The Effect Of Teachers' Reflection For Mathematics Classroom Instruction - Focused on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks - (교사의 수업반성이 수학 수업에 주는 영향 - 수학적 과제의 인지적 수준을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to offer the implication for elementary school mathematics teaching by analyzing teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks they give in class. During the setup phase and the implementation phase in math class, the researchers analyzed the change of cognitive demands on mathematical tasks and the factors which had influence on such changes. After teachers' reflection on teaching, the researchers analyzed the change of cognitive demands on mathematical tasks and the factors which had influence on such changes in math classes. As a result, before teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks, the higher-level demands of mathematical tasks had a tendency to decline. However, after teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks, higher-level demands of mathematical tasks were maintained.

An Analysis of Using TI-73 Calculator for the 5th Grade Students in an Elementary Math Gifted Class (TI-73 계산기를 활용한 초등 5학년 수학 영재 학급의 수업 분석)

  • In this study, lessons on coordinate, percentage, and factorization in prime factors were taken with TI-73 calculator for 20 elementary school students in the 5th grade math gifted class in Pohang city. Through these lessons, the researcher examined with cases how using the calculator would influenced the lessons for the gifted students, and attempted to obtain implications on using calculators as learning tools in class. Activity sheets were made for this study and a 80-minute lesson was held three times for three weeks. In order to collect data, the class was recorded on videotape, the students were interviewed, and documents used in the class were collected. Then all the data were transcribed. Data analysis was completed through several readings of transcripts and main themes were derived by classifying, comparing, and contrasting coding. As a result of the study, the calculator played a role the tool as the mediation to communicate and the challenge their solvable tasks beyond the limitation of paper and pencil environments. But, in using the calculator, there was differences in gender between boys and girls. Above all, to enter commands into the calculator resulted in obstacles for learning process.

Comparison of Pre- and In-service Elementary School Teachers' PCK about Questioning in Mathematics Class (수학적 발문에 대한 초등학교 예비교사와 현직교사의 PCK 비교)

  • This study intended to draw some suggests for the development of mathematics teachers' expertise through the comparison research of pre-service and in-service teachers' PCK about questioning in elementary mathematics class. For this purpose, questionnaire survey was conducted to some pre-service and in-service teachers about the PCK concerning the way how questioning during mathematics class. This survey revealed the following implications. First, from the perspective of mathematics classroom, it is still more important the practical knowledge about how to teach which is evolutionally developed passing through the experience and currier of teaching than theoretical knowledge itself. Comparing the teachers' PCK about the two related knowledge types of mathematics contents, in case of procedural knowledge related PCK it was more asked of teachers' expertise than the case of conceptual knowledge related PCK. Thirdly, in case of learners' incorrect answer, for the desirable teaching it should be a questioning focused on whether there being or not the systematic among the learners' incorrect answer, and in case of appreciating the learners' understanding about the presently taught contents the questioning should be constructed considering the relevant contents early learned.

Effectiveness of G-Learning Math Class in Increase of Math Achievement of K-5 Students in USA (G러닝 수학 수업이 미국 초등학교 5학년 학생의 수학 성취도 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study suggests effects and procedure of G-Learning math class which had implemented toward a class of K-5 for 6 weeks in La Ballona elementary school located in Culver City, LA in USA. For designing G-Learning math class, developing the G-Learning contents, constructing teaching and learning model, publishing the teacher and student's book and conducting teacher training were carried out. As for the results, the achievement score of G-Learning class rose 12 points which marked higher improvement than the compare class. Also in G-Learning class, the score of 1/3 lower achievement group increased 22 points and 1/3 higher achievement group rose 9 points with statistical significance. Moreover, after G-Learning math class, interest and awareness to effectiveness toward G-Learning math was positively increased.

  • The aim of this study was to develop and validate a mathematics teaching efficacy scale for South Korean Elementary Teachers. The sample was consisted of 300 elementary teachers in South Korea. A total of 13 items were developed and examined for internal consistence. The results of this study showed that the proposed scale was appropriate to represent mathematics teaching efficacy of elementary teachers.

Improvement of Elementary Instruction via a Teacher Community: Focused on the Implementation of Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (교사 공동체를 중심으로 한 초등 수학 수업 개선: 효과적인 수학적 논의를 위한 5가지 관행의 적용)

  • An effective teacher community helps the participating teachers improve their instructional quality. This study reports a teacher community consisting of 15 elementary school teachers and one teacher educator. This paper analyzed 15 mathematics lessons in which the teachers implemented the five practices for orchestrating productive mathematics discussions by Smith and Stein (2018) based on the grade-specific discussions as well as the whole community's discussions. The results of this study showed that the overall levels of each practice either increased gradually or maintained at the highest Level 4, as mathematics lessons had been implemented. Specifically, the following practices were quite successful: setting goals for a lesson, selecting an appropriate task, anticipating student responses, and selecting student solutions. However, both sequencing and connecting student solutions were implemented at various levels. Monitoring student work tended to remain at Level 2 which included incorrect implementation of the practice. This paper closes with implications related to the skillful implementation of the five practices through a teacher community.

