due to impatience. Therefore, students seem to show signs of the dependent tendency towards teachers and other materials. This tendency easily allows students' to depend on teaching resources without attempting any developmental mechanism of Problem Solving. The presupposition of this study is that every student must solve a problem without any assistance, and also this study is to provide new cognitive strategies for both teachers and students who want to solve their problems by themselves through the process of visible Problem Solving. After applying the student-based problem-solving model by this study, it was found to be effective. Therefore this will lead to the improvement of the Problem Solving and knowledge acquisition of students.
The purpose of this study is to review, through case study, how the use of web materials has influence on the improvement of self-oriented Learning in mathematics of primary school. This is one of the ways to improve classroom lectures suggested in the 7th National Standard of Curriculum. To accomplish this, the following three studies were conducted. First, a questionnaire concerning the improvement of self-oriented Learning Skill through the use of the materials on the web was designed and analyzed. Second, the activities of the class using the web materials were recorded and the study activities of the children were observed. Third, the process of writing notes about their study using web materials was analyzed though interviews after teaching and learning. Through these studies, it has been shown how web materials contribute to the improvement of self-oriented Learning Skill.
This study was to find characteristics of argumentation derived from a discourse in a math-gifted 5 grade class, which was held for finding a Pick's formula using Geoboard function of TI-73 calculator. For the analysis, a video record of the class, transcript of its voice record, and activity paper were used as data and Toulmin's argument schemes were applied as analysis standard. As a result of the study, we found that the graphing calculator helped the students to create an experimental environment that graphing a grid-polygon and figuring out its area. Furthermore, it also provided a basic demonstration through 'data->claim' composition and reasoning activities which consisted of guarantee, warrant, backing, qualifier and refutal for justifying. The basic argumentation during the process of deriving the Pick's theorem by the numbers of boundary points and inner points was developed into a 'collective argumentation' while a teacher took a role of a conductor of the argumentation and an authorizer on the knowledge at the same time.
This action research was carried out to help students learn fractions computation by making and using semi-concrete fraction manipulatives that can be used continuously in math classes. For this purpose, the researcher and students made semi-concrete fraction manipulatives and learned how to use these through reviewing the previously learned fraction contents over 4 class sessions. Afterward, through the 14 classes (7 classes for learning to reduce fractions and to a common denominator, 7 classes for adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators) in which the principle inquiry learning model was applied, students actively engaged in learning activities with fraction manipulatives and explored the principles underneath the manipulations of fraction manipulatives. Students could represent various fractions using fraction manipulatives and solve fraction computation problems using them. The achievement evaluation after class found that the students could connect the semi-concrete fraction manipulatives with fraction representation and symbolic formulas. Moreover, the students showed interest and confidence in mathematics through the classes using fraction manipulatives.
Mathematics is a discipline with a strong systemic structure, and learning deficits in previous stages have a great influence on the next stages of learning. Therefore, it is necessary to frequently check whether students have learned well and to provide immediate feedback, and for this purpose, intelligent tutoring system(ITS) can be used in math education. For this reason, it is necessary to reveal how the intelligent tutoring system is effective in personalized adaptive learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the functions and applications of intelligent tutoring system for personalized adaptive learning in mathematics. To achieve this goal, literature reviews and surveys with students were applied to derive implications. Based on the literature reviews, the functions of intelligent tutoring system for personalized adaptive learning were derived. They can be broadly divided into diagnosis and evaluation, analysis and prediction, and feedback and content delivery. The learning and lesson plans were designed by them and it was applied to fifth graders in elementary school for about three months. As a result of this study, intelligent tutoring system was mostly supporting personalized adaptive learning in mathematics in several ways. Also, the researcher suggested that more sophisticated materials and technologies should be developed for effective personalized adaptive learning in mathematics by using intelligent tutoring system.
