To supply basic data for systemic nutrition education, perception of nutrition education and nutrition knowledge was investigated in elementary school students (4~6th grade) in Chungnam province. Forty-six percent of students had a normal level of interest in nutrition, and 43.8% of students had a normal level of nutrition knowledge. Male students (56.1%) and female students (43.7%) wanted nutrition education via lectures in class (p<0.001), with a significant difference based on gender. In addition, most students wanted 'cooking' as nutrition education content, with a significant difference based on gender (p<0.001). Approximately 59% of students (boys 53.7% and girls 64.6%) responded that the reason not to practice the contents of nutrition education is 'not interested' (male 44%, female 34.1%) (p<0.05). For necessity of nutrition education, 38.1% of subjects answered 'normal', and 42.8% of students responded that nutrition education is not helpful since there is no interest. On the contrary, necessity of nutrition education was recognized by 30.8% of male students and 30.8% of female students for prevention of obesity and health life with a balanced diet, respectively. Students (66%) wanted a nutrition teacher, and 33.2% of male students wanted nutrition education once a month, whereas 34.5% of female students wanted it once a week (p<0.01). And 54.8% of students responded that current frequency of nutrition education is adequate. The average score of nutrition knowledge for female students was higher than that of male students, and a higher grade received a higher score of nutrition knowledge. The level of nutrition knowledge was not relevant to the actual score of the individual. Based on this result, it is necessary to activate and expand nutrition education in elementary schools to emphasize the importance of nutrition education. Additionally, future nutrition education should be more available to practice in life as well as improvement of nutrition knowledge. Investigation into nutrition knowledge according to gender and grade is necessary for continuous and systemic nutrition education.
This study was based on the information provided by 1,180 elementary school children (630 boys and 550 girls) of 5th or 6th grade in Changwon and Gimhae of Gyeongnam province. They were asked about perception and preference for rice foods by questionnaires. The purpose of this survey was to find the way of encouraging rice intake and preference which is currently getting lower because of increasing simple westernized eating habits, and to provide basic information needed for inheriting and improving our traditional rice-based dietary culture. The results are summarized as follows. Most of subjects (91.2%) thought that steamed rice is better than bread for own health. The reason why they chose to eat steamed rice was 'because it is good for health' (61.2%), and 'because it is staple food item that we eat everyday' (26.4%). Seventy one percent of girls and 52.7% of boys gave the answer 'because it is good for health' as the reason for eating steamed rice. The reasons for the importance of the rice-based dietary culture were 'because of its superior nutritional value' (40.8%), and 'because it is our traditional eating culture' (28.6%). While significantly more girls (42.9%) answered as 'because of its superior nutritional value', more boys (39.0%) answered as 'because it is our traditional dietary culture'. More boys (59.0%) preferred noodles than girls' (54.7%), and fruits were preferred more by girls than boys as substitution foods for steamed rice showing significant difference (p<0.01). They wanted rice product developed in the forms such as Ssalamyun (29.8%), Ssalmandoo (24.1%), rice noodles (20.6%), and rice bread (15.6%). The preference score on rice products of subjects was one dish meals (4.27) and drinks (4.26), snacks (3.72), convenience foods (3.61), and steamed rice (3.44) in order. Preferred food showing points over 4 were Ssalbap (plain steamed rice) (4.29) in steamed rice type food, Kimchi bokeumbap (4.56), Bokeumbap (4.55), Bibimbop (4.45), Omelet rice (4.44), Kimbap (4.42), Ddukkuk (4.33), Curried rice (4.33), Jajangbap (4.28), and Ddukmandookuk (4.24) in one dish meal type food, Samgak Kimbap (4.26) in convenience type food, Songpyun (4.48), Injulmi (4.18), Teokbokki (4.71), Ddukkochiguyi (4.46), and rice cookies (4.24) in snack type food, and Shikhye (4.61) and Misugaru (4.28) in drink type food. Based on these results, it may be said that elementary school children think the rice-based diet is good for health and this dietary culture should be inherited and developed not only in a traditional aspect but also in a nutritional aspect. Therefore, more studies are needed to develop various forms of rice food products and cooking recipes.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of contact with the elderly in a daily life on children's ageist attitude. Acknowledging the people's tendency to report in socially appropriate ways to the explicit attitude measurement, implicit measurement is introduced, and relation with the daily contact with elderly(DCE) is analyzed. The research question are as follows: 1) Are these two attitudes explained by different factors? 2) Can DCE alleviate both children's implicit and explicit ageist attitude? 3) How do the contact with grandparent and neighboring elderly affect the children's explicit and implicit ageist attitude? Data was collected from 503 fourth to sixth grade elementary school children. Child-Age Implict Association Test is used to measure implicit ageist attitude. Multinominal logistic analysis and ordered logistic analysis was applied. Followings are the main results: First, explicit and implicit ageist attitudes are found to be related with different predictors. Second, Elderly contact seems to lighten children's ageist attitude overall. Third, the effects of grandparental contact and the neighboring elderly contact on two different ageism were different. While the effect of elderly neighbor contact is limited to the expression of ageism, grandparental contact has a influence not only on the explicit but also on the implicit ageism, even though the effect on implicit attitude is limited in extent. Forth, not the quality of contact but the quantity of it was related to implicit ageist attitude. This result contradicts conventional idea of Intergroup Contact Theory. In the further research, the predictor of implicit ageist attitude need to be throughly examined.

For the investigation, 373 fifth-grade elementary school students in Incheon were surveyed by a questionnaire, and the data were analized by the SPSS 10.0 program. The result showed that 85% of the surveyed schoolchildren showed the interest in the Korean traditional foods. It also revealed that female students are more interested in the traditional food than male students and the children of the career woman are more interested than those of the housewives. As for the motive of their interest, 39.7% of the subjects answered 'through mass media'. Male students and the children of the housewives got the interest through their mother, and female students and the children of the career woman got the interest through their hobby of cooking food. Among the traditional foods, 76.4% of the children designated kimchi as the most proud traditional food. As for the reasons of reducing traditional food use, 39.9% of students responded because of 'not-tasty' and 28.7% of students replied because of 'not enough time to cook'. But 62.2% of the subjects thought the traditional foods should be more used in the future. As for the succession and development of the traditional foods, 33.8% of the subjects said it should be carried out by the family. The basic knowledge score of the traditional foods was 5.78 on a scale of 10, which showed relatively low level. The lower their basic knowledge, the less their interest in the traditional foods was. The samgyetang, ogokbap and bindaetteok were the most perceived traditional foods. The cheonggukjang, nabakgimchi and jindallaehwajeon were the foods they had seen, but the they didnot have heard or seen the others. Among the traditional foods, susugyeongdan, jindallaehwajeon and dasik were more perceived by the schoolchildren in the rural area than those in the urban area. The jindallaehwajeon and dasik were more perceived by female students than by male students. Therefore, in order to make elementary schoolchildren take the traditional foods with pride by increasing their perception and knowledge of them, the family should give them many opportunities to eat traditional foods. The school also should try to establish a cooperative relationship to the family of schoolchilderen and use more Korean traditional foods in the school's meal program. Furthermore, the society's concern and support are necessary and also the role of mass media, which have great influence on children, is important.