An Analysis of a Teacher's Transformation Knowledge in Elementary Mathematics Teaching (초등 수학 수업에서 발현되는 교사의 변환 지식 분석)

  • Teacher knowledge needed for teaching is bound to be revealed in teaching the subject matter in relation to the given instructional context. Given this, recent studies on mathematics teacher knowledge tend to analyze actual Mathematical Knowledge in Teaching [MKiT]. This study focused on the dimension of transformation and its related codes in Knowledge Quartet, which has been recognized as a MKiT framework, and analyzed a Korean teacher's transformation knowledge revealed in her elementary mathematics teaching. The analysis showed that the codes related to the dimension of transformation were useful in analyzing teacher knowledge in the Korean context. However, a few codes need to be revised or added for more suitability. On the basis of these results, this paper closes with implications for analyzing teacher knowledge in mathematics teaching.

수학적 창의성 신장을 위한 교사의 발문 특성 연구

  • 학습자들이 미래 사회에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해서는 기존의 지식을 축적, 활용하는 것뿐만 아니라, 새로운 행동 양식을 개발하고 환경의 변화에 적절히 대응해 나갈 수 있는 능동적인 자세와 상응하는 창의적인 힘을 키우기 위해 '창의성 신장'이 강조되고 있다. 선행연구에 따르면 교사의 발문이 학생의 수학 학업성취도, 수학적 사고력향상, 수학에 대한 관심과 흥미에 긍정적인 영향을 주고 있음을 시사하고 있지만, 수학교육에서 창의성 신장을 위한 교사의 발문에 관련한 구체적인 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 2007 개정 교육과정에서 강조하는 수학적 의사소통능력과 창의성, 수학적 사고력 신장에 기여하고 학생들의 수학과 학업성취도 뿐만 아니라 정의적 영역(흥미, 태도, 호기심 등)의 향상을 도모할 수 있는 교사 발문의 특성 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 도형영역 수업에서 교사의 발문 특성을 분석하고, 수업에서 사용되는 자료와 수업에서 학생들의 수학적 창의성 신장을 효과적으로 도울 수 있는 교사 발문의 특성을 연구하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구를 위하여 우리나라 2007개정 교육과정 수학과 4학년 1학기 도형 영역 관련 단원인 삼각형을 주제로 교과서에서 제시한 발문 내용을 분석하고, 실제 교수-학습 과정에서의 교사 발문의 실태를 알아보고자 제주교육인터넷방송국에 탑재되어 있는 7차 교육과정 4학년 1학기, 2학기 도형 관련 3개의 수업을 관찰 및 분석하였다. 이를 통해 수학적 창의성 신장을 위한 교사 발문의 특성을 수학적 창의성의 하위요소별로 나누어 분석하였다. 학생의 창의성 신장을 위해서 교사는 학생들이 다양하게 사고할 수 있도록 자극할 수 있는 발문을 준비하고, 수업 진행시 하나의 발문에 대해 다수의 반응을 유도하고, 학생의 응답에 대해 단순한 '맞다, 틀리다'의 판단을 내리기 보다는 그 근거를 설명할 수 있는 기회를 마련해 주어 학생이 수학 수업에 흥미를 갖고 스스로 참여할 수 있도록 유도해야 함을 제안하였다.

An Analysis on the Motivations in the Elementary Mathematics Lessons (초등수학 수업의 동기 유발 방법 분석)

  • This study was to analyze motivations in the mathematics lessons from the perspectives of preservice elementary school teachers. The participants were three groups of 62 preservice elementary teachers who were sophomore or junior students in Seoul city in Korea. Two groups of the students were enrolled at teaching and learning mathematics courses, whereas one group of students were at mathematics problem solving course. They were randomly assigned to elementary schools for their student teaching. They were required to observe mathematics lessons focusing on motivations during their participating at the two-week student teaching period. The preservice teachers were asked to observe and submit the reports of the observation in the mathematics lesson. The researcher suggested a guideline of observation and analyzed the reports according to the categories those were suggested in the guideline. The results of the analysis on the reports are summarized as follows. First, the preservice elementary school teachers considered the purpose of motivations as attracting students' interest. Second, the major ratio of motivations were attracting students' attention in the mathematics lessons. Third, the duration average time was 5 minutes 50 seconds and only limited materials for the motivations. At last, most mathematics lessons need to stimulate students' curiosity that fits to the objectives of the lessons. The researcher suggests that we need to develop various motivations in mathematics lessons with which teachers should subtlely connected to the objectives of the lessons.
