  • The purpose of this study is to investigate gifted students in elementary mathematics how they understand of situations involving multiplication and concepts of multiplication. For this purpose, first, this study analyzed the teacher's guidebooks about introducing the concept of multiplication in elementary school. Second, we analyzed multiplication problems that gifted students posed. Third, we interviewed gifted students to research how they understand the concepts of multiplication. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the concept of multiplication was introduced by repeated addition and times idea in elementary school. Since the 2007 revised curriculum, it was introduced based on times idea. Second, gifted students mainly posed situations of repeated addition. Also many gifted students understand the multiplication as only repeated addition and have poor understanding about times idea and pairs set.

  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

  • From the perspective of science gifted education, the successful intelligence theory is a means to understand how the gifted education curriculum reflects the characteristics of science gifted students. The purpose of this study is to investigate if the successful intelligence is fully reflected in the teaching materials of two gifted education centers (GECDOE: Gifted Education Center affiliated with District Office of Education, GSEIU: Gifted Science Education Institute attached to University). For this study, we selectively used 143 (GECDOE) and 134 questions (GSEIU) from the teaching materials of two gifted education centers. Those questions is analyzed through the semantic network analysis method. The results are as follow. First, the teaching materials of two gifted education centers are not evenly reflected in the successful intelligence, such as analytical ability, creative ability, and practical ability. Second, the teaching materials of two gifted education centers intensively demands analytical ability for students such as 'identify problem', 'represent and organize information', and 'additional prompts for analytical thinking'. Third, the teaching materials of two gifted education centers are presented to students without linking each frame of successful intelligence to one another. As the gifted students are quick to learn and show a preference for more complex thinking, it is necessary to develop teaching materials to experience the various abilities and promote integrated thinking according to the level of the gifted students. In this respect, this study is expected to be used as useful information for developing teaching materials to support customized education for gifted students.

Comparing Types and Creativity Level of Scientific Humors Made by General and Scientifically-Gifted Elementary Students and Their Perceptions for Educational Benefits of Making Scientific Humor (초등 일반 및 과학영재 학생의 과학 유머 유형과 창의성 수준, 과학 유머 만들기의 교육적 효과에 대한 인식 비교)

  • This study compared the types and creativity level of scientific humors made by general and scientifically-gifted elementary students and their perceptions for educational benefits of making scientific humor. To do this, fifth graders (n=42) at an elementary school and fifth graders (n=38) at a gifted science education institutes in Seoul were selected. Scientific humors made by the students were analyzed and compared according to their types and creativity levels in scientific humor. The students' perceptions for educational benefits of making scientific humor were also analyzed and compared through a questionnaire. Analysis of the results reveal that there were some differences in the incidence rates in 'form' aspects (e.g., generative and descriptive forms) and 'content' aspects (e.g., inclusion of curriculum, scientific discipline, type in use of scientific knowledge, and nature of the situation) between the scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. The scientifically-gifted students also made more fluent, flexible, and original, but similarly useful scientific humors than the general students. Most of general and scientifically-gifted elementary students perceived positively the educational benefits of making scientific humor based on various cognitive and affective aspects.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate for gifted elementary students in science the feature of character, life goals and happiness, and the effect relationship on happiness based on the relationship between factors. For this, independent t-test, multi-linear regression analysis and hierarchical regression were conducted. The results from this study are as follows. First, scientifically gifted elementary students show higher level of responsibility, ethics, positive self-understanding and contribution goal, but lower in material and image goal than general students. Second, character, life goal and happiness are correlated. Third, female students rather than male students and students with consideration/service character have intrinsic goals. While, the students with higher level of consideration/service and lower level of sympathy show extrinsic goals. The higher the level of consideration/service and the lower of self-control they have the higher their happiness are. Fourth, as scientifically gifted elementary students have more consideration and relationship goal, their happiness go up. While, the more they have self-growth and material goal, the lower the happiness. Fifth, the character of scientifically gifted elementary students is the factor that explains the effect on happiness more easily than life goal, relatively. The factor of life goal mediates the consideration/service and happiness. In conclusion, I hope that this study contribute to raise the happiness of scientifically gifted elementary students, and considerate the character education and counseling program for character development.