The purpose of this study is to develop the integrated curriculum for gifted elementary students based on ICM (Integrated Curriculum Model) and to apply it for analysis of the relationship between creativity and creative problem solving skills. An integrated curriculum for gifted students attending a university-affiliated institute was developed and applied to twenty mathematically gifted 5th and 6th grade students. TTCT language test and CAT test for students' products from activities were conducted. In addition, tape-recorded group discussions and activities during instruction, and interview with students and teacher, activity sheets were analyzed. As results, their language abilities shown TTCT test have been improved. Furthermore, the correlation between the test results of automata and language creativity, the average of two projects and language creativity, and future problem solving and the average of TTCT showed significant correlations. Results showed the gifted students' understanding of high level concepts and cooperation among groups were needed in order to improve creative problem solving. It suggested a further study research the integrated curriculum applying creativity and giftedness to real-life problem situations for gifted students to make them grow into essential competent persons in the future.
Recently, the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum has established achievement standards for equal sign and equality, and efforts have been made to examine teaching methods and student understanding of relational understanding of equal sign. In this context, this study conducted a lesson that emphasized relational understanding in an introduction to equal sign, and compared and analyzed the understanding of equal sign between the experimental group, which participated in the lesson emphasizing relational understanding and the control group, which participated in the standard lesson. For this purpose, two classes of students participated in this study, and the results were analyzed by administering pre- and post-tests on the understanding of equal sign. The results showed that students in the experimental group had significantly higher average scores than students in the control group in all areas of equation-structure, equal sign-definition, and equation-solving. In addition, when comparing the means of students by item, we found that there was a significant difference between the means of the control group and the experimental group in the items dealing with equal sign in the structure of 'a=b' and 'a+b=c+d', and that most of the students in the experimental group correctly answered 'sameness' as the meaning of equal sign, but there were still many responses that interpreted the equal sign as 'answer'. Based on these results, we discussed the implications for instruction that emphasizes relational understanding in equal sign introduction lessons.
This research was designed to investigate the possibility to teach function concept and graph representation of functions in explicit manner toward at elementary level. Eight class-hours instruction was given to four Grade 5(age 11) students, and dynamic geometry software GSP was partially used in the class. Results indicate that the students could conceptualize the function relation, interpret linear function graphs, recognize the meaning of their slopes, and discuss the relationships among linear graphs and real life situation. Results also indicate that GSP helped students to recognize the relation between dots and the linear graph clearly and that GSP-line graph did decisive role for children to understand the meaning of graph representation of function.
The purpose of this study is to explore how units-coordination ability is related to understanding fraction concepts. For this purpose, a teaching experiment was conducted with one fourth grade student, Eunseo for four months(2019.3. ~ 2019.6.). We analyzed in details how Eunseo's units-coordinating operations related to her understanding of fraction changed during the teaching experiment. At an early stage, Eunseo with a partitive fraction scheme recognized fractions as another kind of natural numbers by manipulating fractions within a two-levels-of-units structure. As she simultaneously recognized proper fraction and a referent whole unit as a multiple of the unit fraction, she became to distinguish fractions from natural numbers in manipulating proper fractions. Eunseo with a reversible partitive fraction scheme constructed a natural number greater than 1, as having an interiorized three-levels-of-units structure and established an improper fraction with three levels of units in activity. Based on the results of this study, conclusions and pedagogical implications were presented.

This study was investigated to examine the effects of writing activities based on Polya's Problem Solving Stages on Learning Accomplishment and Attitudes. A total of 54 students were selected from two Grade 6 classes of P Elementary School in G City to form an experimental group(n=27) and a control group (n=27). The experimental group was applied to a class which was creating writing activities according to Polya's Problem Solving Stages to problem solving and inquiry activities. The control group was taught by the traditional method to the same activities. The five questions for each area were selected as a descriptive assessment of the second semester of Grade 5 in the area of the Academic Achievement pre-test, developed by the G Education and Science Research. The post-test was selected by a descriptive assessment of the content of the first semester in Grade 6. The same questions were posed for both the pre-test and the post-test of the Mathematical Attitudes assessment. We examined the pre-test at the beginning of the school term, then the students were re-examined after one semester, using the same questions as the pre-test. This research showed that there was a meaningful difference in Learning Accomplishment as a result of T-test in the 5% level of significance. Secondly, there was a meaningful difference in the Mathematical Attitudes as a result of T-tests. It shows that writing activities based on Polya's Problem Solving Stages have an influence on improving Learning Accomplishment and Attitudes.
