  • This study aimed to find out the formation of ecologically educational place identity of nature trails in national parks, which elementary school students to adults can understand, by analyzing the connectivity between characteristics (signs) of nature trails and elementary science environment-related key concepts and the domain of ecological education in the course of environment and by developing a semiotic interpretation model of place identity based on Barthes's semiotic theory. When analyzing correlations between the interpretation board-focused surrounding environment of nature trails and the content system of ecological education, this study found out that it showed the highest connectivity with the domain of 'System of Ecological Environment'. When analyzing the formation of place identity of nature trails in terms of semiotics, this study discovered that geographical locations or landscapes, artificial environments and physical elements as characteristics of surrounding environments mostly acted on the formation of placeness. Besides, it was found that both knowledge and attachment elements equally could act on the formation of a sense of place. Being likely to develop through interaction between placeness and a sense of place, place identity was mostly composed of behavioral internal stages and sympathetic internal stages. To diversify the formation of place identity, however, this study found it necessary to develop environment education projects and create surrounding environments and interpretation boards with the environmental uniqueness of nature trails reflected much more.

  • Since 1992, the sixth national curriculum introduced the policy of school based curriculum development(SBCD) and required all the public elementary schools to develop their own curriculum for the gifted children in their schools. However, in spite of the fact that this curriculum policy for the gifted children has the history of 15 years until now, the current state of its implementation seems to be unsatisfactory. The major reason for that seems to be due to the reality that the schools have not had the theoretical basis for the curriculum development for the gifted children. In this vein, the researcher presented the theoretical SBCD model for the gifted children in elementary schools under the assumption that the model should suit the identity of elementary education, so that the gifted education in the elementary school can be implemented in its own form and adequacy. Based on the identity of elementary education, the model was developed by reformulating three component models of VanTassel-Baska's ICM: content model, process-product model, and epistemological model. The major feature of the researcher's model is to adapt and adjust the three component models differently according to the age level from the first to sixth graders in the elementary school. The model can be used not only as a general model for the talent pool of the school but also as an individual model for a specific gifted child by taking his special needs and characteristics into account. The model is a theoretical one based on the curriculum models for the gifted which were presented by several scholars in the area of G/T education, and it needs to be validated empirically in the future.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the professional identity of elementary school health teachers. Methods: In-depth interviews with fifteen elementary school health teachers were conducted from July 2010 to August 2012. Qualitative data collected by the researcher including transcription and field notes were analyzed through an adapted methodology based on the Grounded Theory of Strauss and Corbin. Results: Fifteen categories, 35 sub-categories and 120 concepts were obtained. The key category that was consistently maintained in identity formation was 'keeping themselves being a teacher providing nursing' which has three styles, 'focusing on health education', 'combining nursing and education' and 'focusing on providing nursing care'. Conclusion: Results of this study will provide basic information for preparing manuals regarding the range of activities in school health teachers' jobs, improving promotion and merit payment systems for school health teachers, creating support programs for them, and contributing to the formation and establishment of their professional identity.

  • The purpose of the study was to critically explore the academic identity of dance education as a paradigm of practice-based education. Dance education is recognized as a school dance since the first curriculum was designed, which was announced by the Ministry of Education in 1955. Although Korea's dance education has 65 years of history, its academic identity as a dance education is not very strong. Traditional dance education was teacher-centered, skills-oriented, and exercise-oriented by following the practice-based paradigm. Recently, an initiative was taken to establish a new paradigm for dance education in schools, communities, and professional fields. This study followed the keyword network analysis and reviewed the main contents of each section of dance education research from a time-series perspective. The first section (1968-1979) is a practice of dance education based on physical education; the second section (1980-1989) is a creative-based movement education for primary education; the third section (1990-1999) is a systematization of dance education courses by class; the fourth section (2000-2009) is a paradigm for cultural and artistic education; the fifth section (2010-2019) consisted of various educational practices and institutions. Based on the research results, efforts are requested to establish an academic identity that can support dance education, interdisciplinary practice, and research.

  • This study aimed to understand students' learning in elementary science classes in terms of participatory perspective. Participatory perspective is based on the participationist views on learning. Based on the participatory perspective, this study used two concepts of participationism: 'the changes of learning on commognition' of Sfard (2007) and 'the identity' of Wenger (1998/2007). Based on these concepts, four episodes of an elementary science class were analyzed. The results showed that students carried out their learning from objective-level learning to meta-level learning. And students defined who they are by identifying and negotiating scientific meaning during the learning. These results showed students become members of science community through their participations in science class.

  • This research examines mutual culture education in accordance with Germany's immigrant social integration policy by analyzing the National European School in Berlin. In this regard, the curricula of Joan-Miró elementary school and Finow elementary school are analyzed. Germany maintains a multicultural policy which enables immigrants to maintain their native language and identity and simultaneously integrate them into the German society. In short, maintenance of immigrants' mother tongue and immigrant students' acquisition of the German language is the core of Germany's social integration policy. The National European School in Berlin is a public school established for the sake of an educational environment in which students can not only build up language capacity, but also create a culturally mutual environment for multicultural students. The school's educational objective is mutual culture education which can integrate and maintain the cultural identity and language of multicultural students. Joan-Miró elementary school encourages mutual cultural ability and bilingual ability while preparing students for the future intelligent society, leading their independent life and self-initiated learning. Finow elementary school encourages mutual culture ability, language capacity and directional capability apart from the basic capacities that can reinforce students to become citizens in demand of the future intellectual society. Korean foreign language education needs to be practically diversified as in the case of the Germany's National European school. Also, improvement of educational environment such as students' bilingual ability, students' ability development regarding their individual characteristics, and the capability of mutual culture understanding are issues that should be urgently treated.
