  • The main aim of this study is to find out whether an elementary school's science-invention program for gifted pupils has an effect on their attitude towards science-engineering sector or related careers for their future. For hypothesis testing, a class for gifted pupils of 6th grade in D elementary school, J elementary school is chosen. The experiment was implemented 12 times during the period. Major findings were as follows. In career maturity, there weren't statistically meaningful differences found between experimental and controlled group as a result of invention program. This result showed that the invention program is not appropriate to promote the career maturity. However, there were still some evidence of change in their attitudes to science-engineering. Based on the result, an invention program which fails to improve career maturity should be amended.

A questionnaire was used to investigate the consumption and attitude of the students when they having kimchi in the school meal service. The subjects consisted of 426 elementary school students(212 boys and 214 girls) in Seongnam. The collected data were analyzed by SAS package. The frequency of having kimchi was as follows. 52.1% of the students eat kimchi in every meal time, and 97.4% eat more than once a day. However, 54.0% of the students consume more than 5 pieces($2.5\times3.0 cm$) of kimchi per meal while 17.6% 1~2 pieces. They eat more kimchi at home than at school, and the main reason is that kimchi at home is 'more tasty'(79.1%), 'more safety'(29.1%) and 'less hot and salty'(19.2%). Baechu kimchi was found to be the most favorite one in the school meal service, followed by kkakdugi, yoelmu kimchi, chonggak kimchi, oi kimchi and nabak kimchi in order. Students wanted to added apples, pineapples, pears, oranges, shrimps, cucumbers and crab flavored fish paste to kimchi. Students' most favorite foods made with kimchi in the school meal service were Kimchi bokgumbab, Kimchi mandu, Kimchi jjigae, Kimchi jumukbab, Kimchi gimbab, Kimchi bokgum, Kimchi bibimbab, Kimchi hamburger and Kimchi dongas in order. • The purpose of this study was to provide research results on how teacher background variables and teacher efficacy affect the teacher's instructional behavior of elementary school teachers in student participatory classes. A survey was conducted on 122 elementary school teachers in the G area and a regression analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship of influence between variables. As a result of the regression analysis, self-regulation efficiency and task difficulty preference had a significant impact on elementary teachers' instructional behavior. As for teaching knowledge, class motivation, which are sub-variable factors in class behavior, self-regulating efficacy had a higher influence than task difficulty preference and for class communication, task difficulty preference had a higher influence than self-regulating efficacy. Based on the results of the study, we considered ways to show desirable teaching behavior of elementary school teachers in student participatory classes.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the perception of parents in order to develop a software education program for elementary students convergence with English. A survey was administered to 120 parents asking perceptions about SW education in schools and preferences about English-SW convergence programs for their elementary school children. The results shows that the parents think the current 17 hours of SW education provided at elementary schools is not enough and also they hoped the education started at an earlier grade than the current 5th·6th graders. Most parents perceived English is helpful in SW education and answered strongly for the need of English-SW convergence programs. A two-week program with the ratio of 6(SW):4(English) was the most preferred according to the study. As for regional differences, the parents in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province wanted SW education as after-school programs in elementary schools whereas, parents in Chungcheong Province expected SW education programs be provided from near-by universities. It is hoped that with the results of this study various English-SW education programs are developed and operated.

  • Because the educational significance of reading activities for growing children is so great, the importance of reading cannot be overemphasized. While the reading volume of elementary school students in Korea is very high, as they go up to middle school, the reading volume falls rapidly. This study examined a more effective way to resolve this middle school reduction in reading volume. Middle school freshmen were surveyed on their reading habits and preferences in the sixth grade of elementary school, after which the groups were divided into two groups based on their averages; groups with high/low reading habits and groups with high/low reading preferences). Participants also wrote reading reports for six weeks, kept a record of the days of the week they read for more than 20 minutes, and noted down the time they read in minutes. It was found that 75% of participants did not read one book a week when in the sixth grade of elementary school and it was confirmed that reading many books and liking to read were elements that had different dimensions. For example, about 35% of the participants said they liked books but rarely read them. It was also confirmed that the reading habits formed in elementary school were a strong variable that affected the number of days that and the reading time of middle school students rather than the reading preferences formed in elementary school. This study concluded that a subjective attitude toward reading and actually reading were completely different problems, which suggested that 'habits' could have a greater influence than 'preferences' when performing tasks to achieve goals.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting vegetable preferences of children based on the social cognitive theory to reduce imbalances in vegetable consumption. Methods: The survey investigated 177 elementary school students in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, in June of 2018. The subjects consisted of 44 fifth graders (27.7%) and 128 (72.3%) sixth graders. Results: Among personal factors of the Social Cognitive Theory, positive outcome expectation and self-efficacy of the vegetable preference group were significantly higher than those of the non-preference group. Negative barrier scores of the non-preference group were significantly higher than those of the preference group, and the biggest barrier was that vegetables were tasteless. Among behavioral factors, the nutritional knowledge of vegetables was high, but the degree of practice was low. Practice score of the vegetable preference group was significantly higher than that of the non-preference group. Among environmental factors, the vegetable preference group was more likely to accept advice from people around them than the non-preference group and the most influential people were doctors and parents. In the vegetable intake environment, children in the vegetable preference group had high accessibility to vegetables. Correlation analysis and regression analysis of the social cognitive factors and vegetable preferences revealed all factors except nutritional knowledge showed significant correlation with vegetable preference. And surrounding people (p < 0.01), practice (p < 0.01), and self-efficacy (p < 0.05) had positive effects on vegetable preference. Conclusion: These results suggest that providing the health benefits from eating vegetables and educating children for improving their self-confidence are necessary for increasing the preference for vegetables and their intake by children.

  • Although online education has many advantages such as providing huge information and overcoming time and space limit over the traditional education, its effects may not be good unless proper user interface is not provided. Only well-designed interface can allow students to learn correct information quickly and study creatively and actively. The purpose of this study is to design and implement user interface suitable for elementary school students. In this study, in order to design proper user interface for elementary school students, factors affecting human-computer interaction have been analyzed and adopted. Also, design and structure of existing educational portal sites are analyzed so that the most common design elements are adopted. Finally, extensive survey is carried out in order to examine preference and navigation style of elementary school students and teachers. The survey results are reflected on the design principles of this work.

This case study was conducted with seven students who showed typical types of interest in science. Students wrote a photo-journal for 12 weeks. They were interviewed every other week by a researcher. We analyzed two students who developed individual interest. It turns out that RF participated in doing experiments at home, and disassembling and assembling things. Participation of activities was a process of solving curiosity. When he was unable to solve problems, he searches the internet or books. Sometimes he would ask for help from his teacher. JW engaged in activities: drawing, doing experiments at home, and going to informal education center. She communicated with others by using online-offline media. Curious questions were solved by herself. The two students have a tendency to solve problems by themselves. Also, positive science-related activities were going on at home and in school. This study not only give insights and understanding of students who developed individual interest in science but also provide implication for educators to examine personal characteristics of students.
